One thing I noticed in the Whammy specials from 85 and 86 not evident in the early months of PYL BUZZR has been showing most of: The game really got cut-throat later in it's run.
Jim Hess was the most pissed off contestant in game show history...that is, until 2002, when Jeff (last name unknown) on GSN's Friend or Foe? dropped a stream of expletives after being foe'd out of $3,200!

Man, Jim was done SO wrong in that game. Even if I didn't have any chance of winning, I'd still take my chances instead of potentially screwing someone else over.

Sam, on the other hand, I despised him immensely. I hope one day when I see him, I’ll give him a nice “Token of Appreciation” after all those years. That’ll avenge Jim.

Indeed-- stranger things have happened; even with one spin, you can go on a run by hitting the $+1 spaces many times in a row to keep it going, and even if you don't ultimately win, you can give the other players a good run for their money.
It wasn’t in malice. Watch Sam react after Jim Whammies in the final spin. He clearly jumps up and begins pumping his arms up and down in celebration. I am 💯 certain Sam had a brain fart Linda (picking Tokyo when she needed something with an additional spin) style, thinking if Jim hit a whammy, he, not Pamela, would win. Either that or he REALLY disliked Jim, was smitten with Pamela or both. Can’t see it though. Even when asked at the end, you can tell he feels like a dope and got carried away.
I did feel bad for Jim. Usually do when the person winning whammied on their last spin.. however, I won’t blame Sam for it.
If anything, I feel Peter could have better explained the situation before Sam passed. He should have said "Pamela will win the game" instead of "Pamela will be your best friend "
Further, granted it's four decades too late, but once Pamela chose to pass to Sam, it should have stood....she shouldn't have been allowed to change her mind and pass to Jim back in round one...
Apparently, none of them knew the Greek goddess of victory without choices. And Sam and Pamela didn't know that Adidas was named for it's founder Adi Dassler.

Lost in the humor of Jim’s vulgarity was the fact that Sam began celebrating after, thinking he won. You even hear him yell “Whammy time” right as Jim is about to go. He must have missed the part where Peter told him if Jim whammied, Pamela won.

@@biruss You see him celebrate after Jim hits the Whammy, as he begins pumping his arms in the air. I can’t imagine he grew that much contempt for Jim Hess, or that much of a kinship for Pamela during their time on the show to celebrate that much not winning himself. You see them yucking it up and laughing afterwards too in the closing credits. Sam goofed and thought he was winning, got caught up in the moment even though Peter told him otherwise. He spazzed out.
Peter didn't exactly give the best explanation before Sam passed that final spin....What does "Pamela will be your best friend" exactly mean? Now if Peter would have said "Pamela will win if Jim whammies", maybe Sam would have played the lat spin.
I'm surprised they took the close up of Jim at the end after he had dropped a S bomb.
*Is anyone else watching this after it was announced that Elizabeth Banks is hosting the Summer 2019 revival of Press Your Luck?*
I saw snippets of the "New Press Your Luck". It's really a sad experience. They're using the same opening script, but the announcer ain't Rod Roddy. The studio set up is really over the top; too glitzy and noisy. Elizabeth Banks ain't Peter Tomarken. I'm sorry, the new version just doesn't work for me.

There were quite a few “oops, I just really got ahead of myself” moments like this in PYL. Gotta chalk it up to nerves and adrenaline.

You know what would have been funnier? If the Whammy where Jim cussed up a storm came up when he stopped the board on a safe space, only to have it change to a Whammy (which has happened before; someone stops on what they think is, say, a $500 space, and then a second later, a Whammy shows up; fourth Whammies/Whammy-outs have happened that way too).
Well, when you're as passionate about the game as that middle guy, and the Whammies have a vendetta against you, and the other two players have wise passing strategies, then yeah, you're bound to lose your cool and produce loose lips capable of sinking a whole navy's worth of ships.

I NEED someone to find Sam today... or Jim today... if they're still alive. I'm convinced in my head that Jim was showboating or extremely cocky backstage... he and Sam were at each other's throats all day (since they tape 5 shows a day)... and that last pass was purely vindictive and his excuse was bs. That's why the "thanks a lot!" before Jim's spin was so extreme and probably personal.

There were quite a few changes on the board in round two between Larson's episode and this one. Most of the changes happened three weeks prior to this episode, most notably the two whammies in squares 1 and 17 moving to squares 18 and 16, respectively.
Pamela would compete on the next episode against one of the contestants that the audience hated so much with a passion. That contestant was Scott.
Lol it was hilarious when the audience was clapping when Sam got a whammy in Round 2.

There was nothing on the board worth that much. Only the Car, African Safari, and Mediterranean Cruise were worth that much at this point - the Safari needed the Fur Coat to be hit first to appear, and the Cruise needed London to be hit first.
While it's true that Sam's pass was a faux paux, as it were, his only way to win was to get additional spins once or enough times, then hit something worth enough to do it. The Motorboat (4891) would be closest, but still needed at least one $500 + a Spin first.
The odds are higher that Jim hits a whammy than Sam keeps the game going with extra spins. Also Jim was getting a bit too cozy so he needed to get taken down a notch.
One of my least favorite episodes, glad Pamela won.
