  • It was the summer of 1863.
The American Civil War was in full swing.
The Confederacy needed a victory, badly.
The divided American nation was at a crossroad, a crossroad called Gettysburg.

Love the content obviously, I just wanted to say my piece as to why the attack by Stuart on the third day would occur. Stuart, who as you had mentioned previously, who was successful in his endeavours of sabotage and harassing, would move to the rear and strike the union cavalry not to mount a rear attack against infantry and support the third days assault in that way, rather, by looking at the terrain, one can see that east cavalry field where Stuart would combat the union cavalry was too far behind the lines for a supporting action for the express purpose of helping the charge. Yes, a supporting action, delaying action, a distraction, but not in direct support of the assault on cemetery hill.

Secondly, the artillery assault of the confederates wasn’t ideal of course. A 2 1/2 hour barrage should have caused more havoc one might suspect. However, to say it was inaccurate I think takes away from the stories of people like Alonso Cushing who had 6 cannon at the beginning of the barrage but by the end merely had 2 due to confederate fire. He would win the medal of honour and would die defending his cannons from the confederate assault. Cushing was at stationed at the exact point Lee would direct the assault towards.
