He told me that the first time he went to USA for a fair (ig it was in the 90s) he barely knew a word in english, and he met this old couple who recognized him and started to treat him like a celebrity, asking for pictures with him etc. When he tried to tell them he didn't speak english, they started to apologize: according to them, they were in the wrong because they couldn't speak italian, "the language of the famous master engraver"

I've realised the US will never move forward, it will always be a never-ending circle of racism, history forever tied to its people. Even black people over there seem to perpetuate racial stereotypes on themselves on how a melanin-rich person should act/live/talk. You deviate even slightly? You aren't black enough.
I lost all interest of visiting when a young man from my country went there for a PhD and was murdered on the streets at night by a gang member. Some comments from certain black american citizens were foul and nasty because he was 'white and european'. But I realize trying to reason with them about the fact not all european countries colonized countries or had slaves is a loss of time. Bosnian muslims know what a genocide is. Polish know what war and being considered subhuman is like. Irish know what slavery feels like. Greeks know what being conquered and having a millennial history and culture is like.

Some airport employee recognized the desperate look, made a smoking gesture while asking us in English if we needed to smoke. Not far from us was an open door that lead to the outside, a staircase down to a sidewalk with a very used ashtray. We soon realized that we were literally outside of the airport on a side street to/from the parking lot. The door to the inside still wide open. It was way later when a CZcamsr mentioned how she wanted to fly back home with her children for Christmas because if they would fly in June at the summer break it would be winter there. My brain just started to make clicking noises and a loud 'ohhhhh....' came out of my mouth.

@abigmonkeyforme um you know "summer olympics" relates to the sports played, NOT the season it's played in right? lol September's not summer in Australia! Can't wait to hear your students responses to that after 2032 when the Australian Brisbane SUMMER Olympics are held Fri, Jul 23, 2032 - Sun, Aug 8, 2032 🤣
Maybe switch to something like the tennis, which is a summer sport & talk about when that is held, or maybe discuss the football, or even that US & Australian fire fighting planes are shared between California & Sydney. Ask them how they think that works! (mind you, it doesn't work that great anymore, due to climate change increasingly overlapping the bushfire seasons). Bushfires on Christmas in Australia too, or if they are confused by Christmas, then NYE fireworks being cancelled, due to bushfire risks being too high & too many out of control bushfires on NYE in Australia

@abigmonkeyforme You remind me of the people on the Jimmy Kimmel show, asked to name a country on a world map & unable to do so cause their geography skills are so appalling!
Mexico, Tokyo, Munich & South K. are all in the northern hemisphere & have all hosted Olympics outside the months you listed in the last 100 years (that's 1/5th of all Olympics outside the months you listed). In fact South K has hosted a winter Olympics in the months you listed for them, but a Summer Olympics on the same dates as Sydney did!
& of course there's not going to be skiing in the summer Olympics when it's already in the winter ones! If any sports will cross over, it will be ice sports entering the Commonwealth games, since there is no Commonwealth Games winter event. Paralympic type events have already been added to the general Commonwealth games schedule, would actually be good to add some ice hockey etc to them as well, so as to even up the medal tally & give Canada a chance to genuinely compete with Australia.
Anyway, yeh, maybe focus on learning geography rather than trying to teach your students anything new

There is a 5 mile long stretch of road nearby that with a grocery store at either end and a little market near the middle. 8, 10 and 12 % sales tax. Because one end was county that shot off in the other direction, the middle was a little piece of municipal that butted up against the other two and the end part was the start of the downtown metro area. The US is a bit wonky like that, but that's what you get when you effectively have a federation of 50 normal sized countries masquerading as one big one, where you can have four sets of laws, rules or regulations all pertaining to one place because you happen to live in an HOA with it's own regulations, in a city with own regulations, in a state with it's own laws in a country with it's own laws. Scarcity in this country has only ever been eliminated by overcoming the incentives that drive people to produce scarcity for profit.

@@SewardWriter Ehh, you might want to look into that. Having a 'mental illness' isn't an automatic disqualifier. It's mostly it is if you've ever been legally held by the government against your will for a mental health hold. There's even a few cases working it's way through the courts that is going to challenge that.
Sure, I agree that America is just weird in general. But the US gun law itself is a complete mess. It's shot through with contradictory statutes and out of date legal standards that are held together with the judicial version of bailing wire and duct tape.
And that's why the Bruen Decision has a lot broader implications than just NY's carry laws. The state courts are no longer going to just be allowed to hold the 2A to a lower of legal scrutiny than it has been for the past few decades.

5:00 Not true. As an American, I can confirm that even while walking on a crosswalk when it's your turn to cross the street, it is still unsafe. Most if not all of the drivers here are reckless. It is not uncommon to see someone run a red light and almost hit or sometimes hit a pedestrian, of course they don't get charged or jailed most of the time. Even when I went to see family on the other side of the country, there were still really bad drivers everywhere. Ironically, if you know where and at what time, it is possible to safely J-walk which just flips this reality we live in. Sometimes J-walking is safe but crosswalks are not... golly our society.

Nah, as someone born in the US I can say that's a Just Your Region thing. Where I grew up people actually stop at red lights. I walked constantly and never had a single close encounter in 20 years.
And as someone who is a British Citizen I can say Britain's roads are SO much worse, people will walk out in front of your car knowing and seeing you coming, forcing you to stop. They will also walk out in front of you AT A CROSS WALK when you have the green light and theirs just turned red, and keep walking until your light turns red again. It's a effing scourge. Meanwhile when *I* try to jwalk I nearly get run down. It's a no-win situation no matter what your transport is.

Due to the way these laws were implemented, it leads to the issue of places of business being far removed from peoples’ homes in most places,

Canadian here. I toured the US with my dad in his camper. After driving much of the day I liked to go for walks when we stopped for the night. The WTF moments were when I discovered that in many places you couldn’t walk because the busy roads/highways didn’t have room for pedestrians. I wanted to visit a mall I’d seen on the way in. I couldn’t figure out how to get there so I asked the clerk at a nearby hotel. He kept giving me driving directions. I had to repeat several times I was walking before he finally said I don’t think you can walk there.
Other WTF moments were going to ocean beaches to look for birds/marine critters and seeing big trucks just driving down the beach like it was a road without lines and using it as a giant parking lot.
Further south people were lying on towels while trucks travelled up and down and were parked randomly on the beach. I figured sunbathers must get run over regularly. My dad quipped if a pedestrian gets run over then the police probably issue them a ticket for obstructing the right of way of a truck (which seem to have more rights than people).
In Canada, beaches are for people and wildlife, not vehicles so it was quite a culture shock for me trying to get away from all the traffic to find the traffic had invaded what I thought were protected places.
Oh, another WTF was cows roaming through parks that purported to be refuges for endangered birds. The ground vegetation was essentially eaten, trampled, gone so the endangered birds that nest in ground and shrub cover were SOL (no wonder they’re endangered). You’d get fined or even jailed if you so much as plucked a leaf, but cows were allowed to reduce the land to a barren landscape. Just so different from our parks.
