- When Allied forces in the Pacific took the fight to the Empire of Japan, the United States Marine Corps would be the tip of the spear in battle after battle. Tough, well-trained and dependable, Marines fought both a determined enemy and unimaginable conditions to seize victory on island after island on their way to victory. READ MORE:

If you're looking for another USMC painting guide which uses purely Citadel colours, there's a classic here from the late Andy Zeck: www.warlordgames.com/usmc-spe... Even after years of painting, Andy's style influenced how I get my models on the table as quickly as possible, so it's well worth checking out how others might approach the same subject! Andy's are a lot more green than mine turn out, but you might like how that looks.
A few odd technical glitches featured in the audio of today's recording, so there are some odd cuts and jumps in this one. My apologies for some of the stilted nature of the outcome here, but I think it still works pretty well!

Probably the best video I have seen yet on painting a WWII US Marine. Well done. 👍
THis was very helpful! I had wondered what colors to use when painting U.S.M.C. models so this gives me a start. Thanks for sharing this.
I have been working on some WW2 airborne troops, and this has been a huge help. Thank you
Great video. Much appreciated. I've used your video on IJA and this one to paint up my Bolt Action Island Assault starter kit.
USMC is my main Bolt Action army! I am beyond thrilled to see this video! I love it!
I copied your instructions as best I could with what I had available. It is probably the best mini I have painted. Thank you!
Thanks for the video! I am very nervous about painting my marines but it does not have to be difficult!
My Island Assault set is on its way to me and your guides will be super helpful. Can't wait to get started.
Awesome choice!
Superb! And thanks for clarifying the green grey/Grey green numbers. That helps a lot!
There are some extremely peculiar translations in the Vallejo range, so I'm glad they include those number codes as well!
With the new Pacific starter set for bolt action coming soon , I can see this vid having a whole load more hits pretty soon .
Precisely why I’m here :D
Lovely stuff!
It always makes my day when you upload a new vid.
Glad to hear it, bud! :D
Semper Fi! Great interpretation and bringing them to life!
Good night Chesty?!!! You are awesome! We would say that every night before going to sleep in boot camp! That brought some good memories!
I'd wondered who would stay right to the end for that one. ;D
Love the helmet colour's very nicely painted Marine, Keep up the Good work my friend.
Many thanks! I'll certainly try. ;D
What a great looking marine.such a easy and quick painting uniform effect on this miniature.......🙂👍
Those pre-shade drybrushes will save a lot of time once you've got your eye in with how much to apply!
You've read my mind again! I asked for a box of these guys for Christmas so I can make them as a sort of tribute for my dad's friend who passed away, who was an incredibly proud Marine. Your timing is impeccable yet again. Can't wait to see more Bolt Action content.
They're an excellent boxed kit. I'm really pleased I finally picked some up. All the best to you and your dad for the Christmas season!
Starting a USMC army this video is epic, keep them coming please! Could you do a video about weathering pencils on tanks ect?
Popping in 2 years later, using this video to paint my marines. Happy to announce they changed 70971 to LIGHT green grey now!
Pretty good overall Mate! However, I would note that the chinstraps on his helmet are webbing, similar to the other web items, rather than leather. The only leather on the M1 helmet was the **Helmet LINER** chinstrap going over the brim, although these degraded fast in the South Pacific and weren't bothered about replacing.
The Thompson, and really all US long guns, featured a blackened metal buttplate on the rear of the stock to keep it from being damaged. And I'll throw this last one in as a related tidbit and not critic: the Marine's Dog Tags were suspended from a white or light olive cotton cord, rather than a metal chain we see often depicted with US Army troops.
just wow!
Nothing a wee bit of drybrushing won't achieve! ;D
This one looks truely awesome, especially the camouflage!
The base though... at least it creates good contrast to the model ;)
*Semper Fi!*
Hey, I like the base! ;D Though I can understand it being a little bit 'Marmite' - not everyone likes the old-style clump stuff!
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio Yeah, looks a bit 'liverwurst' (which I actually like a lot).
It's just that the model looks *gorgeous and realistic* and the base is a bit...
...cheap, like plastic. The contrast is eye-catching, you know.
Cool vid thanks
Great vid, except they must have changed the tone of GreenGrey 886 to amuch lighter shade. I thought the use of Green Grey was a great idea, except after applying it and watching this vid again your shade is straight up Oliive Drab .887. Green Grey .971 is now called Light Green Grey and is a perfect match up, though.
Just a polite observation for everyone's benefit. :)
FINALLY!!!!
Nice, just got me a box of these.
They're a really awesome box, honestly. Probably one of my favourite Bolt Action infantry kits out there at the moment.
