@@spongebobsquarepants-ne6lc I think most human cruelty is a reflection of the circumstances in which people find themselves. Anyway hawk was consistently manipulative and (self-)destructive, and I would let him do it to me as well!!!
@@nazarkgb1 It's funny, because I genuinely don't see how Hawk was ever particularly manipulative, at least not to Tim. Self destructive in a way that also hurt everyone else in his life, 100%! but manipulative, I'm like.. was his asking for political favors really manipulation? He was never anything but perfectly upfront with those requests. And for as much as he definitely lied to other people in his life, he hardly ever did to Tim.
I do get what people mean though, of course, because he absolutely made choices that broke Tim's heart right along with his own. But I feel like calling it manipulation would suggest that he had led Tim on in some way and had continued pursuing him only to get ahead or something. In fact a lot of people do seem to have that reading of Hawk, and I just think it does such a disservice to him as a character and to Matt's performance. To me, Hawk was so clearly madly in love with Tim, and very much kept bringing him back into his life because he genuinely *needed* him in his life, but he was equally terrified that every moment he stayed with Tim was a moment closer to it ending in inevitable disaster wherein Tim would be the one to pay the price for loving him. So it was this constant cycle of him going to extreme lengths to TRY and end it for good because he didn't think there was any other choice, but never actually being able to quit Tim any more than Tim could quit him.
Not that that isn't still definitely messed up in its own way, but yeah, I just look at the scenes of them in the middle of the night when Hawk finally feels free to be his most authentic, loving self, and I'm like... if he's toxic, it's only because the world around him burned him so badly that he didn't feel like he had the choice to let himself be happy 💔At his core, he's Mr. "I stand before you accused of being sweet" 🤧
