  • For years I have been singing the praises of the Mountain Ultra line of tents from Teton Sports.
    The 1 person and 2 person versions of the tent are excellent for the money - top notch quality, excellent value, low price and an unmatched warranty.
    Now it is time to take a look at the largest version which is a 4 person monster.
    Together let's look at the tent, go over the features, check on the quality and see what we like and don’t like as far as the design goes.

    I bought this on May 21, 2024 through Amazon for 214.99. We just used it on a 50F no-wind overnighter, and it was fabulous. Straight-forward setup, quality construction, worked great. No condensation. Tons of room for the two of us.
    Ours came with only 3 of 4 guy lines and no ground cloth - although there was an empty stuff sack for one. We bought a REDCAMP Waterproof Camping Tent Tarp - 71"x83" before we went and it was awesome. Truly waterproof and well sewn.
    Thanks for the great video!

    I've had the Teton Mountain Ultra 4 tent for, this is the third year. I love this tent. Never had any issues or leaking problems. Comfortable, with great ventilation for 3 seasons. Highly recommend it.

    I own two Teton Sports cots, with easy assembly arms, and two sleeping pads for each. Very high quality. The lever-arm cot is very nice. At my age 76, I cannot imagine having to fight a cot without this fantastic device. The sleeping pad is very well made and looks great as well. They are a great company who put thought and quality in their products. I just recently snagged a North Face Stormbreak 2 tent at a bargain price for bikepacking but have yet to use it. I will let you know how that goes. I have the North Face Wawona 8 and love it.

    Luke recommended this tent to me awhile back. Finally used it last November thru January. I was working out of town so I decided to camp 4 days a week for 2 plus months. I was in an actual campground with electricity for comfort.
    For extra winter comfort, I had an electric heater and a cot inside. Cot was tight but fit. I put a movers blanket over the tent, under the fly to help hold the heat in. Only on the really cold 30 degree night is when I got condensation. Barely any at all.
    The real test was when 2 storms came in back to back. Fun times lol! I woke up to the tent folded on me from sideways winds. It survived. The second storm was even stronger. I tied it off better and the tent held up completely without any damage! The only issue was the sideways rain coming in under the fly even I tied it off as close to the ground as possible. The rain could have came through the top vent holes like Luke mentioned. Winds were every bit of 30 to 40 mph. It was a test for sure!!
    Regular rain and breezes, this 4 person tent held up great.
    Thanks for recommending this tent!!

    Left my Teton one person tent setup in the back yard, and a heavy overnight snow flattened it. When I removed the snow there was no real damage, it stood up just fine. That was three years ago, and I still use it...: )

    Besides the weird positioning of the vents, the only other negative I have for this tent so far is that the rainfly zipper tends to get caught on the rainflap if you don't use a finger to block it when you're opening and closing the rainfly. I think it probably has something to do with the material Teton uses, but it's a minor annoyance. Other than that, the "4-person" size is perfect for a long camping weekend for two people. Plenty of room for a couple of cots or sleeping pads and your stuff.

    • @cobbler88
      @cobbler88 Před 17 dny

      Same with the 2P. AND the door zippers can be tough around that sharper corner if you're trying to reach over to use them, rather than being positioned behind them more.

      It IS worth noting that, when I did my research, the orange/yellow color does apparently really irritate flies and mosquitoes.
      I tend to agree that it's cool to blend in, but growing up in the 70s, we still had people summiting peaks for the first time, and even Everest was something pretty heroic. The number of North Face tents of this orange/yellow color on those expeditions kind of makes up for that part of my brain that wants me to blend in. I can still feel like an adventurer with orange/yellow.
      That Marmot stuff, though? Miss with with those Cotopaxi color schemes. :)

    Teton Mountain Ultra 3-season series of tents are well-proven, well-thought-out, very high value to cost tents. In this series of tents, the simplicity, overall materials selections, plus attention to detail with good Q/C... is all there. Company also stands by their products with good customer service. Here at Alaska Raft Connection, I have the 3-person version of this tent. I have done a few customization modifications to it for outfitting in a gear rental application. I wager Luke will find this tent to be rainproof for his testing, reasonably/seasonably comfortable and 3-season stormworthy.

  • @heidih2887
    @heidih2887 Před 3 měsíci +3

    I'd think there's a large market for a tent like this... family camps, fishing camps, car/overland, and as you said, the pieces could be shared among the group to lighten loads if hiking/backpacking in to the camp. Those important features we love on good backpacking tents transferred over to "camping". :D As you have pointed out through many revues, many/most budget-friendly 4 person tents are not actually designed to handle significant weather events, and/or quality control is such that one might be semi-OK, another identical tent from the same shelf in the store might be a complete disaster with missing or damaged components etc. HOORAY for quality products that many individuals, families and organizations could afford and have a comfortable, dependable shelter!

    I'd just like to say, as a color blind person, color is very important to me in camping products. I do want earthy tones that will blend into a terrain without looking like camo or "tactical". I know you show the colors as you talk about them and some people are probably super bothered by this but I super appreciate it.

