One of the truly GREAT American rock bands. Criminally underappreciated.
These guys have always been hugely underrated. They were a monster band in their day. The fact they’re not in the Rock Hall of Fame is a crime, they deserve it far more than other acts that did make it. Shame on them.

Grand Funk Railroad is a great American rock band from the 70's. "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)" is one of my favorites. But they had a lot of great hits such as "Some Kind Of Wonderful", "The Loco-Motion", "Walk Like A Man", "Shinin' On", "Bad Time" etc.

Mel Schacher was the 'bassist' on the viewers left. There are a lot of great songs in their catalog. For a period in the Seventies they were one of the 'biggest' bands in America. Recommended: "We’re an American Band", "I’m Your Captain (Closer To Home)", "Footstompin’ Music"...

Welcome back brother! I enlisted in 72, made one Gulf of Tonkin cruise and when we were to go back in 73 we were called to the Indian ocean and Arabian Sea for the Arab Israeli war. Two years active four years reserve.

Yes nickel bag meant five dollars worth of "weed" and from what Mark Farner (the guitarist in an interview said that they were too scared of LSD, cocaine and any thing chemical. I believe the bassist, Mel Schacter had just turned 18 and Mark and drummer, Don Brewer were both 21. I'm pretty sure I got that right but if not one of your listeners will surely let you both and me know for sure! Love your channel!!

If I’m not mistaken the guitar player was 18 and the bass player and drummer were 20 when this was recorded. Take a minute and absorb that… three kids making this much sound in what is quite possibly one of the best live performances ever recorded. These guys played a show at Shea Stadium in NY and the crowd was so lit that the building was in danger of physical damage…
A great 70’s trio from Flint, MI. “We’re An American Band”, “I’m Your Captain/Closer To Home”, “Footstompin’ Music”. “Some Kind Of Wonderful”, “The Locomotion”, “Walk Like A Man”, “Rock & Roll Soul” to name a couple other songs. In the early 70’s, they opened for Led Zeppelin and they drew a bigger reaction from the fans than they did. Which at that time was unheard of. And I think Led Zeppelin’s manager kicked them off the tour cause they were outperforming them.
Forgot to mention that this was recorded in 1969. You're looking at the only band to sell out Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles. Grand Funk Railroad were awesome, check out We're an American Band, I'm Your Captain, Some Kind of Wonderful, Heartbreaker (live) is insane, and so many more.

Grand Funk Railroad from 1969 through 1975 was the most popular live band in the world selling out major stadiums and arenas globally. In this video, Mel on bass was only 18 years old, Don was 19 and Mark 20. What is most incredible is that this sound came from only a 3 man band but 3 guys with immense talent. My favorite band ever and I owned every albulm that they ever put out. By the way, Mark is still performing live shows with his band, still sounds like he is 20 and he is now 70 years old.Mark wrote 90% of the songs, played bass early in his career, of course lead guitar and great vocals, he also plays keyboards on many GFR songs and also plays drums as well...and all at a high skill level. Amazingly talented man...Mel was maybe the best bass guitarist in the world in the early 70's as well and Don is incredible on drums.
The song that I remember most from this band is titled, We’re An American Band. Indeed they were. I really like the guitar riffs in the second part of this song. And the lead singer. Wow. It takes a special talent to yell into the microphone and make it sound great. And the drummer. He got a workout.

they had one of the best live albums that i've ever heard. i've bought in album ,8 track, and cassette and dvd . it is still in my car. heartbreaker is just one of their great tracks
The Beatles played Shea Stadium in New York in both 1965 and 1966 and both concerts took over two weeks to sell out. Grand funk Railroad played Shea Stadium in July 1971, the concert sold out in less than 72 hours. From 1969 to 72 Grand funk was the hottest rock band.
Mark still performs regularly here by his hometown of Flint, MI. His group is called American Band now. He also sang gospel for a while.
I graduated high school in 1969. I first saw Grand Junk Railroad in concert in Long Beach California in 1970. I really didn't know much about them at the time. I remember thinking how much sound was produced by just three guys. One of the great American rock bands. Underappreciated. If you liked this song, you should listen to some of their others which I think are even better.

