New BTG Drinking game, every time Tony says 'in general' or mis-pronounces 'Specific/ pacific' do a shot. Great pre-drinking game! (Love the show guys keep it up)
Pre-drinking?! You'd die 🤣
Or “100%”
Or Manafactra instead of manufacture
Alcohol poisoning incoming 🏃
Or says 'brang' instead of brought
Or 'pickety' instead of persnickety
The intro was epic 🤣😂😂
Sam -“Did you watch the BAFTAs last night?”
Tony-“No!”
As a “car girl” thank you for the start of the podcast!
Same! No one else in my family knows much about cars and my friends aren’t really interested either, as a girl people are often surprised when I say I like cars and f1 and don’t think I even know what a golf is
The true 1%
We should go with Car Enthusiast
The Gullwing doors on the Mercedes SLS have specially engineered explosive door hinges that blow off as it rolls over. You can crawl right out easier than a car without gullwing doors. So you could say it is safer!
Man maths to follow… 😂
I am looking at the Mercedes S Class Coupe for around 35-40 grand now. What a car. Amazing tech, really comfortable, the 500 has a 4.7L V8. The ultimate GT and it looks PHENOMENAL! Its a future classic that S Coupe.
The CL63 to this day is a lot of car for the money.
Talking about money pits. Granted it's a very cool GT car, but like Tony said a 100.000 car comes with 100 grand car bills.
@@pasquale78 Of course but its only a 7 year old car at the oldest and has very good reliability. Especially that generation of Mercedes V8s. Just the normal servicing takes it very far.
@@bigmini2870 Fair enough, but I wouldn't touch it with five foot pole. (but don't take advice from a man who drives a 2020 Corolla ;-) )
Agreed, top notch mercedes sculpture, a true representation of the sensual purity design language. And what a comfortable boat.
As one of the two car girls 🤣 subscribed and a Patreon of your channel, I appreciate the honest discussion! Great topics, I learn something every time. That’s what makes you a car person, petrolhead, gearhead whatever you want to call it, is a willingness to learn about the industry and products.
You’re not a real car guy if you don’t watch Behind the Glass 🤣🤣
Phew I’ve made it through the week, it’s how I measure my week by this podcast dropping 😊
33:30 the previous gen was called the 340i, if you want to search for the new shape you have to search for m340i, and they're from £38k with 20k miles on autotrader at the moment
I think the guy who said Not a real car guy if you lean on cars, He probably means Have some class and dont lean on other peoples cars, imagine if you found someone leaning on your ferrari.
Autotrader screenshots of the cars being discussed would’ve been really good
Lord Tony Gravelwood, the wealthiest man you will never meet!
Usually a bubble when people start saying ‘this is the new normal’ etc. As soon as production is ramped back up, manufacturers will be producing as many cars as they possibly can.
Did you watch the BAFTAs last night?
Naoowww
I’ve just made my e46 M3 convertible into my daily and sold the daily thrasher. Still got the family SUV. Running costs will be less than monthly payments, he says. Shout out Munich Legends who maintains it
The perfection of imperfection - Watch it! Love it
I can’t believe a BMW i8 is £35,000. The cheapest in Australia right now is $180,000 AUD. Great episode guys!
God bless the right hand drive market
Funny you should mention the Alpina, Saw a beautiful D3 touring in a glorious met Green with gold bits and those multispoke thin spoked wheels in Swansea this week exactly the same as your picture colour wise. Stunning bit of kit.
Love the episode as always. It would be great if you could do something similar but based on a monthly budget rather than purchase price. It’s hard to compare a Golf R and R8 for example, when the older cars are much harder to finance.
Best performance cars under £500pm with a 10% deposit?
Always about finance nowadays. The only reason cars hold any value used these days is due to finance.
Best time of the week!!
I love the voices CZcamsrs give to their viewers
Enjoy these Thursday pods
My fav intro yet
One of the main reasons for the aquisition of Alpina by BMW is supposedly to "ensure the long-term continuation of this traditional brand in a future-oriented manner" (Pieter Nota, Board BMW).
had a mk7 R golf R from new in 2016, just sold it as the prices are too good. have a Model y Performance on order. Love the car for 6 years. absolute blast and best bang for you buck Hatch out there.
