  • It might be the most remote restaurant in all of Texas. Find out how this family cafe has fed hungry travelers since the Great Depression.

I've eaten at this cafe numerous times over the years. If at all possible, I would time my visit to get there just before the sun came up. I would sit at a window facing east and watch the sun come up. The Guadalupe Peak would be the most beautiful picture imaginable at that time of morning. Biscuits and gravy or eggs and ham and the sunrise at the Salt Flat Cafe..... WOW, what memories!!! I was by there the summer of 2018 and it did look like the place was closed. Too bad Miss Shirley didn't have someone to carry on the family tradition!!!

I lost my parents on 8/23/74 in a multi family fatality wreck in Salt Flat. I just turned 19. They were going to visit my brother at Ft. Bliss. I stayed home working. A freak rain hit that hot oily asphalt and turned it as slick as ice. The other family was a young Hispanic couple. It was tragic. I'm sure Shirley remembers it. Life is a fragile thing that can change in an instant. It's not what you achieve, it's what you overcome that builds your character. I'm ok. I write and produce praise songs and upload them to CZcams. God bless America.

🤔😊Some day you will find that you just can't do it any longer...stuff means nothing to you...that $300,000 house in the suburbs leaves nothing to be desired...this day and age kiddos are being homeschooled and tutors are available everywhere...TAKE THAT PLUNGE AND GET THE HELL OUT OF DODGE...get about 75 miles out of the metroplex...get rural and focus on YOU!!! I have the lake less than a mile from my house...I don't need that $500,000 lakefront property and others trashing my inlet...I have more where we relocated to than when we lived urbanly...DO IT, you can only improve your health when you live stress-free 😁👍

I love little holes in the wall like this! I'd go out of my way to stop there if I could. I can almost smell the coffee! Friendly, nothing fancy, but a place where you feel instantly welcome when you walk in!

Man! I remember when this was "4 Country Reporter". I guess I was 9 when this series started. And I remember it moving to WFAA and becoming "8 Country Reporter". My dad enjoyed this series from the get go. If it does hit the fan I think I'll go out to West Texas.

Typical west Texas lady, I was raised in west Texas and east New Mexico. Graduation in 1965 at Odessa Permian High. I now live in east Texas, when not staying in Thibodaux, Louisiana. Us boys and girls do travel even at 74 years of age. I do miss it. You all be careful now.

I live in Southeastern New Mexico... I used to work in Midland/Odessa Texas... and I used to live and work in East Texas about 40 miles S. of Longview....

She ain't lyin! I live in EL Paso Tx and have been there a few times to the Salt Flat Cafe! Love the place and the food is great! It's sad that only four yrs later this would be abandoned and look like it hadn't been in use for twenty yrs! Now it truly is a ghost town!

That's the part of the country where you fill the tank before leaving the house and fill it up again just to make it home. And you fill it up again just so you don't run out of gas. You had the tank at the house filled once a month