      One thing to note. When I was shopping for this one, I was afraid to get the yellow/orange one becauase I thought it would attract bugs. I mean, bees, right? Turns out that two insects that do NOT like this color happen to be flies and mosquitoes. It was an easy choice at that point.

      The 2P worked great for me in adverse conditions in the Rockies a couple of weeks ago. After hours in the rain (and it rained every night), I woke to find that my tent area was actually almost entirely inside of a large puddle that had formed beneath me. I unstaked, dragged the footprint then the tent over about 12', staked back down. There wasn't a single drop of water inside the tent that didn't drip off of me, and most of the floor had to have been immersed for quite awhile. There are a few weak points, but nothing huge.

      To be fair, REI does not set the prices for the non-REI products. Whether it arrives at REI or your local mom and pop outfitter, that Osprey Atmos 65 comes with the company's price tag on it.

    • @jyo8914
      @jyo8914 Před 17 dny

      @@cobbler88 REI does have the ability to sell any item at a price below MSRP, just like many other retailers. I bought a Camp Chef fire pit (new model too) which was close to 50% off. And look at their annual sales. Steep discounts on a lot of items. I would feel better about buying things there if they had regular gear at lower prices. In this day, it's too easy to find things online for a discount. Doesn't make sense to throw money away.

    • @cobbler88
      @cobbler88 Před 17 dny

      @@jyo8914 But those are not made in a vacuum. REI can't just drop prices on their own. Otherwise, retailers could just dump product just above wholesale to keep their doors open while their suppliers go out of business. There need to be deals worked out with manufacturers in order to do that.

    The tent looks great. I will be honest in saying I don’t have one, but I do have tent stakes like the ones provided, those fold up like a sheet of paper in my area. If camping in soft ground, this looks to be great! If you live in hard or rocky ground, invest in proper tent stakes.

    • @cobbler88
      @cobbler88 Před 17 dny

      Then again, if it' rocky enough, you can just use big rocks to stake down. I was in the Rockies a few weeks ago. The ground is soft for about 1". After that, it's a series of small, round rocks that you're just not going to be able to defeat. The bigger rocks really helped.
      Regardless, I do always swap out with Groundhogs. Those shepherd's hooks aren't bad for holding the tent in place in the wind until you can stake it down properly, though.

    Nice looking' car camping tent!
    I know exactly what you mean about the top-side vents. I have them on my beloved 15 yr old REI half dome (2 person). If there is a hard driving sideways rain & they are open, I get wet; although, fine, if closed. I have learned to work with that & have gotten a little wet a few times reaching out from a doorway to quickly close them up.
    I think this Teton Ultra 4 could serve me well as a roomy 1 person car camping tent . I like the the 2 mini rainfly vestibules at both doors for gear, that shouldn't go in tent. All that mesh is great for our hot Texas nights, with the protection of a FULL rainfly - love it!

    Regarding colors, it IS worth noting that, when I did my research, the orange/yellow color does apparently really irritate flies and mosquitoes. That made it a no-brainer for me. Plus, as much as one side of my brain wants to blend, the other side remembers growing up in the 70s when people were still summiting peaks for the first time, and even Everest was still a pretty big deal. The sight of all of those North Face orange/yellow tents on those expeditions makes the explorer side of my brain veto the blend-in side.
    That Marmot stuff, though? I was considering one of their Tungsten 2P tents when I purchased my 2P version of the Teton Mountain Ultra. Miss with with those Cotopaxi color schemes. :)

    Enjoyed the video. I have a few Teton products and they seem very decent. Question: Did you ever do Part 4 of the Coleman Sundome 2? Part 1 was an overview, Part 2 was a before you buy, Part 3 was the rain test, and it did well in the rain test, after which you said you'd try it out for a few months and then make a video with your Final Thoughts. I don't think the Final Thoughts video ever came out. Cheap-but-serviceable tents like the Sundome 2 are important gateway tents, they're also important for people that want to do a little fair weather camping a few times a year and don't want to spend $1K on gear. I think they have their place. I know people look down on Coleman tents, but those "walmart tier" tents have probably gotten more people outdoors than any others, and I was very impressed that the Sundome 2 survived your rain test better than a number of other more expensive tents you've tested.

    The fly and the tub are the main parts that differentiate a good tent from a bad one. The only way to tell is if it keeps you dry in a rain storm. Most don't. This one looks decent but needs a better larger outside to inner tent entry area. Tub waterproofing is unknown.

      I took my 2P version of this into the Rockies two weeks ago. It rained every day. The first day, I woke late in the afternoon to find that my tent was now almost entirely within a large puddle that had formed under me. I unstaked, dragged it 12' and restaked. The floor must have been immersed for awhile in water. There wasn't a single drop inside the tent that didn't drip off of me during the moving process. And when I hosed it all down days later, I didn't see any damage to the floor, which had been dragged from the water over needles, stones, etc.
      For me, the floor was solid.

