No one prepared me for adult acne. I had a lot of issues growing up and especially in my teenage years and I always used to tell myself "at least you got good skin genes." At age 19, I started noticing my pores on my nose were getting bigger and bigger, my skin redder, small breakouts every other month (which was a lot for me, I had flawless skin before) and now nearing the end of my 22nd year, I have cystic acne, I have active breakouts at all times (havent had a break between them in 2 months) currently I have a cyst the size of a gumball on my chin, the skin on my nose and forehead is bumpy and flaky no matter what i do, and i have constant breakouts all across my jaw.

I totally feel you!! I just hit 35 years and BOOMMM, breakouts. I have never had any skin issues before. I really think it's hormone related. I have spent so much on vitamins, dermatologist etc etc. Managing stress is the key factor. Do not give up , I am still hopeful

Acne on your jawline usually means you have a hormonal imbalance. Maybe talk to your doctor about switching birth control. My jaw acne cleared for the most part when I stopped using foundation. The acne on my cheekbones are from eating sugar, sometimes I treat myself to candy.
What helped my flakey skin was only washing it ones a day with just water, so that it's not so harsh.

2.skin bacteria ( don’t strip your skin, chemicals are harsh)
    3. Side effects ( all acne medications have side effects)

5.scars left over ( harder to treat then acne :(

Nobody tells you that once you start putting foundation over acne you’ll never stop! You become accustomed to the look of the skin you “could” have and start to feel inadequate without it. Makeup can be an instant confidence booster but if you’re not careful it can turn into a mask you never quite feel comfortable without.

To be honest no one talks about how even though your skin is clearing up you can still see your hyperpigmentation and it makes you so insecure of your face. Specially when around others that have no acne. You become so aware of yours. Like on a regular day you think you’re fine and then you hang out with Someone that has pretty good skin. And everything just goes kaput for you? Does that ever happen to any of you?

No one explains that you might not "grow out of it". I've had acne since 6th grade, and I kept telling myself that eventually my skin would clear and I would pass that stage of my life. 14 years later I still haven't "grown out of it", it's just changed to different kinds of acne.
Adult acne is so much harder than teenage acne, and it's very isolating.

    • @caitlin786
      @caitlin786 Před 5 lety +5

Sarah Margaret I’m sorry but I have to disagree. It can always be cleared. However, for some people it can take years to clear it. Acne HAS to have a cause, therefore once you find the cause you can fix it.
If you haven’t cleared it then you haven’t tried everything. Acne can be caused due to hormones, stress, sleep, diet, your liver, digestive system, environment, a hidden food intolerance, etc. There are so many things that can cause it.
I recommend seeing a naturopath because they work to find the cause of your acne instead of trying to cure the symptoms of acne with harsh medicines or creams etc.

Having acne sucks. And it’s even harder when almost everyone around you has beautiful clear skin while eating unhealthy and not really washing their faces. I have tried soo many things for acne, drugstore, high end products and nothing has worked so far. Waking up everyday and looking into the mirror, seeing my acne and how it hurts when I’m trying to cover it up.. sometimes it’s not even the acne, it’s the scars that take months to heal.. I just hope to get rid of my acne in 2019, that’s my goal

    • @robyngrabar9016
      @robyngrabar9016 Před 5 lety +14

I had acne from my early teens to my late twenties. Like you, I tried it all and spent a lot of money. In the end it was when I started using coconut oil as a cleanser that my acne cleared up. This sounds bad because we tend to think that oil is the problem so adding oil would seem to make the problem worse but it fixed mine. I massage organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil into my skin then wipe it off with tissues. I do this twice in a row - once to remove make-up/concealer and then to remove anything else. I do this before I have a shower every night so any residue is removed when I dry my face with a towel. I also use a scrub 1-2 times per week. In the morning, I don't wash my face, I just rinse it with water and dry - again, something I thought would make it worse but it didn't. I made no other changes to my diet or lifestyle and my acne cleared up. The only other product I use on my skin is a tinted sunscreen - no moisturisers, toners, serums etc. Every time I try to use a conventional cleanser my skin breaks out again so I stick with coconut oil. I'm now 36 and people tell me I look much younger. Wish I knew about it when I was 14! This worked for me and although I understand everyone is different so it might not be a blanket solution, I hope it helps. Google coconut oil for skin and you'll learn more. It didn't cost nearly as much as the high end products.

No one ever prepared me for the horror of FINALLY getting rid of your acne and after a few months or so it all coming back again. Suddenly all the confidence I have gained from having clear skin drains and I'm back where I started. Even though the acne that comes back is minor compared to the horrible, cystic acne I used to have, I am are reminded of the mindset and horror of the bad acne I suffered with. Pretty much I was never warned that even once my acne was gone, its an extremely difficult road to mental health recovery.

