      I had Canon, too slow to upgrade to mirrorless, so I chose Sony and Sony is the system I recommend to other photographers, there are so many choices of different Cameras and even more choices of E-mount Lenses, I am very happy using Sony Cameras with Sony Lenses, Zeiss Lenses and Voigtländer Lenses.

    I"m quite happy with my Canon cameras and lenses, but I'll echo what other folks have commented here: It's perfectly normal to be loyal to a particular brand, but my feeling has always been, as long as the camera you're using does the job for you, that's the only thing that matters.

    Since the launch of A7iii in 2018 and the introduction of third-party zoom lenses like Tamron 28-75, Sony has gradually become a reliable brand for working professionals in both stills and video. However, it has also become less fun to use (e.g. mediocre screen, handling, IBIS), less value-friendly (e.g. a7IV compared to a7III, expensive flagship A1 without many firmware updates), and less well-rounded (more and more product lines).

      So... if you want the widest possible choices of lens focal lengths, eg 10mm UWA, you will have to stick with Canons bigger 52mm mount.

    I was a Canon user for many years. I have now switched to Sony and have been shooting with the Sony system for a little over 2 years. A camera is a tool and won't do anything by it self so use what ever I use is never as important as who and how the photographer sees and uses the camera. The reason why I made the system change is because Canon didn't have a sensor big enough in resolution in mirrorless and I wanted to shoot with a sensor over 48MP in mirrorless where Sony had some 50 and 61MP options for me. Having said that and knowing that a camera is not the main factor on image making, knowing too that both systems have pros and cons I will say I would go back to Canon when they step up on sensor resolution for many reasons. First I will say that Canon lenses are a big factor because they have better variety, value and quality lenses leaving out third party optics that I never use with either system (Tilt and shift lenses, fish eye lenses, zooms and telephotos Canon checks all the blanks and Sony has many not checked that I love using). User friendly menus, Sony really falls short and makes migrating to their system really a hard process. Sony cameras take a long time to adapt to the photographers needs and are not intuitive like Canons are. This is something that not only I say, it is one thing Sony has been known for and have not improved. One thing that does fall very short on my high expectations is Sonys screens both through the viewfinder and on the back of the cameras, one would expect that Sony making some of the best TV in the world would have that on their side, but Sony Cameras have much better image quality than viewing quality with some times becomes a problem at the time of shooting trying to fix problems that are not there. Last but not least is brand support with the service on line and offline both: service centers, stores, web pages and other resources when solving problems, finding pieces and accessories, getting customer support, etc. If I go back to Canon I would sell all my Sony equipment. But for now I have kept both until Canon comes with a sensor big enough in mirrorless camera bodys with professional standards bodys because I shoot to print in super large formats where that matters.

    The best camera is the one you have in your hands. :) We live in a time where any of the major brands produce stellar equipment. I've shot Canon, Nikon, and I'm on Sony now. All three have been great and all three have had minor issues. It comes down to your shooting style and needs IMO. Of the three brands I still love the color of Nikon over Canon/Sony. That being said, some post work does the trick. Ergonomics, Canon or Nikon over Sony for me. The A1 is almost there but not nearly as comfortable as a Nikon/Canon. When it comes to tracking/speed/image capture... the A1 has been stellar and leaps and bounds over the previous brands/models I've owned.

  • @Eikenhorst

    Nikons Z mount is technically not completely closed off to third party lenses, but the third party options for Z mount is extremely limited, and you pay a premium vs the E-mount for the same lens. What I don't like about the E-mount is the lack of any lenses wider than 16mm that takes filters. Nikon and Canon have a 14mm that takes filters, but I feel the E-mount is just too small to build such a lens.

    At this time... if anyone still arguing which is better.. is just clueless and gear folks more than actual photographer or someone who love taking photos. Any brand makes good camera now or at least gear that can produce picture.. it is up to the user whether they know how to use a camera or which is more comfortable brand for them if that matters. Also to add... now post process is a big part of whether the final photo is nice or amazing. If you cant or not good at that.. doesnt matter Canon or sony or any brand.. photo will just be alright but not good/great.