15:31 hello, what a beauty! Alpina seems to be a classier version of M cars
Lol, when I was watching the Rolls video I thought if that was mine you was delivering and sitting on I would’ve gone nuts.
Please never stop these blooper/pre-action intros lol
You can
You can’t
You can
You can’t
That segment sums up your friendship 😂
Excellent topics! Very interesting
If your gonna look at the Jaguar F - Type why not the V6? its one of the best sounding V6 in recent times, seems to be always overlooked imo its the sweet spot for the previous gen such a shame they don't make it anymore.
And the V6S is properly quick
The SLS doors have explosive bolts if you flip it
One of my mates has a Cayman R. Not sure about the price but probably in the £35k area.
Fun option, basically no devaluation and ok running costs
Yo Sam and Tony! hi from Granby, Colorado!
Great podcast guys
Awsome finly got finsh this podcast . Lot good cars in that 35k range .
This is the Everyman bracket! 😃
The best bracket
when Tony goes "Oh no..."
Very good as always guys....market here down under is similarly NUTS! I purchased a 718 GTS 4.0 during Covid and even enjoyed a nice discount on purchase. I was recently told by the dealership that I would be now waiting at least 12 months and it would be full list and probably "a bit on top"......OUCH!
Yeah but this stretches always down the enthusiast market with waiting list at or over year for golf gti/s3, i30n, gr yaris, 911s for carbon fibre brakes pad and brake line plus the usa car being burnt to a crisp.
I was originally looking for a new car but too many car no longer offer the option. Either the base trim level is no longor whatsoever or can't select a few options on the base level. You also can't spec out top spec on other cars.
I know some that was rear ended with light damage and it took 4 months to the fucking paint for a standard red hyundai.
You never mention Z4 e89, or SLK/SLC of the same generation. Great little cars to drive and feel special 🤩
agree about the prices of porsches now
ive managed to snag a 991.2 GTS with some nice spec for 92k, pretty certain about a year-year and a half ago they were mid 80's
Tony knows the price of cars shocker😂😂
Hello again, please remember, the 650ft Felicity Ace which could carry 4000 vehicles is 2 miles down on the sea bed off the Azores, it had 1,100 Porsches, 189 Bentleys plus many, many other VW group cars on board. Now with new Porsche cars not being produced the second-hand market prices will increase. Regards, RichardA.
48:17 Tony: Your shape downstairs
23:30 I always knew the SLS was going to be big money one day, I told someone to buy one back when they were 100k he's regretting it.
What about a used M2 or M240i? These still seem pretty good value used and there's a good variety for sale. While you can't get the brand new M240i xDrive in budget, you can get all the M Sport variants for between 35 and 40K brand new.
And although the new M240i xDrive is out of budget, I think it's worth pointing out that price-wise it's a direct competitor for a new Golf R. It's faster, and IMO meets the brief of looking more premium and more sporty. It's also got a really nice 6cyl engine vs the Golf R's 4cyl. I think it's one to watch out for in the used market in the not too distant future.
For Vancouver you should head up to Whistler!
Oh wow! The end of the video ends with Tony looking a bit scary! 😀😃
GR Yaris great shout Tony
Like the BAFTAs question at the beginning. That should be a regular feature.
Sam - what about the price of foie gras ?
Tony - F off
First and foremost, I don’t agree with the statement the person made, however, what I think they are hitting on is this pervasive culture of using cars as a status symbol. It’s the foundation of ‘built, not bought’ and it’s the reason you can rent private jets by the hour sitting on a runway to take Instagram photos in, or why 50% of Instagram appears to be photos of a watch with a Mercedes steering wheel in the background.
When I see someone putting their shoe on the paintwork of a $350,000 car (and YES - you can absolutely scratch the paint with your shoe; you can actually scratch the paint with improper washing technique), I think that person either has ‘F- you’ money or is more concerned about using the car as a prop, both in their photo as well as to inflate their ego, than they are the car itself. It’s that prioritization I think the commenter was basing their criticism, even if there aren’t ‘rules’ to being a car person.
