Great explanation and a new approach for the old washing mashine motor that I extracted decades ago (laying around ever since). I was brooding about the best application for it since a couple of weeks now (inspired by some video from you), just a bit desperate of how to get over the lack of static magnets without rebuilding the whole bunch of steel, iron and copper.
Since the efficiency is lousy, compared to modern electric car motors (in terms of power-to-weight ratio), I'll probably go for generator use.
Therefore I won't wast any more time and head for your next uploaded video ("1016 Washingmashine to Wind Turbine)...😄

This might work for your e tractor, you can set it to torque mode when accelerating from a stop or going up hill and switch you speed mode with less torque once you are underway.

This was a real good one Rob! my old brain followed along well and I like the duel control of speed and torque.. Now I need a project to go along with this one.. I think maybe a small electric crane for my work shop area.. to help lift those weird parts that you just can not grab efficiently.

When using the motor as a generator , If you have a secondary power source on the stator windings, you actually turn it into a dynamo and should be able to generate more power at low RPM. You could also use the speed sensor to switch off the stator power when the armature is not turning, could be useful if connected to a wind turbine.

That is actually how some larger generators are started. For those large permanent magnets are not an option. To get going they need an initial magnetic field which is provided with external power. Once started they can power itself for this purpose.

thankyou Mr Smith, in England, i think ?? got one just like it, from salvaged whirlpool washer....will check it out, maybe make a dc grinder with it, using homemade 12 18 or 24 volt MOT rewound, and some other for variable speed.....

such a good video, about a decade ago i rescued one of these motors from an old W.M. wanted so much to make it work but mi huge lack of knowledge keep me from achieving anything. I am concerned about you however...I worked as a master electrician at a company called ACA( Aluminum Coil Anodizing)..and so I have years experience working everything electrical...when working with these motors.5 hp and greater please take care to not get any dust in your lungs or even on your hands ..believe me you will save a lot of grief when you get older...

Series wound DC can also produce a runaway condition if not under load, and your armature will fly apart (too many rpms!)
To more reliably make a DC generator, energize the field coil (not series wound) - then spin the armature, and that field coil will induce a current in the armature...
Home made DC vehicles frequently use a 9-inch Netgain (or similar) motor, series wound (i.e. Armature & field coil in series). Push in the clutch, wind that motor up to its highest rpm, and you'll blow up a $1500+ (USD) motor. Series wound DC not under load will runaway from you if given enough current.
Just a tip.. I don’t know if you noticed it also, I noticed I could not see the digital display because of the glare until you put your arm over it that caused the shadow over the digital display allow me to see the digits. Thank you for the video! I learned a lot!

Thanks for sharing this idea. Using washing machine as a generator may help people to produce their own electricity in case of long term blackouts happens. Also converting it to a DC motor may be used as water pump motor to grow vegetation or home made transportation vehicles.

Ralph, you can make a miniature gold mining plant. Conveyer belt and rolling drum I just salvaged 5 mtrs from a 3 in one printer. Im so happy, lol! I will use the small stepper to power both the conveyer and the drum.

You mentioned an alternative wiring that supports torque control. I tried it out using two 20A rectifier circuits with variable outputs and although it worked well to start I quickly started a fire. Would you say I put too much power through the field coils and caused it to overheat?

I've found you can get good power out of electric lawnmower motors with a 3-phase rectifier. They require a controller as a motor to run. But as a generator you just need a rectifier

Thanks for the video. I have used a washing machine motor to run a small industrial sewing machine running on 24 volts DC. All goes ok except I get some significant arcing on the foot switch. I'm thinking it is from a back EMF from the inductance of the motor. Any ideas on how to stop it.

