  • On my Jet 1336PBD metal lathe I show how to change the change gears.
In order to get ready for an upcoming project, I needed to cut some external metric threads. This is not an uncommon task, but was pretty new for me.
In this video, I show how I change the change gears on my lathe, set the backlash, and use dial indicators to set up for metric thread cutting.

I want to say thank you for taking the time to make this video. I have a Lantaine LAM-350B which is a rebadged version of the Jet 1024. Essentially the little brother to your lathe. I have heard the descriptions of how to do this, however seeing it done is invaluable. It is even better that I got to see the change gear setup on the same lathe. Searching this type of lathe on CZcams does not show many results so to see one in action helps a lot.
On a different note, my wife is in the Army reserves after doing some active time. She would approve of the headgear. Also I will give you a riddle for the branch that I served in, Semper Paratus.
Thank you and keep them coming.

Your comment is well received here. It makes me really happy to hear that people can benefit from my videos, so thank you for letting me know. Members of my family, not me, have and are serving our country. I can't say enough about those that make the commitment and sacrifice to serve their country and the people in their community. So, thank you to you and your wife for your service! Go Army!

If I remember right, the measurement for backlash that is used in the US Army is the RCH. When you had your backlash finally adjusted, I believe you were at about 2 to 3 RCHs. One RCH might’ve been a little too tight. Great video. Good dog buddy.

I have an RCH calibration tool on my list of tools that I need. Thanks for the reminder!

3d printed gears have done me well so far. I usually keep one in the stack up for crash insurance.

That’s a good idea for the crash insurance. The metal gears don’t have much forgiveness! Thank you for watching and providing the comment!

Good idea. That would give you a consistent amount each time. About .001-.003. Thank you and congrats again on 250k views!!

Oh so many ways to do the same thing.
I wouldn't be me if i didn't make suggestion, so, one project you could do is make an adjustable cross slide stop. They really do makevlife simpler if you can go to a hard stop rather than a fial gsuge.
Another suggestion might be to take a look at a video i have showing a modern version of a victorian idea for threading made easy. But in fairness it only really works best with an instant reverse that you get with a VFD.
Looks cold there, we had winter last week in London but for at least the next fortnight we expect double figures, centigrade that is not your Fahrenheit. Makes it much nicer on the fingers when i sit out in the garden at midnight waiting to feed my buddies.😉

Chris, for me the best parts of the videos is the interaction with guys like you and the comments and suggestions, so thank you! Great tip about the hard stop. I'll be sure to check out your video tonight. Thanks again for the all the support!

I do not have that luxury on my lathe.
My video demonstrates a simple thinking out side the box approach. Warning: Not for the squeamish and faint of heart. Lol