*edited for flow/ease of reading and grammar
Modifying cars are still a massive thing over here in the U.K. The biggest difference is that in the U.K modified car scene we like looks and performance/speed and in America, it's mainly about how the car looks.
997.2 is going up in value so if you have to spend 5 or 6k on suspension etc it’s still gravy.
A nearly new fiesta st might not cost you maintenance but it will plummet on the depreciation.
Tony has a really refreshing view on cars. I like that.
him saying golf R hurt my head as the mark 8 is now way near that, but then i remember that I buy a 7.5 and not 8 due to infotainment
pmsl
Maserati Ghibli S. We have one and it's awesome.
M2 (OG or comp)
F fype V8
981 Cayman
All day!
I'd love a manual v8 r8 but there not exactly common in my part of the world
i30n face-lift would be my pick 👍
He’s right about having your foot on the car. Would be livid if anyone did that on my car. You’re right about the rest of it though.
My Porsche salesman for just a Carrera s in LA area starts at 125k without options and they have 15 to 25k of markups plus an unknown delivery date. It's insanity.
have not watched yet but hopefully i30n DCT/ facelift features
For £35k for me its impossible to look past the 5.5BT CLS63s. 585BHP as standard, turbo and stage 2 mod sees it reliably at 800bhp, its all the car you could ever need and relatively understated. You pretty much have a Brabus Rocket for less than 40k, i dont think you can go faster for less and looked after theyre very reliable. in my experience the odd sensor here and there but nothing out the ordinary. my perfect car.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. This podcast is perfect to make stool to
Gr Yaris is a great shout for 35k but I didn't want to wait 12 months because I was stuck in an aygo 🤷🏼♂️ so I went for an m240i, but for 35 grand and a family I'd look at a Kia stinger or Hyundai i30n
Porsche's Zuffenhausen factory (911, Cayman, Boxster) is still operational (at least last I had heard). It's the Leipzig factory (Macan, Cayenne, Panamera) which has halted
Why did they mention Cayman or Bosxter 981? Those are bang on 30-35k!
Out of respect I don't lean on other people's cars. But I do occasionally lean on my cars, with care as to not scratch the paint of course.
Old M3/M4 or s55 M2 would also be in budget Sam? Surely Tony can’t disagree with those?
Cars like Golf R etc are the most difficult to design. As Tony says they have to meet so many different drivers n terms of age, ability etc. carry up to 5 people and luggage etc. Take the family dog out. A wide weight range from 1 up to full, and weight distribution. They have to be able to do more! super car by comparison is easy! 2 seats. Some luggage space. Probably a more defined driver. More focused on driving and typically a higher price.
I have made critical comments. None of them had anything to do with your "car guy-ness." You guys do a great job.
I think Tony’s recommendations were better for those who have only 1 car etc
Sam’s list I would go for if I could afford to run 2 cars etc
Used for sure. Lexus GSF / FK8 Type R / Kia Stinger GTS / Giulia Quadrifoglio
As always some really interesting comments and insights, however I would argue that people don't buy Alpina cars because that want a 'customised' BMW, Alpina are better known for building fast road cars! On the other hand, BMW M cars are great track cars. I would choose an Alpina over an M car for road use all day. Just my perspective (#notacarguy!)
Talking about used cars I would be interested to know what Tony thinks of the now 11 year old 987 Porsche Boxster which still command used prices of up to and over £20,000. Is it still a sensible buy?
Rather get a mk3 TT Quattro at that price, but a Porsche is a Porsche.
Never feed the trolls. So many miserable people out there. Dont let them drag u down to their level.
