I am repairing my 2006 Saturn Vue which only has 150K miles. I intend to drive this for many years after I get it back on the road. I have done a few things different. For one, I am using a 5/8-11 UNC grade 8 bolt with a self locking nut. I want the nut to be accessible in case I should ever need to drop the cradle. The nylon insert in the nut will not stand up to the temperature of welding it in place plus these should only be used once ( I design stuff for the Navy). I incorporated an access hole for the nut. the access hole will have a cover plate with gaskets and retaining screws to prevent entry of water.
Thank you for the video. I've spray the area with a hot wax/oil mix. If that doesn't work to stop the rust, it's good to know I can use this backup repair.
I wish these were made as a replacement set like the various frame repairs for Jeep’s are. Same with the trailing arm mounts that rust through. My 2007 has rust in both subframe boxes and my 2005 has rusted through its trailing arm mounts.
Best video I've seen yet for this repair. Been putting it off for some time now but you make it looks so easy that I think I'll get on it in the spring. Thanks.
Excellent!!

I have a 2006 Saturn Vue with the engine cradle body mount rust issue that you have in this video. If I was to bring you my Saturn Vue could you repair it? If so what would be the approximate cost of the repair on both front mounts?
@@ronaldreed4347 Sure! We've got Saturns here from Syracuse, Maine and North Carolina... Since they all rust slightly differently, the repair cost depends on the amount of damage that needs to be repaired. We'd have to get a good look at it to make an accurate determination on what it would cost to fix it.
@@pistonring8 I'm coming to your shop as soon as I get some time. I live 3 hours away and the driver side is already separated. 😭😭😭
@@edwarddavis596 That's not too bad... I've had them come here from Syracuse and Buffalo. I'm working on one from North Carolina right now.
I’m about to do this repair on my Vue I’m not scrapping this suv it runs so well even with 200k
A great feeling when we can give any equipment additional life. Nice repair. Was it a Harbor Freight flux core welder that you used?
Stay safe, Joe Z
We're using an Eastwood 175 gas mig that's been with us almost 8 years!! And still going strong.
@@pistonring8 Thank you. I was wondering if the HF unit would do the job. I have a Lincoln 225 stick as well but I would be doing this outside & I have better reach with the HF.
@@pistonring8I have a Saturn vue and the frame underneath is rust will you be able to fix it for me?
@@crystalsmith2312 Sure!! 🧑🏭
Luckily our 04 Vue leaks a tad amount of oil so the front suspension is fine, but the rear suspension is ate up with rust.
I love it when they preserve their own chassis!! Hopefully the back half holds out a little longer for ya!!
@@pistonring8 I just crawled under it today to check out that rear trailing arm mount, it'll need some fabrication work to be usable long term. The Vue is currently up for sale in Michigan.
I plan to try this repair soon. Do you use a certain strength grade or type of bolt for the replacement sub-frame mounting bolts? Is there anything special about the nut you use? Many thanks for the helpful video. You inspired me to keep my 2006 on the road longer... only has 136k miles on it.
Our local hardware store sells grade 8 bolts by the pound... We usually have at least a dozen or so laying around to use as pickup truck bed bolts on restorations. So that's what we normally use. If you're a novice welder, flange nuts will give you more surface to weld to, with less risk of warping the threads. Hope this helps!!
How much $$$ did this repair cost you? My '05 is fine in every other area. Hate to junk it!
do you have all the measurements for the peices you used?
No. They all rust slightly different. Some pieces will be larger on severely rusted versions. Smaller on less rusted vehicles. We only cut out the rusted areas.
What size bolts do you use?
If I remember correctly, they're 1/2" x 13 thread. Two and 3/4" long, grade eights.
I have a 2006 Saturn Vue v6 with this problem on both sides what is the cost to repair? One side is much worse than the other.
$250-$2500 depending on the amount of work. The rust damage on these varies greatly and is specifically unique to each vehicle.
@@pistonring8 what is the normal time for repair
@@josephlansing8371 Light damage could be a 10 hour - 2 day repair. Heavier damage requiring further disassembly could take a week or more. Reconstructing parts of the subframe and engine cradle could take longer.
Be nice if someone sold this as a kit!
That's exactly what we've been thinking... Like the sections of Jeep Wrangler frame you can buy from a dozen different manufacturers!!
@@pistonring8 I also think they should make inside rocker box replacement/reinforcement pieces (that I need). I wish you weren't 6.5 hours from where I live, too.
@@charlesheinle9908 i live in Illinois but dang if I could make it to PA, I would. Just bought mine last year and just disvered this issue a few months ago. Have only 110k miles on my 2006.
Where can we find you? I'd like to bring my ride In for some work.

@@pistonring8 What do you chargefor this exact repair on both sides?
@@SnowHoarder Exactly $1650
@@pistonring8 Well that is reasonable. Except thatI'm in California, doh. Any recommendations in Cali?
@@SnowHoarder There's plenty of cheap, rust free cars n trucks throughout the southwest... Y'all are super lucky!!
what state are you located in ?
Seriously?
@@pistonring8..well nevermind 😕. Yes I found your location afterwards but your response is shit. Good luck to ya. Yank.
Can I pay you to make me 2 body mounts for 2006 satern vue just like ones in vidio
Sure, but I would need the vehicle to be here since they're all rusted differently.
