  • On this video we look at what difference a telescopic antenna makes to the President Randy 3 CB radio next to the stock rubber duck antenna, we also test both of these against a classic radio from the early 80s the TRC 1001.

    Bit of trivia: The reason they made the 3 watt Walkie-Talkie as well as the 5 watt is because here in the States you did not need a license if you were 3 watts or less. Back in the day, Citizen Band had a few designated channels, not just channel 9. There were a few mobile to base and a few mobile to mobile. Channel 16 was reserved for SSB. Channel 14 had a 3 watt limit and was reserved for walkie-talkie use. This would allow people to use low power radios without getting stomped on by full power units; not to mention they had short range anyway due to no ground plane. You could use a mobile or base in the case you were contacting a walkie-talkie. Such as on a camping trip and the kids are off on little excursions, you could call them in for lunch, call for help or what have you with your mobile unit. I have a couple of these big tanks and a 2 watt version as well. Good fun growing up having them when roaming the 'hood on our bikes.

    Finally someone giving a Real test instead of just holding the radio in their hand an holding it up to the camera talking about BS that we already know! Thank you!!!

    Great to watch, and it's amazing how much the radio size has shrunk over the intervening 40 years. I imagine that there is nothing that Paul can service inside the Randy as presumably all of the set-up control is stored in flash memory and applied from integrated DACs.

    Good review.be for I just seen this video I ordered 3-of these Antenna’s of eBay £10 each Amazon want £15- each. And I’m just going to order a TMC to BNC adapter.next week are order the radio.shame it never side-bands. It is a good radio. There’s another CZcams video ware this radio give 3-watts one way and 4-watts another way to do with the antenna. The antenna on top the radio give 3-watt then using the antenna adapter clipped on the bottom of this radio it gives 4-watts. It’s some sort of safety thing as it said on another CZcams clip I will watch it again he even takes it to bits he knows his stuff.

    try with a 102"" whip antenna mobile. With shorted antennas the real watts droped a lot ... if the equipment is 3W , with shorted antenna only out 0.3W in the best of cases.

    You said you were going to make a support piece where it hooks to the bnc connector with your 3d printer. Is it a bit wobbly connection? I noticed mine is too

    Should/could have measured the exact output of both radios... The Randy normally only puts out around 3 watts on battery but can be adjusted to 5 AFAIK... Touching the bottom of the antenna on the Randy may have helped to act as a ground plane... Randy has other adjustments that can improve performance, none were attempted here...

    The aerial on the trc will not b as good as the telescopic used on the randy so cant really compare against each other the main thing is the difference the telescopic makes to the randy
    Ive got the midland alan 42 ds and the albrecht ae 2990 afs now since getting them ive not really used them as my health is very poor but im going to have a crack this week
    I believe the midland is ok
    And ive had good reports about the albrecht which also has ssb but only 4 watts i ll try rubber ducks on both .telescopic also ill try t2lt thunderbolt ssd58 plus get my lad to chuck it up conifer will b intresting what i get oñ. The albrecht on ssb so should b intresting

      The albrecht is only 4 watts sideband but well see how it goes ill try both on telescopic and the cracking t2lt thunderbolt ssd58plus
      Ive heard good reports on the albrecht so well see

      Yes all CB handhelds are expensive imo, bit the difference in quality and what you get between this and the others below it for a bit extra is considerable, go to a vendor who stocks both and you will see what I mean.

    • @indiana146
      @indiana146 Před 2 lety +1

      @@knoxieman the randy looks quality build.it came out at begining of this year i got mine last year but i think the randy probably better than the midland 42 ds but as for better.than the albrecht on cb i dont know the albrecht has ssb and a quick mod can b used on amateur
      Im just learning again since 80.s so its a big learning curve
      I dont get out a lot cos of my health i dont smoke or drink so ive a few quid put to one side for when i do foundation but im going to do both cb and ham
      My daughter bought mw ss9900 which is a cracking rig but my.pal said the 6900 is easier to learn on whats your view on that getting back to the randy it looks quality made radio cheerrs

    • @indiana146
      @indiana146 Před 2 lety

      £189 @ knights its cheaper than i paid for my albrecht £250 but albrecht has am fm ssb and amateur still only 4 watts but ive had good reports on it you can run it through your home base etc
      Id say from what ive seen none of these radios are much good on rubber duck aerials which are better used stirring your tea
      Knoxie made a point like with a lot of hand helds like my midland 42ds for another £59 i could have got the randy but it didnt come out till start of this year
      Also you cut your coat according to your cloth
      I dont smoke or drink cos of my meds i had to give up my hobbies metal detecting and watching blackburn rovers cos of my health
      To b honest my health has improved since i stopped watching rovers lol
      So cash i spent on those hobbies ive got for radio
      Footy id spend £50 every 2 weeks not cheap plus mental stress of watching black burn
      Point is £189 is a lot of cash but like knoxie says to design produce and market a radio aint cheap
      I just need to get a bit better im giving both radios a go this week first time since i got them last yr thats way it is my health is that poor but i will get there
      Do you have a handheld
      Can get bargains on ebay but better if you can get knew take care

    i hope you dont mind me saying this but,the prize you payed for this randy handheld you was better of with the albrecht ae 2990 it had ssb on it also and it is the same prize,also easy to mod to 400 channels

      With the 2990 Don't get large display, external antenna power adapter, 2 yr warranty, lipo battery, not interested in SSB or 400 channels, the Randy is a great jack of all trades, very well made and still has a years warranty left and works great for me that's why I bought it. 👍
