Zoom G3: Stompbox And Amp Emulation Under A Single, Affordable Roof (Video)

  • Guitar multi-effects pedals put tons of variety and (more often than not, lately) amplifier simulations at your disposal without you having to lug the corresponding tons of physical gear around with you. Only problem is, the interfaces on most multi-effects aren't always the friendliest. In contrast, the Zoom G3 multi-effects pedal comes across like Fred Rogers.
    The Zoom G3 takes a unique approach to GUI with it's three-screen, icon-based menu systems and fused-stompbox physical layout. The smartly designed interface makes playing the pedal lots of fun. It doesn't hurt that the Zoom G3 includes a forty-second looper and sounds markedly better than previous Zoom multi-effects, too. Oh, and it costs $200.

    Gigged with the Zoom G3 this past weekend. I only used it for trem, phase, chorus, slapback, acoustic emulator, and a envelop Filter (no dirt or amp simulation effects). I loved the layout of the peddle and the quality of the sounds. Even my die hard "no effects" buddies think this thing makes sense and sounds great.

    I have got to say - this is one of the BEST demo videos I have seen... Right mix of info and great playing demonstrations. I am very curious about this pedal - even if it had a quite decent reverb (seems too) and a useable delay it would be worth it to augment my live setup. DSP is really getting up to speed these days. I always look for simplicity,flexibility, and musicality, and this seems to have all three!

    I got this mainly for the tuner and noise gate, but I've tested other effects on it with more satisfaction. The gain/overdrives/distortions it has do some decent crunch or even metal sounds, but I still prefer to use my amps distortion (tech 21 tm60). The reverbs, choruses, and delays I really like. NOTE: The way your order your pedals within the patches can greatly effect your sound. If you want to use something like this you must have the willingness to learn to get the most out of it.

    One thing that I love about the Zoom G-series pedals is being able to connect an external pedal to control the drums (on-off). Lets you shut off the drums with your foot when the song ends. Would like to see 2 Control-in jacks so we could use one for the drums and the other for the controller values (wah).

    actually you can get all of that . there are some "pedals" that combine two effects eg. chorus/reverb, chorus/flanger etc. the amp simulators all have choice of cabinets. but you can always use the g3 in a chain with other foot pedals for more combos of effects.

    ANSWER TO 95% of questions here: Yes. Seriously the Zoom has nearly anything you could want. I got it used last year $120 and in my 8 years of playing guitar it's hands down been the most useful/fun piece of equipment I've used (minus the guitar of course). It's so customizable yet so easy to use. I wasn't a digital fan prior to using this, but now that I've had it I can't go back to analog.

    I am amazed at the things that these stomp boxes can do. When I used to play back in the mid 60's to the early 70's we were limited to a fuzz box, wah wah, maybe a treble booster, a phase shift, and voice tube. Being the proud owner of a Silvertone amplifier from Sears which had a negative tone and needed all the help it could get. Anyone remember the Fuzz Face?

  • @hydroturd
    @hydroturd Před 11 lety

    amp simulation is decent in my opinion- it's not just EQs changing-it's the shape of the sound. Like I can make my guitar with humbuckers actually sound somewhat like single coils, it's really interesting, but bear in mind that the speaker used can also make a difference. You can have up to 6 different effects (because of a free update) at once, but if you use something weird like 2 amps , then there are limitations to how many effects can be chained.

    This unit would be perfect for me if it had a MIDI out that would sent patch # changes to my PSA 2.0. Right now I use an MS-50G at the end of my board to handle noise gate, reverb and modulations, but I can only realistically use 3 different patches with the single-pedal switching on the MS-50G

    The firmware update to this allows now up to 6 pedals/plug ins. Be careful when getting an external expression pedal though as the internal calibration doesn`t work for it ( which is daft ! ) so many expression pedals will be useless, I expect the official Zoom one works though.

    I have a pod hd500 and have owned a zoom g2nu and I like the zoom sound wise at high volumes. You can adjust the pods effects more and do more with the pod. But zooms interface is easier and its true bypass. The pod hd500 muffles your tone and cuts your volume slightly.