    I flip Luke some sh!t when I think it's appropriate, but I took the recommendation regarding the 1P version of this tent, and he's been dead nuts on regarding how good this line of products is.
    I took the 2P version to dispersed camping near Leadville, Colo., a couple of weeks ago when i ran in the 10k race there. It set up fine. Nothing special. But it rained every day I was there for hours on end, and by early evening of that first night, what I'd thought was simple a flat area that had been matted down by previous tents ended up being a small flood area. My tent was almost entirely within a small, light tan pond that had appeared. I got out, unstaked everything, took out my Jackery and anything heavy, dragged the entire thing about 12 feet over needles, rocks, etc. (first the footprint, then the tent itself) and restaked everything down.
    Neither location was easy to stake, as the ground there is only soft for about 1" until you hit the multitude of small rocks always just beneath the surface, but there were larger rocks to help secure all stakes. I always replace the factory stakes with Groundhogs unless they come with decent stakes of similar design, or V stakes.
    I went inside to check out the damage, and not a single drop of water sat on the floor of that tent. I figured even with everything done perfectly, some water would have gotten inside, but it was dry other than any water I tracked in myself.When I hosed the tent down upon my return, I didn't see any damage to the floor. The gear loft worked fine. Of course, I don't really use it for gear. At night, I would put my tablet up in the gear loft, a USB speaker next to my head, and watch movies I'd "downloaded" from NF, MAX, etc. With temps dipping into the high 30s at night, I obviously slept with all of my tech (except the Jackery) inside my Corinthia sleeping bag, which is another gem Luke recommended.
    Most of the cons are related to the zippers and the weather i experienced. The door zippers can be tough to work when you get to that rounded corner on the right. It's a little sharp if you try to reach across to it rather than if you're sitting behind it, and it can be tough to raise/lower the fly zippers from the inside without them catching, especially once the fly is wet. Also when wet, the velcro that helps close the zipper flap on the outside of the fly doesn't work as well, but it worked well enough. There MAY be one spot on the fly that was wetting out. It was noticeably a different shade when the tent was wet, but I didn't notice any water actually enter inside of that roughly 3"x4" patch. I'm not really sure that the vents along the doors are really that usuable most of the time. There were a couple of superfluous threads.
    As an aside, I originally thought about getting the grey/white one, but instead got the orange/yellow one. I did some research and while I'd thought that might be more attractive to bugs (I mean, bees, right?), it turns out that the bugs that do NOT like that color happen to be flies and mosquitoes, so the choice was simple.
    Faithful and true.
    Booty duty first.

    I bought a marmot tent. Great except all the sealed seams literally flaked off after used 2 times. Flooded totally. I believe it happened because I stored the tent in garage in Florida. Lesson, sealed seams melt and crack in high Temps and humidity. Marmot replaced it but they could not replace my lost camping trip

    My pet peave concering all outdoor gear, with the exception of stuff from Kelty, is the too small stuff sacks that makers supply. Sure, you can get the gear back in it if you're working in a controlled environment like the mfg's are. But in the outdoors, on the ground, maybe in the wind and/or rain, they're too small. Kelty adds a couple extra inches in all dimensions so you can easily get the tent, tarp, etc., put back in its storage bag.

    Nice initial review on a rather large tent, Luke. I can’t comment on this co.’s products as I don’t own anything they make yet, but I have heard many good things with regard to both their tents and sleeping bags. I would say that this tent is a decent tent for over landing/glamping due to the size alone, (it seems 3 people and gear could Easily fit in this tent). However there are two main aspects to this tent that are drawbacks Imo, one you mentioned and one was not. The first negative you mentioned, namely the vent placement, is a letdown. too often I have seen the vents placed too high on tents such as these that leak when it rains.(The issue is wind blown rain that will easily get in due to the vent being so high on the tent that the wind will blow the vent open a bit even if you close them). A better vent system angles the vents lower on the side of the tent fly to allow the vent to open facing the ground so that you can keep it open when it rains and not have it leak, but we will have to see the rain test to confirm this.
    The second point of issue not mentioned is the tent floor. Although it is seam taped,(a good thing), it is made out of polyester which is not as strong as other materials that should have been used in a tent this size. With three people and gear in this tent the floor is undoubtedly going to see some serious abuse, let alone kids and pets,(or unwanted fury guests which you can’t account for). I would have went a different way on the floor material for this reason.
    As for the color selection I think they are appropriate. For this type of camper/glamper, it is about fun colors and visibility. Although my preference would be subdued colors, (just like your stated preference of a olive/dark green, coyote brown, or black). However these colors fit this type of camping. For preppers, stealth camping, or emergency purposes this tent would be too big, heavy, and visible size-wise alone to use, so subdued colors won’t make much difference to avoid being “seen” . But it would be nice for those who prefer those colors.
    All in all though, this seems like a decent glamping tent that will be comfortable airflow wise that offers a lot of room for a decent price. Hopefully it will pass the rain test, but for fair weather use it should be fine. See you in the next vid, Luke.