My older brother took me to see Grand Funk on April 29, 1971 at Cobo Hall in Detroit.. a week before I left for Vietnam.. I'll never forget that concert.. my brother died before I got home..
Bass player was 19, the lead guitar and drummer were 21 and all that in a studio in front of just 10 or so people, and put that kind of effort into it!
The best three man band who ever took the stage. They took a "Animals " song and gave it life.

For ME, these 3 guys were the definition of "Power Trio" back in the day. This was the best, most energetic, live performance I've ever seen. LOVED the fuzz-tone bass -- just amazing. And these guys produced this sound with just the 3 of them and with instruments limited by the technology of the day.
They played all the big festivals back in the day. They had a talent for pulling together a large audience int the music.

just how popular they were, GFR became the "Main Act". GFR and would be known as the originaters of "Stadium Rock". They
filled stadiums across the USA and Europe and sold out Shea, in 72-hours !! The Beatles took 3-weeks to sell-out Shea !!
I saw them twice in 1971 and they were AWESOME !! That year, at Pirates World in Dania, Fl. the Promoters sold 15,000
tickets for a outdoor venue, that only held 10,000 and the people who couldn't get in rioted and over-turned 3 Miami
police cars !!
If their manager (a friend) hadn't taken every penny and all their rights, and left them NOTHING, they would have been
the biggest Band EVER !!
Their leader and frontman Mark Farner is still rock'in today, after decades of legal battles to finally, get the "rights"

Crazy thing is GFR played like this every night, most of their concerts almost three hours long. Each concert they played as if it was their last.

Grand Funk Railroad were one of the best rock groups from the 1970's. They had two number one hits "We're An American Band" and "The Loco-Motion". My favorite song from them is their last top 10 hit "Bad Time", It is melodic 1970's rock at it's very best. I hope you continue reacting to more of their songs.

I saw this back in 1969 and enjoy it as much today as I did then. THEY ROCK!
This performance was recorded in Hershey, PA at the Hershey Community Center by WITF-TV channel 33 (PBS station) in 1969 for their show titled "The Show". There were only a few handfuls of people watching it live.

I saw the original Grand Funk at Tampa Stadium in 1974 with Wet Willie. Mark Farner is pretty good guitar player. Saw them at the Mid Florida amphitheater in Tampa with Kid Rock but didn’t have Mark. They were definitely not the same without him.

These guys were one of those bands that the critics absolutely savaged every chance they got, but the fans ate em up. They sold out stadium after stadium during their heyday. I think they actually got even better when they added the keyboard player, Craig Frost, in 1973.
The nickel bag is a reference to pot. Notice he mentioned earlier in the song "reefer" which is pot and he said he was going to keep smoking that thing. BTW the "mature" bass player, Mel Schacher, was 19-20 years old. They sold out the old New York Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles. There is a live video of them playing at Shea Stadium and the crowd was so into the music they actually had the stadium moving.
Mel Schacher the bassist in brown played some of the meanest bass ever played in Rock & Roll. The amplifiers were built specifically to produce a fuzzy tone when a switch was thrown. Don Brewer to Drummer is the force that drives the sound. And lead man Mark Farner was the total package. He not only played guitar, harmonica, keyboards and drums on occasion, he was a preeminent front man of that period. They sold our Shea stadium. 55,000 seats in 3 days. It sold out so fast they added a second show on the next night. I took the Beatles 7 weeks to sell out the same stadium a few years before.

One of the best three man bands next to RUSH - You should also listen to them after they added Craig Frost, keyboards, in 1972 - After GFR broke up, lead singer/guitarist Mark Farner went into Christian music ~ Craig Frost joined Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band in 1980 ~ Don Brewer, one of the best singing drummers out there, started touring with Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band in 1983.