Cool video! I have some Viet Nam Marines that have been in my to do list like forever. May just prod me to do them!
Cool bro also next maybe do a 40k ultra marine dreadnaught
Ti's a good video.
Glad you think so!
Now you need one with a crayon pack on his web belt. Nice job!
He already ate that!
Wow as usual, could you do a tutorial on German SS pea dot camo plz.
Thank you , Sonic .
Very good one! I keep it into my US Soldier playlist for later.
Juste a question: how did you do the mud/ground of the base?
Greetings from France!
Just Stirland Battlemire from GW drybrushed with a little brown! Nice and simple. :)
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio Thanks a lot, I just found your video about basing with citadel products! Very useful for a beginner like me ;)
@@clemlaflem1 You can say about Citadel colors what you want, but their 'Technical' series is really great. I can't live without 'Agrellan Earth' anymore. Fast, simpel method with astonishing results!
either the colors are off or my 886 green grey is a lighter batch. I am going to try RUssian uniform for the darker green. My 886 green grey looks like your highlight color and then green grey for the highlight
How I paint usmc amtank next?
Great tutorial. Is that Vallejo flat varnish spray any good? How is it compared to Dull Coat? Thanks.
I really like it. I've not had any issues with the spray and it's a nice, flat matt effect when it's dried. I've never used Dullcote so I can't really compare directly, I'm afraid!
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio sounds good to me. Dull coat has been getting very hard to get so I’ve been looking for an alternative. Thanks for the reply.
Thx for a great video. Most likely a noob question but using the Shade (Citadel Agrax Earthshade) makes my marines look like they've done mud wrestling. And I can clearly see yours aren't, any advice for what I'm doing wrong and tips going forward (think I emulate the amount of shade from the video)
thx in advance!
Short answer is they changed the formula since this was recorded, and now it's much gloopier and heavier than I was using. Easiest fix is to mix up another pot which is half Agrax, half Lahmian Medium. It'll give you way more control over how the shade settles and won't dry as dark, but keeps the shading effect.
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio thought it was just me :) Thx will do just that! Many thanks
is there an Army Painter Green Gray-70.971 equivalent?
Great mini. A question, which airbrush would you advise for priming ?
Dunno! I'm afraid I can't help you there - I just don't use one.
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio thanks mate, I'll ask around
one of those paints were Grey Green and not Green Grey I would swear by that.
Is that Model Color Leather Brown (70.871) or Game Color Leather Brown (72.040)? Also...come on Vallejo, is naming that hard?!? :)
All of these are the Model Color line. :)
IS THEIR A CONTRATS TUTTORAIL ON THE US MARINES?
Can white be used in of grey for primer? that I got for the us army contrast painting.
You could give it a shot. It'll probably come out slightly lighter, but there's nothing wrong in that.
Thanks
Any chance of an early war usmc tutorial please?
It'd look much like this. The only real difference would be the helmet covers would be the same green grey as the uniform, although camo covers were introduced fairly quickly.
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio I always thought the early uniforms were more of a sea green kind of colour... I was thinking of knocking up some using GW Contrast and using Akhelion Green for the Uniform???
I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong, but after I put the agrax earth shade on the mini looks like hot garbage. Think I’m going too heavy maybe. Tips?
Without seeing it, 'hot garbage' doesn't tell me much about the problem you're having. 😅 One likely culprit is that since this video was made, GW changed the formula on all their Shade line. Yaaay... Best thing you can do is mix the new Agrax 1:1 with Lahmian Medium. It'll flow and behave much more like the old stuff, and give you a slightly more subtle shading effect; it's harder to overdo it.
I’ll give that a try!
I cant find what was the color used on webbing, pouches and gaiters?
German Camo Beige. ;D Take a peek in the description, everything's listed in there for reference.
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio Your videos a great I really enjoy them and use them as the basis for a lot of my miniature painting. One thing I would find helpful in the description is something like: Base Flesh - Beige Red - #804, etc. etc. etc.
DID YOU THIN THE PAINT WITH WATER OR IS THAT STRIGHT OUT THE BOTTLE.?
can anyone help me, im getting better with my painting but when i use washes they always dry looking too dark and more like they are dipped in dirt. Rather than shaded like the videos i see. Any tips?
The only thing I can suggest without seeing what you're doing would be that you might just be applying too much. Try a little less at a time, and see if that improves any. Don't forget to shake the pot silly before you use it, too!
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio thanks for reply. I dont put anymore on than in the videos i have watched though admittedly i may not shake enough. Il try that!
Tiberium exposure detected...
Now that takes me back some!
