This is like looking at the wooden beams in a Victorian house- the original building blocks. Thank you for posting.

The fuck???? I’ve never heard this? How? So beautiful. God… I wish Elliott is still alive. I truly hope that wherever he is now is treating him well.

I see some Beatles shining through. Just a bit.

There had to be some George Harrison/Jeff Lynne inspiration

I'm a bit torn because I like this arrangement more, but I like the lyrics of the official version more.

if this version had the "shine on me baby.." it would be the perfect song. for now I'll have to settle with listening to both versions back to back haha

@@visage161 That part strikes me as a first draft he wasn’t done working on. The lyrics on the Basement version are so sharp, but that part is just that one line repeated. It not being in this version makes me think he added it later.

Are you sure this is from Grand Mal? For what I know this song hadn't been written yet, then: instead, it sounds like the 7'' version, recorded during the McConnell sessions.

Grand Mal refers to the rarities, not to be confused with the actual Grand Mal sessions

@@TenInAMillion as far as I can tell, yes. I have the Pretty (Ugly Before) 7", and it includes this version.

@@TenInAMillion[EDIT: Sorry, TenInAMil, I hadn't realized your question was answered, all the replies weren't displaying!] Yes, this is the final recording released during E.S.'s lifetime on a 7" b-side, the A-Side being "Pretty (Ugly Before)". Something I've always wanted to know, since I could never find a copy, is if the mix of "Pretty" is any different from the album...I would have to assume it must be, on some level, being that this was the last material for Rob Schnapf got his hands on all the recordings and remixed everything, rather controversially in some cases

@@gtapku1643 Wow, I somehow missed your reply comment when I first posted...so you own the single?? That's great! I don't know if you are enough of an audio nerd to notice, but do you happen to notice any difference in the mix of "Pretty", as compared to "Basement"? Since Schnapf remixed the rest, with McConnell claiming he heavily sanitized material like "Shooting Star", "Coast to Coast", etc, I always figured it must be at least slightly altered...unless he left it untouched since it was considered 'done'??