Yes, depending on kind of pot and current market value, a nickel bag (a five dollar bag) was a finger and a half or two fingers of pot in a plastic baggie and a dime bag (a ten dollar bag) was three to four fingers of pot in a plastic baggie. A Finger had to do with the width or thickness not length of a finger. And of course there was no one better to listen to back in the day than the great American band, Grand Funk Railroad. They are so young here. This is early GRAND FUNK RAILROAD, before they put out their radio hits as GRAND FUNK. I like this music much more.
Grand funk was and still is one of my favorites.Its hard to go wrong with choosing which one of their songs to try.strongly recommend The song "Nothing is the same"off of the closer to home album.In fact, everything on that album is fire 🔥

In 1971 GFR sold out shea stadium in NYC, 55,000 tickets in 72 hours. They beat the Beatles previous record.
They had many great songs a lot of them you wouldn't think it was the same band unless you knew before you heard it 👍
Great band out of my hometown of Flint, Mi. Named after Grand Trunk Railroad. A railroad that runs thru Flint.

Saw them live that very same year. They tell me I enjoyed the concert. 😋 The again at Atlanta Pop in 1970 and in Biloxi a couple of years ago. Those two concerts were amazing and I was able to remember both!!
I grew up In Michigan just north of Detroit in the 1960's. The Grand Trunk Railroad ran about half a mile from my house. The guys were great rockers and super funky. We had so much great music coming from our area back then. Loved growing up here and waiting to hear what the next amazing music that would come out.

I first seen Grand Funk Railroad live in 1974 and then another 6 times over the years. I had a chance to meet them years later. They were down to earth laughing and joking with us the fans. They are one of my all-time favorite bands. Three talented musicians that should be in the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame"
They are one of the greatest "power trios" (as we called them i.e. Jimi Hendrix experience, Cream etc.). The album this came from was a staple at most house parties in the 70s. So cool to see you both digging new music and genres.
Another Grand Funk Railroad song that you would really enjoy is "Some Kind of Wonderful". It is an upbeat, happy, romantic song.
This is one of those bands that is hard to categorize. Rock? Funk? Blues? Psychedelic? Yeah, to all. They were just GOOD.
I first heard them play this at the West Palm Beach Rock concert in November 1969…unbelievable, you girls done good… BTW on the album recording of this song they cut the reference to nickel bag and put in burlap bag
This was actually a cover. The Animals did this song in 1966! The Animals were my favorite of the British Bands.

Nickel bag was a $5 (lid) of pot. Usually sold in a sandwich bag. At Atlanta Pop in July 1970 there was a guy sitting on a police car trunk selling nickel bags out of an old feed sack as the car cruised through the crowd of 400,000. You just don't see that very often.
Saw these guys twice back in the early 70s, they filled stadiums. Incredible concerts.
I saw them in '73 and '75 and they still tour. I'm seeing them next month. This is my all time favorite GFR song. Back then a nickel was $5 worth of pot which came out to about a 1/4 oz cause it ran about $20 per ounce... yep I'm was a hippie back in the day and still am, just don't smoke weed any more. Thanks for doing this song. I have been looking forward to you two reaction to it, and I was away from home and all phone all day. I attended rock concerts from the 60's through the 80's and Grand Funk Railroad was one of the very best live bands. In my personal opinion Grand Funk Railroad was much better early as a three piece power band than later when they added their fourth member and changed the style of their music.

You do realize that Mark the guitar/vocals and Don the drummer was 21. Mel the bass player was only 18/19 - years old. that's were the energy comes from. Also they were fighting in the days to be a band that wouldn't be looked over.

@@generationgapreacts It was a very good concert. They headlined and the opening band was, as far as I know, a one hit wonder band. The band, Bloodrock, had one hit, "D.O.A."
Side note, the drummer, Don Brewer, lead singer/guitarist Mark Farner were 19 and bassist, Mel Schacher was 20 when this was made. Mom is correct that Mark had masking tape on his guitar which, I believe, was the guitar that he got at 15.

My first concert was GFR. 1970. They were Loud and Played their Asses Off.
They got a bunch of great songs. Several popular hits, but some of their deep cuts are just as good.
