Boat Trailer Best Practices

  • You may have seen people struggling at a ramp to load a trailer, or maybe boat trailering makes you a bit nervous. The more you do it, the easier it gets and more comfortable you become. We trailer A LOT! In this video we cover the boat trailer best practices:

      Nice segment. This is Bodnar Boat Works in PHX, AZ. I would suggest adding in hooking up the safety chain on the trailer head gear by the winch. This is also very important as we do a lot of insurance work on boats and trailers and for some some reason boaters have to remember they can get rear-ended while trailering and that chain will help to keep the boat off the roof of their tow vehicle and also is a nice safety in case their winch strap breaks. Also a good marine service center will have a wheel bearing check when they perform an annual service every year. Also a BIG problem across the country is a lot of boat ramps are not at the wright angle and if you have surge brakes your master cylinder is in your coupler and the the brake fluid cap has a hole hole in it so it can breath as you may loose a little brake fluid from time to time and if the trailer coupler has to go under water to float the boat off now the lake water seeps into the break fluid and you have water in your cast iron mater cylinder and wheel cylinders and it will rust the whole system out very fast and stop your breaks from working and it's also a very expensive repair.       You forgot to mention bearings and while I am here when you adjust your bearings you want about a 1/8" free play when you grab the top and bottom of the wheel.
      Bearings fail from being too tight not too loose.

    Explain for people the difference between transom support and just an enging support and how the first saves your transom from stress while on the trailer.

    In and out of water quick as possible to reduce water seepage into bearings. Stainless screws and bolts in bunks.
    Frog eyes on small mirrors.
    Proper tounge weight.
    Temp sensor for hubs on long trips.
    Only driver in vehicle at boat ramp and windows down.

    I am a strong believer in buying a tongue weight gauge. It’s a pressure gauge that tells you how many pounds of tongue weight you have with your boat. If you are only towing the boat, you can measure tongue weight at a good highway truck scale. Or perhaps a marina that has a weight gauge. Then you’re OK. I bought one because I tow my boat 1,000 miles every year to our vacation spot and I load the boat with gear. In measuring my tongue weight I found the boat/trailer I bought was actually too far back on the trailer and I moved it ahead one foot to get the tongue weight correct. Then I weigh the tongue weight each trip to ensure I’m getting the best possible fore-aft weight on my trailer to make highway travel safe. People disagree on what is an optimal tongue weight for a given trailer/load weight, but for my 5,000 pound center console boat and two-axle (four wheel) aluminum trailer, I try to get a tongue weight of around 400 pounds. Conventional wisdom says tongue weight should be 7-10% of total trailer weight (boat+trailer+load), which means for me from 350-500 pounds. FWIW, moving my boat back 12” reduced tongue weight about 100 pounds to within the recommended range. Just my two cents!

    Great info! My trailer problem is that I believe my winch post needs moved forward some. Even with the bow eye up against the stop and the boat is on level ground, just stepping on the swim ladder to get in the boat makes the hitch wheel start to raise off the ground....and I'm not that heavy!!

      Keith, yes, that may work. The other thing that can be done is moveing the axle(s) back as they should be able to be moved on most trailers.