    Brands are often about feelings. I had a 5dsr who was considered a studiocamera, but I shot everything with it. Out in the Snow -20 degrees, nights, streets..portraits. It was good for a lot of things. Thats why I went from sony a7r IV to canon r5 and their most known zooms. Leaving two a7rIVS and a lot of primes. The R5 is good, but I noticed it struggled with focus in low light. Shooting the aurora I often had to go to manual. Not an issue with sony at all. Canon are expencive, bulky and big and heavy to drag around in the wild. The Sony feels better in the hand. I like the canon but I waited for ages for them to come out with new lenses..primes..and eventually I gave up and bought into two A7rVs instead, starting to build up with primes and zooms. Its not recommended switching so much as its expencive. But now I have found the right gear for me, finally satisfied. All in all, the brand does not matter that much, both Canon and Sony are good. You just have to find out what is best for you.

    I started out with Sony mirrorless in early 2013 with my photography journey. Went to Nikon for the old school Nikon lenses and ergonomics, but left Nikon when their mirrorless AF and features lagged behind the rest. I went to Canon now with R6 and RF lenses and I'm incredibly happy. Why not Sony? I don't need a million lenses, especially third party. I prefer first party lenses for assured QC and reliability and performance. The RF35 and RFR70-200 are more than good enough for me, and for the price they are fair and I don't see a good cheap 35mm option for Sony. The RF35 is incredibly sharp, has amazing IBIS, is compact and cheap. Also, Canon has better IBIS, ergonomics, low light performance on R6, and repair customer service. Colors start to shift and contrast is lost on high ISO for A7 IV, but R6 looks incredibly well in really high ISO for hobby purposes. The Sony A7 IV would be my second choice, but I am happy with the R6 and RF lenses.
    Fuji? The build quality was terrible with the XS10 and XT30 I had and the AF is worse that point and shoots from 15 years ago. They felt like toys

    I'm a new-ish photographer and love my R6 for portraits, sports, or wildlife. Where it fails, for me, is the subject detection. When using servo AF with tracking it is always trying to hunt for subjects and won't let the focus box "stick" on whatever I initially focused on (if it isn't one of the recognized subjects). This means that I'm always having to switch to a single focus point without tracking, resulting in lost shots and more time spent composing.
    This is infuriating to the point of making me want to switch. Other brands do better (OM System, Fuji), and I'm curious to try Sony to see if the tracking works like I'd like it to.

    • @Pierretlambert
      @Pierretlambert  Před 9 měsíci

      For me it sticks well on Sony but what conditions do you usually lose the tracking in?

    • @rumrill5020
      @rumrill5020 Před 9 měsíci

      @@Pierretlambert It could be due to my beginner's reliance on tracking AF, but I'd like to be able to focus on a particular inanimate object in a landscape or in a street scene while using C-AF and have the camera hold focus while I recompose. Fuji and OM System cameras seem to do better, but my R6 will hunt all over the place no matter the subject detection mode. It also loves to expand the tracking area (even if the smallest focus box is enabled) such that I have no idea where it is focusing, especially with larger apertures.
      I should really just get better at using S-AF and moving the point around. Thanks for your videos, by the way, I quite enjoy them.

    Canon R5 needs USB-C PD cables/charger, which charges much faster. You can probably charge the Sony without PD and it takes 5-10 times longer, but still works. Most companies try to sell chargers without PD as there is obviously more money to make and it's easy to find it in the specs. Since I learned about this I have only PD in my house and my car and all my usb devices benefit.

    The issue with charging with the USB is due to the battery, not the port. Only the new battery can be USB charged while in the camera. At least that’s my experience. Oh, and you can recycle your camera batteries (not alkaline) at any Best Buy stores or local county recycling centers. Common man, it’s not hard at all.