I love your videos. A couple of questions - 1) If you wanted to use it as an AC motor, how could you take advantage of the included "tachometer" to control it's speed? And 2) In either of the DC wireups or as an AC wireup, can the motor itself be reversed? Just curious to take it further another step and what these motors can do?
1. "tachosensor" generates signal thats frequency is proportional to rotation speed, so you can use circuit that measure that signal and control AC to the motor by triac. You can stabilize rotation speed that can be independent of the mechanical load of the motor. 2. Yes it can be reversed, it depends how you connect rotor and stator .

@@ThinkingandTinkering Thank you @Darth Fate. It's been a long time since I was at University and learned these basics (early '90's), so I'm a bit rusty. I was trying to figure out how I could incorporate something like that, to an AC Centrifugal Transfer Pump. I install and remove heating oil tanks here in the States - The pump I have is one speed, and pumps at a rate of 1500 gallons/hr. This is great for pumping the tank empty before I remove it; but if I wish to deliver that oil into someone else's residential tank, through the normal 'fill' pipes, it's much too fast. So I was wondering how I could make the pump speed "variable" to pump at a lower rate when needed. Currently, I just use a DC pump powered by a homemade ATX PC power supply modified into a bench power supply, which has a much lower flow rate. It would be easy to make the DC pump 'variable' speed should I ever need to (which I don't) - but using just one pump, one setup, would be easier I'm leery of physically 'restricting' the outlet of the AC pump so I don't ruin the pump, or overwork it.

The seperate stator supply is a good idea. This way it can be efficient as a low voltage DC motor. If you put them in series as they normally would be torque will be very limited on low voltage DC.
Stator and Rotor connections are connected seperately to the control board because if you want to run the motor in the opposite direction you need to connect either stator or rotor connections the other way around. On both AC or DC, does not matter.
These motors have a more or less constant torque for any rpm. That is they will increase RPM till either the load provides the same torque back as happens in your video on low DC voltage ( where mechanical load is just air and bearing resistance ) or they'll fly apart into pieces due to centrifugal force. Torque is more or less constant because of rotor winding inductance which will decrease rotor current a bit at high rpm.
This is old technology now. Virtually every modern washing machine will have a brushless motor and an electronic inverter circuit to create the rotating field. The big version of what you'll find in for example harddisk drives to rotate the platters or the paper advance motor in many laserprinters.
Damn... I'd better try scrounge a few of them old ones while they're still around.
direct drives are coming in mate but still many many makes use this kind of motor - it will be a few years before these can no longer be found - I think 5 -10 years myself

TMT = Too Much Technology. would like to vision, a SIMPLER WORLD. high tech is an addictive greedy method, of 'making home appliances ' I have a 30 year old washing machine, with about 18 push buttons, and an orbital transmission, top load. High Efficiency washing machines, how can they produce clean clothes..?....don't use enough water. Never a problem........not a MOSFET controlled dryer, either.....(whirlpool junk) have a Duet dryer in garage, won't even spin the drum, just hums, till i give the drum a 'hand' start....good day, sir, enjoy your tea and crumpets...

@@petersack5074 Actually a mosfet is a much more robust way to switch hi current than a mechanical switch is. The thing is that is only so for a well designed circuit and for a well known load. A poorly designed circuit can and will fail maybe in a few cycles or maybe in a few thousand cycles. When mishandled parts of the die get's eaten away in every cycle till the point it fails. For triacs it's the same. For example a too high dI/dt where current gets too high when only part of the die is conductive yet.

we might USE LIQUID heated to the boiling temperature (boiling temperature depends on pressure on piston, let it be atmosphere pressure 1 Bar/100 kPa)
So we boil water, expand volume with 1BAR pressure, supply heat 212 F/ 100 C
in the process, then we store remain warm(overheat if compare it to the environment temperature)
And - without effort return piston to the start position(thats it, all what for all of it,
this key component, we got it)
In the next stage we return stored warm into system and supply additional heat
intto the system
And repeat it again and again never emit any heat to the surroundings
All warm eventually would become power.
We heated water, we get what we want(power)
we store remain overheat to the storage with 0 effort
in order to use it in the next stage, and repeat
we use heat in storage , then supply additional heat
and repeat it again and again without waste of energy
therefore all warm energy will become power even though not at once
(thi is idea)
if we talking about water , temperature of boiling water is 212 F/100 C
Coefficient of efficiency may be something around 4 (0.25 points input power to obtain 1 point warm energy)
And all iof it as we could see , might be converted to power
another words input 1, output 4 , difference would obtained from surroundings warm (another words it may be little bit colder if then)

