The thing with 13 Reasons Why is that the show creators did research and learned from mental health resources what NOT to do when making a show about suicide (for example, showing the suicide on screen), but they. Didn't listen. At all. In fact it actually increased teen suicidal threats in Canada, mostly in preteens who watched the show on websites that advertised it as suitable for children 12+. It's fucked up.

I didn't think it really romanticized it. The suicide scene was legitimately terrifying the only gripe I have is that it shows her as having hatched a massive scheme to wreck the lives of her bullies after her death in a ridiculous way. Her parents are totally heart broken and she basically psychologically tortured Clay and Ricky who actually deeply cared for her and her well being.
Usually i’m not a person with depression but while i was watching it I was always feeling sad. So yeah maybe for somone emphatic and with suicidal thoughts, 13 could have made things worse

Thirteen Reasons Why is actually really similar to the book that came out 10 years ago (which didn't get as much hate and was actually praised for bringing awareness to bullying and suicide). The book was aimed towards school kids and teens and it really opened my eyes, my friends' eyes, my peers' eyes, et cetera back in middle school. Granted, there are instances where the show deviates from the book, but that's going to happen in every book to show/movie rendition. The book helped so many people! And I'm sure the TV show would have had the same effect if people actually watched it, especially from Hannah's eyes.
The hate is quite ignorant in my opinion. As someone who dealt with suicidal tendencies and bullies (and I hated myself because of them) and still deals with depression, this show gives a voice to people like me and is extremely accurate. Since hardly anyone reads anymore with all the new technology around (at least in my own observations), this is a great way to provide this kind of material toward the new generations.

Bobby, I love your videos, I’ve been watching them since Cinemasins advertised you and your channel. But I politely disagree with your point on 13 Reasons Why. I didn’t think that the show romanticized Hannah Baker’s Suicide. As an individual who has dealt with depression in the past and has attempted suicide, I found myself crying while watching the show. In the scene when she actually kills herself in the bathtub, I realized how close I was to doing what she did her parents (the trauma they experience after the suicide) to my parents; and how Hannah’s depression had so many chances to be resolved before suicide; and how suicide would have affected my friends and others close to me as well. I think the show illustrates how suicide, especially teen suicide, can negatively effect communities and families; and that people and schools across the nation need to be further educated on suicide and depression in order to prevent deaths like Hannah’s. But that’s just my two cents.
I also agree with you. It was not about killing yourself. It was all about being kind to each other n care if someone is not ok. It also mentioned how gay people feel or how some people treat them, bullying, not having good parents (Justin's mother) etc. Generally, being careful about what you say n what you do.

The story is intended to shed a light on the effect suicide can have on the people around you, even people who know OF you. Maybe never even heard of you. I have been there. Hearing of a classmate's little sister's suicide, and seeing how it affected the community, strongly affected me and is still, along with Anna Akana's story, a key reminder of what would happen if i went through with it.
What went wrong in this story, however, was blaming other people for it. Blame is a horrible way to go about it. It's just there for drama. In real life, everyone around you is already blaming themselves. You don't need to do that for them.

I agree with the 13 Reasons Why bit as well. I bought the book sometime around last April (I was 12 then). In the shop I only hsd time to read the back of it as I was in a rush. It doesn't say anything on the back about how this book was about suicide and had dark themes that could trigger people. To me it sounded like the girl Hannah had died mysteriously and knew she was going to be killed so she left tape recordings to help people find her killer. I have read books with similar themes in the past and enjoyed them so I bought it. I'm looking at the back of the book now and no where does it mention suicide.

Every copy should have trigger warnings or at least tell the person buying the book about the dark themes in this book. I found it in the teen section and there wasn't even a "Not suitable for younger readers" warning on it
