All fish owners need to know that once you have more than two fish pooping in a tank you should have a tank test kit. I did and successfully grew red oscars to full size with an plecko shark and an small loach. Even though two ate the algae you still need to test ammonia, pH, nitrates, and nitrites levels daily. You also have to add chemicals to keep your tank clean and healthy for the lifespan of your fish. Water changing is crucial also. Good luck. I had my tank for 5 years and no hiccups.

Dougie's owners obviously care very much for him, they just seemed to need a lot of instruction and education on how to keep and care for a goldfish - he needed a much bigger tank and goldfish can't have tank mates. The vets cheering as Dougie floats with his packing peanut is why I love humanity. The fact that so several people came together to save Dougie when the easier solution was to put him down. How carefully they operated to tie him to his life jacket. Everyone gave it 110% for a goldfish. Then they cheered, genuinely so happy for Dougie. the training isn't as dissimilar as you think, they are both learned helplessness. The dog didn't overcome his fear or become comfortable with skateboards. (note the dog staying as far as possible from the walking skate board and trying to leave the area of the skate park) The sound thing can be a useful tool but the dog needs to be exposed to the sound at a level that doesn't stress them out (under threshold) and then it can be counter conditioned with positive reinforcers (food, toys, etc.). A similar think could be done with the empty skateboard by allowing the dog to approach at his own speed, reinforcing small steps towards the board (looking at it, smelling it, stepping towards it). Teaching the dog to interact with the skateboard as a trick could also build his confidence

@@erjatikka3029 in the video they exposed the dog to the sound at a level (volume/ proximity) that was aversive to the dog (body language showed obvious stress signals). The dog's actions had no effect on the sound and through repeated exposure the dog stopped expressing these stress signals. But if you watch the dog's body language around skateboards after he was "treated" he shows a lot of avoidance behaviors, which suggests that he is still uncomfortable. The method I described aims to give the dog a new, positive association with skateboards. By giving the dog the choice to interact with the skateboard/ sound and rewarding for calm/positive interactions the dog becomes more confident around the thing that he was scared of. This way when the dog encounters skateboards he is not afraid of them and can behave calmly. Besides the argument of animal welfare and use of behavioral suppression, a dog that is uncomfortable but has learned not to show it is more likely to react "out of nowhere" if surprised by the thing that scares them or cornered by it.
      Hope this made sense

sad about the goldfish, they can live until 20 or 30 years. so no 2-3years is not a good run :/ Obviously he didn't die, it was just the sentiment i had an issue with. The tank is wayyyyy too small too. I don't really blame the owner though, he is clearly well loved - but the misinformation about goldfish are just so so prevalent. I even did the same mistake of a too small tank in the start, and not a strong enough filter for them. But I just did as I was told, by people I thought knew better than me. Goldfish are NOT beginner friendly or easy fish. they are messy, and need a lot of time, space and care.

I hope a tank upgrade was brought up alongside the testing kit for the water, especially after a vet trip for a fish (not that fish don't deserve vet treatment, just very hard to even find a vet that will see them and not immediately suggest euthanasia over very easy fixes.)

I know it's (unfortunately) common and that education about fishkeeping - especially goldfish - is not anywhere near where it needs to be to give these animals the best lives, but every time I hear someone say a timeframe of something like 2 1/2 years is "doing well" by a goldfish when they can easily live to 10-15 years or longer with proper care (large tank, good water filtration and food quality) I can't help but cringe a little. I'm glad to see most people are beyond keeping them in unfiltered bowls these days at least.
I think it needs to be better practice to not shame people for honest mistakes in pet keeping, but also make it a NORMAL and encouraged thing to seek out as much info about an animal as you can BEFORE bringing it into your life, even if it's something "simple." Otis had me going because I’m a T1D and I find I tire easily now. I’m so happy the surgery was a success and hopefully soon he won’t need insulin. I love that Otis’s memory of his owner wasn’t gone and loved seeing his owner getting loved up by Otis. It was all so touching!!
Dr. Kate was so totally awesome with the gold fish. Who would think a goldfish needed a floaty? I’m happy it worked out because fish are disposed of the first sign of health problems, so anyway that the fish can be saved is a plus.
Skateboard puppy was cute but dangerous. My Sasha was like that with skateboarders, bicyclists and anyone with a basketball. She grew out of it but there were some close calls. Chris did a great technique to solve this pup’s problem with skateboards. Genius!!

I felt the same way about Otis! I actually had a kitty with diabetes. He lived to be 21 years old. We learned to check his sugar and give him insulin and glucose when necessary. We’re pretty sure he actually went into remission after about six years, but we kept checking his sugar just in case❤️ He lived a great life and I hope the same is true of Otis
Also my brother had cancer that was localized around his pituitary. It’s surprising that he didn’t develop diabetes because he did develop pan-hypo-pituitarism so almost all of his pituitary function has to be supplemented with medication. He has to take artificial vasopressin, testosterone, growth hormone, and thyroxine. Glad Otis doesn’t need that! It’d be a whole lot of shots and pills.

We once waited a bit too long to help my dog because we had NO clue something was wrong and I STILL feel horrible about it! It was years ago and he’s very happy and healthy now! He had a really deep ear infection around the bend of the ear and was showing no signs on the outside of his ear and you couldn’t see it looking in. It wasn’t red, no discharge, no head shaking, no usual symptoms. The problem was his brother my other dog, licked his ears to try and help him and was removing the signs that would have told us something was wrong. We stop him when we know but he would do it at night when we couldn’t stop him. One day he wouldn’t let us touch it at ALL and started whimpering and crying so we took him to the vet IMMEDIATELY and he had a BAD infection. They had to put him under to clean it around the bend of the ear. We all felt horrible that we didn’t know! I wish he had shown some sign early so it wouldn’t have gotten so bad. They gave us some preventative drops and we clean it once a week instead of every two weeks now. He’s been healthy and happy ever since, but I still feel so bad!

I had a huge black and red Oscar fish about 10 or so inches long. I called my vet to ask him how I can save my sweet Oscar's life and the vet told me that the only thing he does with fish is eat them. At first I laughed but then I felt hopeless and defeated. I treated him with everything and used Melafix and he got better, no thanks to the vet. I know all vets aren't this way but a fish is a families pet as well. I had him for over 10 years which was unusual for an Oscar fish to live that long. I do miss him sometimes. So excited to see this vet help the goldfish.