    Things that have helped me.
    1. Cut out meat and dairy.
    2. Use a cream cleanser - no gel cleansers they are too stripping
    3. Simplify - don't put on anything and everything.
    4. Introduce a retinol into your nightly routine - Paula's Choice 1% has changed my skin!
    5. Sheet masks work - my favourites are from Innisfree and help when my skin is breaking out.
    6. Moisturise - even if your skin is oily, moisturise. I use the korean method of moisturising my pimple away, not drying them out.
    7. Use vitamin C for dark spots - Paula's Choice Vitamin C spot treatment is the ONLY thing that has faded my acne scars.
    8. Sunscreen is non negotiable - if you leave the house, put it on
    9. Use cold or tepid water to wash your face, never ever use hot water.
    10. Treat your skin like you would treat a babies skin. That means no picking, no prodding, no harsh chemicals, no squeezing, no rough abrasives. None of it. Trust me as someone who used to pick and stare at their skin constantly in the mirror and put 1789 things on one pimple to get rid of it, none of it works. You freak your skin out doing that.
    11. Change pillow cases every few days
    12. Stick to a set of products and give it a few months before you switch. As I've mentioned before, I really like PC's range, they are affordable, gentle and they work (not a rep)
    13. Take a fish oil or if you are veg/vegan take a DHA. Works wonders for your skin.
Hope this helps some one x

I think the biggest problem with acne is that people don't see that as an illness, there is this thinking that if you have acne you are somehow doing it to yourself. Wear too much make up, drink too much juice, whats wrong with your face bla bla bla. That really hurts and makes acne 10 times worse. Those people would never say "you're doing that to yourself" to a person who suffers from cancer, diabetes, pneumonia.. But yeah acne is your own fault and how dare you look like that. I am really tired of living with acne, unfortunately in my case stress makes it a milion time worse and my life is shit so I got a ton of stress and a ton of acne [*]

This! I suffer so much because people treat me like my acne is my fault. I've tried all kinds of topicals, different medication (antibiotics, prebiotics, birth control, ...). I don't wear makeup, I'm very serious about my skin care routine and I follow a strict vegan, low-fat and anti-inflammatory diet. I change pillow cases, sheets, towels, scarfs, ... any kind of fabric that comes even close to my face every other day. I've had my blood tested for vitamin deficiencies and thyroid malfunction. I've been to so many doctors (GPs, dermatologists, gynecologists, naturopathic and holistic doctors,...) and estheticians that I lost count. I've spent so much time and money on this skin condition... Literally my whole life has been turned upside down by this disease. Yet, I'm still breaking out. I still have to deal with stressful situations such as presentations, working, getting my degree etc, but I have found that these things are completely manageable and I can handle them. I cannot handle though, the stress and agony toxic people put me through. Veganism is not always a cure for acne. There are many vegans who struggle with the issue. Hormones are a HUGE dilemma when it comes to your skin and would be the first place to start. I do agree that obsessive behaviour comes from dealing with acne in women, I cannot speak for any other gender, but it does begin to chew away at your mental state. To think people cannot leave their homes without putting on layers of makeup...heart breaking. We need more people in social media to be more honest. We need to be kinder to imperfection and we need to know that what we see in film and television is filtered and unreal. We cannot control the cards we are dealt, but we can control our words and our thoughts. Be kind and gentle.

alicia bonito It can always be cleared.