What if magnet field(force what affect the straight section of wire per miter(not coil))
might be almost constant, as weight force per kilogram near earth surface.
So to obtain interaction similar to straight section of current
we should stretch opposit current away from us.
(we dont deal with this bullish... North and Sourth mythicale poles, its just interaction between parallel currents in plain)
If source of force far enough and its force enough powerful

is model which consist of battery, resistance (R=1) and electric transformator but not like letter O but like I , lust straight piece of
ferrite.
Type of signals "quadrupol" U =1 I(current) =1
So we have battery 10 volts, 10 amps, consequently attached resistor and transformator
But transformation would be afeccted by the current, thats why we were include
cylindric magnet around transformator to compensate 10 amps current.

So without input supply input power to the trunsformator
we have 10 Amps 10 Volts = 100 watt
When we turn on transformator input will be then
11 amps 10 volt from battery, and 1 amps 1 volts from transformator
= 110+1=111
Output heat power in resistor 11 volts, 11 Amps =121 watt
121 >111 , we get 10 wats more
BUT!
lets see what would happen when we replace permanent magnet to
coil wit 10 Amps, 0 Volts
We should maintain current when transformator turn on , and therefore our Voltage will be 10 Volts.
HERE IT IS -this 10 wats waste
Therefore we see that permanent magnet could gain power into system by just remaining CURRENT the same
Nowhere saw describe like this,

I did notice that a lot of fractional horse power motors int he US tend to be induction motors - that is a shame - but you also often find universal motors in power tools

Robert how much torque can you get out of that motor? I am wondering if it would work for the electic who car you are building. I have a very similar project in mind but mine will require the electric motor run a 12gpm hydraulic pump from a case ingersoll 448 garden tractor which will provide 2500 psi IIRC. I have a few of those as donors and want to make an electric 4wd tractor out of two of them.
the reason the little car has stalled is because I need a motor and I can afford to buy one so this is a candidate for that - so - we are on the same wavelength here lol - the torque is going to be related to the current carrying capacity of the field coils and the number of turns in those coils - I am not sure what the wire gauge is so I can really estimate the amps it will carry and that makes it difficult to estimate the flux - so mostly what I will do is run it until it burns out - I have two so no worries there and find out what it will do - my standard approach when I am. not sure lol
@@ThinkingandTinkering if you monitor the thermal switch and shutdown when it trips the motor should be ok. I am considering finding two identical motors for my project and connecting the shafts together to form a higher torque motor. I have one of my case ingersoll 448 tractors running on a 10hp Chinese diesel I have used it for about 5 years like that around my farm but that motor is slightly smaller than I need for the pump it will stall under heavy loads. But your application should be lower torque as I have hydraulic losses.

If you turn this motor into a DC generator, how much current can you get out of it before heat becomes an issue, or diameter/gauge of output power wires becomes an issue?
Need reach a minimum of 600 rpm and voltage regulator, to count also more amps get absorbed by the batteries harder will be to spin the motor
So I have a question that I think you could answer for me. I have a dc motor from a treadmill. One of the brushes was missing so I connected the brush wire to a paperclip just to see if the motor was still usable. So my question is what would cause the motor to spin faster if I took said paper clip and held it to the commentator then slowly moved it closer to the opposite brush. I was able to get 5x the speed by holding the clip about half an inch away from the brush while still applying same voltage as before. I hope I described this well enough for you to understand what I am asking. Only reason is if you can get 5x the speed from a motor then we wouldn't need nearly the size motors we use now to achieve same results, right?
