A great body of works worth to study, for portraiture, are the series of portraits from Franz Xaver Mesershmit. They are all based on his studies of extreme face expressions of people that ware declared mad, crazy and that ware placed in institutions as such. In his portraits you will often see the most extreme facial positions and that can serve as reference of one end of the spectrum of expression.