Hi Cassandra, I agree with everything that you said. I've had acne for around 8 years and I have those boxcar scars that you talk about. They are a daily reminder of the stress and constant unhappiness that I had for almost a decade. I think that no one talks about acne as a disease that deeply affects mental health. I don't want to sound dramatic, but it really took a toll on me emotionally and physically. Everything I did or did not do was because I had a face full of cystic pimples, and I felt disgusting. Acne was all I could think about. When I had full coverage makeup on in public, I just felt fake because it was as if I was hiding who I really was. When I took the makeup off, I was grossed out and felt sorry for myself. I think it's hard for people who haven't gone through it to understand the mental trauma that can occur. Winifred Chan same, girl! I have icepick scars on my cheeks and it reminds me of the cystic acne that plagued me in my earlier 20s out of nowhere. People commented about it all the time, especially my family, many of whom are so focused on looks and weight (and made sure to let me know when I was breaking out-which was always- and when I gained weight). It really drags you down to ground zero. I wore tons of makeup and worked at Sephora at the time, so I also felt like every customer was looking at me thinking “I’m not taking her advice-look at her skin!”. I watch a lot of your videos because I have come to realize if you can use it so can I. I have talked to a lot of my friends, only recently because I just tried to hide it for years, and some of them can’t drink alcohol or eat chocolate. Then I use IT confidence in a cream or La Roche Posay fragrance free lotion. Here is what’s crazy I grew up terrified of using anything with oil in it but now I use rose hip oil after I apply my face cream when I go to sleep. This has slow d down my oil production and gotten rid of the dry flaky patches. Also my acne scars are almost gone. If I hadn’t discovered You Tube I would have never discovered all these tips. I would still be dealing with cystic acne and breakouts everywhere. I was miserable and pretty much used my concealer stick like a foundation stick. I didn’t have a problem when I was a teenager. No one warned me that I should consider my treatment options a little differently as a woman of colour. In my earliest years of struggling with acne (going on 12 now..), I was prescribed a lot of topical creams and gels to help treat active acne that actually ended up bleaching my skin. Later on - when I had some friends tell me they were getting lazer treatment for scars and seeing her results, I had hoped this was something I could benefit from. But because of my skin tone this wasn't an option. I'm lucky that the medical professionals at least let me know this and I didn't go through with a treatment that would have most likely damaged my skin further... But in a world where nothing is working to treat my acne, and/or scars, it sucks that my options are limited.

Thank you for posting this video! I have spent several years researching acne and how to get ride of it. Tried countless brands and cleaning regimens, have watched friends and family do the medication and seen the side effects of getting off the pills. I have my ups and downs of acne, stress and popping those pimples are my main causes for acne flare ups, and as I’ve seen several others. Thank you for bringing up the scars. I can recall as a young teen, my dad telling me that my face was going to scare if I continued to pop my zits. Now that my face is clearer I see the scars and am sad because of it. But I know that my face looks so much better than ever before and I do wear makeup but I feel comfortable enough in my own skin that I sometimes go without. You are an inspiration! Keep it up! Thank you!!!

Hi Cassandra, thank you for sharing your story and making all of us, acne sufferers, like we are not alone. I had cystic acne, now I am 29 and I have hormonal acne. I think that in my case no one ever told me or talked about that you should NEVER wash your face with hot water! That was something that I concluded myself. Hot water is bad for your skin, it burns your skin and makes it dry and unbalanced. Also, I did not know that you can start to remove scars, when you stop having acne. Probably in my 40s or 50s :( One thing more, I think that people have to be informed of quantity of sugar that processed food has and juices. Great video and I hope that you will help a lot of people that have the same problems like us, because it is hard to understand something like this if you did not had this terrible experience. :)

I suffered acne since 15 years old. Have PCOS. Have acne all over my face. Under medication which is doxycycline. I dont know if it helps. Still treating my acne until now. I dont know what to do. I dont look in the mirror when theres light. Only look in the mirror when its dark. I even put the acne treatment onto my face with my room dark. I drink a lot of water. I even took supplement which is Evening primrose oil 1000 mg for a month now. My skin aint clear. I dont know what to do but all I know I just want to stay home all my life.

Ouch. I SO relate & remember it well. THREE months of staying at home (at 38) after missing a year & a half of high school (14-17) & random misery in between the two. CRAZY painful, INDEED. Like the rest of the suffering, it brought me closer to Jesus & made me born again (a REAL thing that SUPERNATURALLY happens with Jesus (God)! 🙋
      💔👣👣💖
...suffering to finally relent in repentant surrender to seek our Maker (Jesus) is FAR better than forfeiting our inheritance of ETERNAL LIFE in Heaven & ending up in gnashing Hell fire for ETERNITY. Some people are in denial of that fact, but some are simply distracted to stay unaware. I was distracted for 38 years. I AM no longer distracted ("in the dark" as you so accurately described). Be encouraged. Jesus IS God & He can fix ALL of it. He healed & saved me. He can CERTAINLY do the same for you.

To get rid of acne scars, glue and cinnamon face mask. Mix until it looks like a paste wait about 30 minutes or until dry and peel off. Research any type of peel of mask those help the most. (Benefits from glue & cinnamon, redness, blackheads, closes pores, removes dirt & oil, smooth skin. Also vaseline or vicks vaporub overnight, not too much on skin. Hydrocortisone max 10 helps with redness as well. And ice can flatten an inflamed cyst. Also avoid dairy for breakouts. For Milk, switch to almond milk, and chocolate, switch to dark chocolate. Ice cream well you'll have to look for dairy free, eventually you will find 1 you'll like. And soap/body wash try fragrance free aveeno helps as well. Don't dry out ur skin with lotion it will only make it worse cause of the ingredients. Lol I'm only 17 I think I should be a dermatologist but like not fake and only wanting money 😂 message me back if u need any advice or info. I've searched high and low on the web.

