I can see what people might be confused, since Daffy and Sylvester both speak with lisps. The funny thing is that most people think of Daffy when they hear a lisp, and yet Sylvester's is stronger.
The only thing that would’ve made this funnier would be if Mel showed up in person, was seen wandering around the stage, and then saying out loud, “Aw, man. I knew I shoulda taken a left toin at Albakirky!” This clip never gets old!
I remember on "Finders Keepers" (UK kids' game show) one of the questions was "Who says Yabba-Dabba-Doo?" One of the options on the board was Yogi Bear and they picked that and were declared right! Sadly, neither Fred Flintstone nor Yogi Bear 'phoned in to correct them.
Indeed. I remember an episode of Jeopardy where they said that Zilpah was the mother of Joseph in the book of Genesis, but his mother was actually Rachel. I also seem to recall an episode where they called former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman a Democrat, but she was actually a Republican.
“Speedy Gonzales” sounded a bit like Blanc was still in character as Sylvester at first. And Porky honestly sounded more like Bugs… But hey, Mel Blanc was real old at the time, and this was a real treat he didn’t have to set up and do for us.
No, the person who researched the question used a page from a book that had the Daffy Duck answer in there. I wrote to the show after this incident, and producer Bill Mitchell replied that the researcher was fired. Mitchell sent me a copy of the page with the incorrect answer.
Do you have the clip where Peter throws a stuffed animal through the board, I remember on that episode the board had eyes between the words "Press" and "Your" and an hand was reaching out of the "Your" and "Luck" Update, found the episode...czcams.com/video/0m9zB7VTRfw/video.html&t
So….can somebody explain exactly what went down after the question round? Did someone yell “Stop tape!”? And how did Mel Blanc get summoned for this? As somebody who thought he had seen all the great and funny game show moments, I had never seen this until today (Feb 14, 2023) when BUZZR showed this ep. Any help would be appreciated!
These game shows were recorded in advance and the end tag with Me! was probably recorded later. Rather or not it was before the original CBS broadcast it's an different story. Mel probably found out about the goof and asked to call them to correct Peter.
I have wondered the same thing. The only thing that I can think of is that the show’s producers might have second guessed themselves regarding the accuracy of the “Sufferin’ Succotash” question. Perhaps they contacted the Warner Bros. office for verification, as Warner Bros. was the distributor for Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies.
For the record, Sylvester WAS first to use that phrase in his debut in 1945. Daffy used that phrase in 1946.
Sufferin' succotash epic way to correct a gameshow host! Love you Mel Blanc!
Technically, both Sylvester and Daffy would be acceptable answers, since Daffy has used the phrase over the years as well. Just not as often as Sly.
I can see what people might be confused, since Daffy and Sylvester both speak with lisps. The funny thing is that most people think of Daffy when they hear a lisp, and yet Sylvester's is stronger.
Mel Blanc gave Sylvester and Daffy essentially the same voice, only Daffy's was sped up during the recording process.
+Charlie Guenette Yes, I knew that. Other than the lisp, Sylvester was the closest to Mel Blanc's normal voice.
No Daffy is a Jew and Sylvester is a Gentile that explains why Daffy loves money so much.
Sylvester was better known for the phrase then Daffy. Even though he to said it.
"Peter Tomarken you're diss-picable!" Daffy Duck would've say that on the phone.
Wonder why Mel didn't think of that.
And he stuttered like Porky!
Daffy would say that to Peter Tomarken.
That's all folks! This is Mel Blanc speaking for Press Your Luck, a Carruthers Company presentation!
"Stay tuned for The Price is Right under most of these CBS stations.".
Mel Blanc was a amazing sport. Peter Tomarken and the looney tunes gang was funny.
The only thing that would’ve made this funnier would be if Mel showed up in person, was seen wandering around the stage, and then saying out loud, “Aw, man. I knew I shoulda taken a left toin at Albakirky!” This clip never gets old!
Spelled it wrong. It's Albuquerque.
@@Rlotpir1972 Yeah, but Albakirky is how Bugs pronounced it.
I remember seeing this when it first aired on CBS! All 3 contestants answered correctly, but none of them got credit due to that mix-up.
The judge should get the 'buzzer' for being stupid.
Hope the room raid riddles were better that day. ;)
On another note, gotta love the closeup of the "Superhero" Whammy and Taunting Whammy slides on this episode.
That board must've been HUGE!
Impressive!
They don’t call it the big board for nothing.
Which do you think was bigger/taller?? *"Press Your Luck's"* game board, or *"The $25,000 Pyramid?"*
You're Despicable Peter! That's The Funniest Question Round I Have Watched. (6/14/85)
*Peter Tomarken is overruled*
Well, the good news is...Press Your Luck actually acknowledges their mistakes. Unlike Jeopardy
At 1:03 you can see the lights from the three different slide projectors cycling behind the "$2000 - Move One Space - Whammy" square.
Pretty neat.
Yeah, it would be pretty weird for Goofy to be saying that phrase.
*YOU'RE... DESTHPICABLE!*
Immediately watched this after the Weird History video. Made me smile. :)
i knew that happen but Weird History refreshed that memory.
Sylvester always says that.
For those wondering who Bud Grant was, he was the president of CBS Entertainment at the time who green lit "Press Your Luck."
I thought it was Michael Brockman, the then-head of daytime programming at CBS who green-lit PYL's predecessor "Second Chance" when he was at ABC.
@@johnnyballenatl Brockman may have had the initial introduction, but it was ultimately up to Grant to have the final say.
Bud Grant was a great NFL coach too. 😛
Wow Legendary and late Mel Blanc Called.
He even uses Porky's stutter saying "Daffy Duck."
Since it's the voice actor of all of the characters on the phone
“Speedy Gonzales” sounded a bit like Blanc was still in character as Sylvester at first.
And Porky honestly sounded more like Bugs…
But hey, Mel Blanc was real old at the time, and this was a real treat he didn’t have to set up and do for us.
1:03 RIP Wardrobe guy
The Big Board Ate The Wardrobe Guy.
I knew it was wrong when I first saw this! My friends thought I made this whole thing up.
Pam on this episode will be back on the new Press Your Luck with Elizabeth Banks this week!
Where is information like that listed?
Was that actually Mel Blanc who called?
ky I would say yes.
@@stephenholloway6893 No one else but.
The one and only.
Who else could have pulled all those voices off so flawlessly?
@@PYLrulz1984 And Pam’s Clapping Hands win her Cash & Prizes together!
Who else is here because of AniMat's Animation Lookback video? I wonder how Mel Blanc knew when to call in or if he was told in advance?
I did.
Or maybe they intentionally gave the wrong answer so he could make a guest appearance?
Right here