Maserati GranTurismo would be a good shout
Nip down south of Vancouver BC to Seattle Washington
The bit about the r8 is where I think it’s an internet myth vs reality. All the better for folks who actually research. I have an r8 v10 for 8 years and I have other ferraris lambos and porsches so I am def not biased when I am calling out those myths from Tony. In fact the r8 is my cheapest car in the garage. The clutch will cost 6-7k like a gallardo yes, but it last “forever”. I have friends who daily drive them that gets over 125k miles on original clutch. Mine has 37k and 60% left and I drive a lot and is not afraid to backup the car in rtronic. The mag rides can be rebuilt for 1/4 the price now and there are a lot of aftermarket suspension options. The brake pads are the same from a rs4 ($40) and the rotors are the same price as a boxster ($500 a pair). And for years, r8 extended warranties cost the same as any regular Audi, until 2020 when they spiked the price 200-300% when they realized the repair data as claims started to come in. I agree without a warranty, the r8 is very expensive to own, but it will prob not leave u stranded as most of the problems are not catastrophic unlike bmw etc. It’s the car with the cheapest ownership cost of all, cheap to insure, many mechanics know how to to work on them and affordable extended warranties sometimes over 10 years make it very cost effective to own
If Tonys special car isn’t a Pista I’ll be surprised
Hyundai I30n a good shout
Here in Serbia there is factory's that make wirings for porche, bmw etc.
They source some stuff from Ukraine and they cant build that wiring looms. So they doesnt work at all for the moment.
Three words for Tony, Supply and Demand 😂
Every time I hear Tony talking about how cars are more expensive now than 10-20 years ago, I am screaming at my screen "Inflation!"
Question for Max Chilton: what was it like having Jules Bianchi as a team mate?
Why haven't you tested a Fiesta ST. You guys have talked about it numerous times but you haven't tested it. Just test one once Tony has one in stock
I own one myself so I want to know your opinion
I think the need fiesta St, and a mk gti. I also don't think sam has driven a dct i30n
Score boring or bore scoring?
"Score boring" lol. It's not that common Tony plenty of 997 gen 1 manuals on the road including mine 15k less than gen 2
If you put your foot on any of my cars like you did that white Rolls - I would punch your lights out !!!!
Kia stinger GTS surely is in there, rare, fully loaded, V6, fast, big and long warranty even if bought 2nd hand
Just bought a 2015 Panamera GTS for 35k, was a 108k car new, ticks all boxes.
M5 touring v10 would the ultimate car for that money there is a lovely dark blue one on auto trader with tan interior
Massively dated interior, unreliable engine, heavy.
What Sam just said about the Golf R...Say that in South Africa and you're immediately cancelled 😂🤞🇿🇦
Low mileage n55 BMW M2 in manual. Got one recently under £35k
Sound expensive.
@@philiphawkins4684 £31k to be precise from Harry Fairbairn BMW
Tony has a good choice of footwear today.
As someone that is in this looking in this market, why not an M6 grand coupe? So much car for the price..
I mean for 180 Grand you could get a GT3 RS or a 430 scuderia, to be it's a no brainer
If it’s your car you can piss on it if you want. If it’s other people’s property respect it and don’t put your dirty sneakers on the paint 😜
I think Tony misunderstood the discussion… his suggestions of 2-3yr old cars would be the alternatives to the boring new cars
Dealerships are the best place to go if you don't know much about cars because most of them don't either, especially main dealers....lol
Alpina purchase will allow BMW to go two routes as you move up the rungs, luxury with Alpina, or sport with M
Definitely think you guys would benefit from having some more specific rules when doing these comparisons. Really enjoy the debate but kind of didn't really go anywhere and the conclusion was pretty obvious by the end.
Maybe set a budget again and it's sam on the used market Tony with brand new/nearly new like no older than 2 years. But then you do like SUVs, hot hatches, sports coupe etc. The cars you compared today are totally not in the same league the person looking at brand new 330i is never going to get an r8. Loving the podcast as always and think you could do a whole thing of new Vs used just need some tighter rules when picking cars.
Pointless debates in general as Tony says everything that isn't brand new and £100k+ is shit. He said the 488 was great when it was new, now it's not the latest and greatest it's shit because it's a bit "slow". The man should stick to selling cars as he's really not a petrolhead and is so frustrating to listen to. Anyone that says the SLS is a dog to drive clearly just a muppet