    Let’s face it. Both systems are incredible. Nikon, too. Even Fuji is very impressive if you don’t need FF.
    For me it comes down to lens choices, prices and investments. I’ve invested in Sony lenses and, therefore, don’t change now.
    Go with whatever camera system feels good for you and is affordable for you.
    You cannot go “wrong“ these days.
    The cameras now are better than the cameras we had ten years ago in almost every aspect.
    My advice: Get a solid body, learn how to use it properly and then invest in lenses rather than camera bodies. Much more value over time. And you will be able to take full advantage of your camera. Lastly, get out there and shoot!

    I switched from Nikon mirrorless to Sony and picked up the Sony a7riv and was blown away by the images it took and love the 3rd party len options. But I second-guessed myself so I rented the Canon R5 and the 85 mm f1.2 RF lens and even though it took beautiful photos I really like the menu for the Sony and the natural colors Sony produced. I like how the feel and size of the Sony cameras even though I have size 4 XL hands I just preferred the Sony. But I wish Sony would produce an 85 mm f1.2 like the Canon lens. That is a remarkable lens. But since I upgraded to the a7rv the evf is beautiful and the flip out screen is perfect. And once you use the a7rv and the 135mm GM for portraits you will be a believer. I am not brand loyal either so whatever gets the job done the best and the easiest is what I prefer and Sony is doing it for me.

    Finally a race for performance after a decade of stalemate competition between Canon and Nikon. Both competitors, Canon and Sony, now making great gear but as a student and practitioner of marketing strategy one may expect one of these two to emerge dominant in the war for market share. Historically the winner emerges with twice the share of #2 and number two to have twice that of #3. Time will tell if this academic model proves true.
    I shoot Sony not because of better cameras but because of the huge savings from third party glass and my lenses are Sigma, Tamron and Sony G-Master but mostly Sigma and Tamron.

    I really like the Sony system and that’s after using Nikon DSLRs professionally for many years until the advent of mirrorless. I saw how great this new technology was and saw that Sony was the clear leader so went all in on Sony selling off the Nikon equipment. Fast forward a few years and I am 100% satisfied with the Sony platform. I can use best in class optics from Sony directly or choose other great lenses from Zeiss, Voigtlander, Sigma, Tamron, Samyang, etc.. I like the ergonomics, performance and ultimately the most important aspect to me is image quality and dynamic range which Sony sensors have and are rated amongst the top sensors in the world. I like the small compact size and Sony has been the most reliable system I’ve used in terms of durability with very few repairs over the years. I also really like Sony Pro Support and been happy with every interaction I’ve had with them. I often envy certain aspects of other brands but as you said it ultimately comes down to using your brain and creativity to capture amazing photos and all cameras coming out these days are great tool. Thanks for the insights, I’ve been wondering what your thoughts were regarding the Canon since you recently received it. Always enjoy your enthusiasm and videos, keep up the great work!

      well nikon are using sony sensors...even back from days of d3, d750 or such...gues where that dynamic range came from, sony sensor ofc :)
      Golden rule was for years:
      -canon for colors, but a bit softer (own sensors)
      -nikon for sharpness and dynamic range (sony sensors)
      Remember year when first A7 came out..pro guys laughed so much (its a toy, small lens, bla bla) but sony destroying it with dynamic range, low iso etc...and look 10 years later everyone copy them!

    I've been using the Nikon D3200 for almost a decade and in 2023, still don't have any problem with the image quality. but Nikon doesn't care about budget lenses for amateurs and hobby photographers and also I need to Invest in a system to support my vlogging and astrophotography activities at a good level for the price. Sony is amazing in these roles but still a little expensive for me, but Canon is not compatible with third-party optics. so I guess Sony is a reasonable choice for me, because I need to buy just 2 bodies and optics are more important when it comes to price.
    Thank you for these details bro! ♥
