My father has been the singer of a funk and blues and rock n roll band his whole life and when I was a kid he would do the James Brown split on top of bars while singing! He is an amazing entertainer still at 70.

When I was a kid, back in the 60’s, my mother took me and my siblings to the Albee Theater in downtown Brooklyn, NY, to see James Brown. I watched him slide, on one foot, all the way across the stage from the far left to the far right! It was like he was moving on a conveyor belt. I STILL wonder, How the hell did he do that!! His shows were very exciting. The whole band was doing steps and their shoes were so shiny they looked like glass! Maaaaaan! That was the ultimate show time!! Mm Mm Mm ...

I also seen the shows in downtown Brooklyn many years ago . James Brown was fantastic they were so friendly they shook hands with the crowds while they performed on stage and he was just Electric and he really did perform those stunts on stage as well as sing songs that we never do know the words but we remember the scream.aieeeee hit me. Payback. Gone forever but never forgotten, the King of Soul.

James could do splits that would terrify many aspiring gymnasts. AND!...never forget, he did it with a package that had to be protected!! LOL James was never less than sheer, TOTAL! mastery of the stage! Persona magnified, to fill ALL the space around!!

After a while, he *did* hurt himself. It caught up with him. He had arthritis *and* osteoporosis in full swing by the time of his death..
But the Godfather of Soul, the Hardest Working Man in Showbiz could not cease.
Part of his death was an overdose (this is a man who took painkillers for his joints and tendons, and took viagra everyday for his libido). The other half being his extravagant and (painfully) exerting lifestyle.

a little richard book I'd read (written by himself mostly) mentions something about James (at the beginning) almost being too wild for some of the record corps. ;) James did continue to have some wild times even late in life.. I recall reading in the paper once about some wild police chase thing; he was speeding and also armed. (pretty high as well.) and .. as I recall, it seemed at the time not all that much came
of that one. (vague memory; that was in the mid 70's or late sometime.)

Yeah he got the moves from James but I think Prince perfected the splits even better then James
Kevin Cox I think JB was going for rough, gritty funk but Prince wanted sleek, polished funk as also evident in their appearance. Therefore, the moves represented them, the art of dance is so linked to personality.