@@electricsoul8624 Definitely not. Ever since the quiz show scandals of the 1950's, it's been illegal to rig game shows.
Mel blanc wasn't lying when he said all the Looney toons gang was with him he'll be was the whole gang they was in his head lol
yep, the man of 1000 voices
Geez, that host must have a couple brain-cells loose, cuz it was obviously Sylvester that said Sufferin' Succotash!
That must’ve been a snafu!
What does the stuttering at 0:22 have to do with Daffy Duck?
The host was probably pretending to be Porky as a Warner Bros. joke rather than just a Daffy Duck one.
Here because of weird history
well all the contestants came back the next day
Was that supposed to be Porky at the end? Sounded more like Bugs Bunny
That's because normally, Porky's voice would be sped up when Mel Blanc voiced him, but when calling on the phone he couldn't do that.
Zak Wolf oh, interesting, j never knew that.
Not only that, but Mel Blanc was almost 80 when this aired. He passed away just a few years after this.
You can really see how big big board is
Were they all invited back due to this?
1:30 🤣🤣🤣
Do you have the clip where Peter throws a stuffed animal through the board, I remember on that episode the board had eyes between the words "Press" and "Your" and an hand was reaching out of the "Your" and "Luck"

I think the show was 'planned' and decided to involve Mel Blanc in that episode.
@@Rlotpir1972I doubt it was planned. If it was, they wouldn't have invited all the players back.

:peter anybody in here
:random person WHAMMY WHAMMY
Lol, Daffy did indeed say "sufferin' succotash numerous times, and it seems like whoever wrote that question was trying to be a smartass.
1:01 🤣
that was hilarious!
WHAMMY WHAMMY!
I lost it about there.
Was that Mel Blanc calling Peter Tomarken?
Tyler Vielie I think so, and I think he was getting very old at the time.
Yes that was Mel Blanc.
Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies are from Warner Bros. Pictures.
Matt Crowley This would have 3 or 4 years before Mel Blanc died. Amazing that he could continue doing so many of his famous voices at that age.
No it's Sylvester!
THE WHAMMIES ATE EM!? HOLY (WHAM!)!! HOW THE (WHAM!) DOES SOMEONE GET EATEN BY A WHAMMY!? I DIDN'T KNOW THAT THEY WERE THAT VISIOUS!
What episode is this
As Todd Newton would say, "There's no call for that kind of language.".