Like what Cassandra said, nobody tells you that you can overdo medication. My derm gave me 5 different acidic solutions along with a harsh soap to apply day and night. He told me not to apply anything moisturising. You can imagine what a disaster that turned out to be. What really helped me was stepping away from dermatologists and finding my own routine. What actually helped me and even cured my acne was switching to all baby products from Bioderma and balancing out my hormones. I wish I had known this 12 years ago though, I wouldn't have left so much scarring on my face had I known it earlier.

i have such bad breakouts, and nothing I do works. I am 15 so teenage acne comes along with that and some of my family members have adult acne or had teenage acne and it went away with age. but I also live in a "meat" heavy family, its like almost the culture ig i live around and personally i dont like it. its really hard living with a big family on a budget and we cant buy food that is catered to me and then but food for everyone else. I did have a job for awhile and went vegan for about 2 months and i was in such a good state with my skin, mood, and my over all happiness. but know that i have quit my job due to focus school work and I don't have a form of income I have no idea what to do? I do my best to eat a salad instead of a burger or use skin care products ik wont work for my skin type. but my skin goes through moods ig i can call it were for a little bit things will clear up but it is still moderately bad and then other times it gets really bad right below my cheekbones my chin especially and the forehead. im so lost rk trying to figure something out and im in a stage were i dont wanna leave the house and I need advice or a guide on what to do with a budget. i try my best not to consume dairy products like yogurt or milk and instead drink coconut milk and I dont see anything diffrent in my overall skin complexion. im rambelling and havent even covered everything in full detail I'm just so lost and dont know what to do.

Hi! I'm 19 and I've turned my whole diet around for acne. Most of my family prefer a diet of white rice and oily meat but my mom and I eat a healthier diet for medical reasons. I'm from South East Asia so while the cost of living is different, I'll just give examples of the most affordable things I buy for my diet. With the equivalent of $10 in my currency, I buy a week's worth of rye bread, lettuce, herbs, tofu, carrots, yogurt, and nuts in the grocery. (You can also sign up for co-ops for bulk buying or go to local markets.) Thats the base of my meals. Other food like tomatoes, onion, garlic, etc come from my mom. I think those would be a good start for you. Don't get too overwhelmed!

elijaharcher_03 sounds like you’re doing a lot right!! Maybe just have a smaller portion of meat when your family has it? Food isn’t always the problem. Acne HAS to have a cause, therefore once you find the cause you can fix it. Acne can be caused due to hormones, stress, sleep, diet, your liver, digestive system, environment, a hidden food intolerance, etc. There are so many things that can cause it.
I recommend seeing a naturopath because they work to find the cause of your acne instead of trying to cure the symptoms of acne with harsh medicines or creams etc. they could also give you more advice on what to do a budget. Good luck, you’re not alone x

I think one of the worst parts of acne are really the scars.
For example I often have pimples on me cheeks because I have hormonal acne. My skin is way more sensitive in that area and when the pimple goes away after an eternity, it leaves a red mark which really takes years to fully disappear, especially when you like being outside in the sun, even with sun protection. It fades more and more but it’s visible for a long time.
I recently said to a friend that I’m really happy about my skin rn and she replied that she also think it’s gotten a lot better because my forehead is clear (I don’t get scars on there) but that there are still breakouts on my cheeks. So I told her that these are all scars, that my skin is flat and clear at the moment..until I get my next period.
So this is shitty but I learned to accept it and to still find myself beautiful. Scars are also easier to cover up than pimples so I’m very happy about that.
Hopefully my skin stays the way it is rn and I can get rid of the antibiotic Creme I’m using right now...kind of scared that it will all come back, has anyone experience with this?

A few months ago I got severe folliculitis on my legs, resulting in pustules everywhere, which were big, sore and inflamed. My doctor prescribed me antibiotics which them go down, however I had to pop them with a needle to release the pus. After/during they were healing I used vitamin E oil every night after my shower and slathered my legs in this. I think this majorly helped with the scarring, and now you wouldn’t even be able to tell.
I’m saying all of this because I believe it may help someone who has scars whether from acne or something else, although it is no guarantee. I would also say that it’s best to start as soon as the wound has healed, as it probably won’t work as well on older scars. If you’re using an oil on your face for the first time, you also must be ware that it could cause more breakouts from the excess oil your skin isn’t used to.
Don’t quote me on any of this, and good luck to anyone who is struggling with something similar. 😊
