    Don't worry teardrop fans! The teardrop isn't going anywhere! This new trailer of ours is more designed for State Parks and paid camping. With the clearance and size we will continue to take out the teardrop trailer to all our favorite boondocking locations. Basically this trailer will fit in well where the 13' Scamp was useful for our family in the past. As this channel is basically a fun attempt to find the perfect trailer and share what we learn along the way with you all, you will continue to see different small trailers make appearances. Thank you all for the support and the great community you have built here at Playing with Sticks!

      It is still running around Alaska. The owner graciously lets us take it out every summer. I have a feeling though it will be quite a while until we use it again as this trailer mirrors it in so many ways. It feels just like the Scamp, but the interior layout is a bit different. It works really well for our growing family.

    We had this same trailer in the beginning of our marriage. We purchased when we were married one year. Our oldest child was just born. As he grew and we had second child, my father-in-law built doors with covered wire in center and he attached them to fold down. That is where the kids slept. They were secure, couldn’t fall out of bed and could not climb out. The wire fence gave them plenty of air but kept them safe. Brings back memories. The oldest learned to walk camping in Shenandoah Mountains seeing lots of bears and deer in campground. We are retired now and we have a 31ft rv so we are still camping and have taken all 4 gkids camping somewhere every summer. They are all grownup, 3 in college and other one will be in a year. Great times with your kids.

      This is our favorite comment yet! These are the type of stories we love hearing. We hope to have stories like this to share one day as well. Our camping experiences with our grandparents greatly shaped who we are today and the interests that have led us into our love of small camper trailers. They didn't do anything extraordinary. They just took the time to show us their passions, took us along even though we slowed them down, and planted that seed that we hope to plant in our own children.

      And that’s why I’m clicking off the video. Videos where parents make the kids the butt of the joke for social media (HE thinks this beach has sand and that he’s going swimming haha) are so sad. The child even said yes and I’m going to build a sand castle, and you can build a sand castle too! Why not take that moment to teach your child and level set his expectations instead of letting him be excited and make plans in his head?

    Your son is so sweet, omg. I want to borrow him for hugs! That expression was priceless. Be careful exposing him to paints indoors. They really damage sensitive lungs. That baby is so adorable too, just staring into space. Enjoy them, they grow so fast.
    You know what I do for metal nowadays. I use an angle grinder with a crimped wire cup brush ($5 at Harbor Freight) and polish all rust, grime, grease, paint off everything. Works very well. You have to be gentle on the wood pieces or you end up with textured wood but it does the edges and curves well. You can also use a nylon cup brush for wood prepping, then sand over it, saving sandpaper. On nylon, RPM should be 2500 or less or it will melt. That metal stove would be perfect with a wire wheel polish, no messy chemicals needed.
    Trailer looks incredible, wow! What a difference. Very professional work and lovely home for you all. Now you gotta bring the kiddos to California to swim in a warm ocean and play in warm sand. They would love it.

    What a difference the white/gray combo makes with the touch of blue, so much lighter and more inviting.
    And little East must've been so bummed out he couldn't go for a swim 😆 More like a snow castle instead of sand castle

    • @PlayingwithSticks
      @PlayingwithSticks  Před 4 lety

      It was a tough choice to make on the paint. After I sanded the wood got a lot lighter and I was able to see the potential of a really nice light stain if I was to sand down to the grain. But, this trailer was May's and she wanted the white. I agree it does look really light and airy when you are in it. Love the snow castle instead of sand castle. I should have offered that up as an alternative to him.

  • @uweschroeder
    @uweschroeder Před 4 lety +7

    Love it how you integrate your son into doing things. That's sort of rare these days and I remember my parents doing that - from cooking and canning to sewing and painting. I think it gives you a better perspective on things later in your life - plus it hones those DIY skills that save you so much money in your life.
    Good job on the trailer - being the German perfectionist I am I'd probably have guttet it, insulated it and rebuilt the furniture from scratch going way over budget and finishing it in 5 years. Just finished my house remodel - and done ... 15 years later (to be fair, I guttet most of the house and redid most of the drywall etc., so lots of work and for the area definitely over-remodeled, but it's for us, so who cares).
    Don't hang mitts and towels above the burners! That's a fire hazard. Better hang something more fire resistant there and put the flammable stuff away from the flames. This is a old trailer and probably everything in there is super flammable.

    • @PlayingwithSticks
      @PlayingwithSticks  Před 4 lety +3

      Thanks for catching that mitts and towels thing! You would think that would be common sense, but we didn't even think twice about that. We were hoping to get East more involved with the project. Unfortunately he was only involved in the priming and sewing as the majority of this project took place at night while he was sleeping. I have had some great men in my life who took me under their wing when I was young. One of the things I remember most about great men is that they often would say "we" when talking about projects even though they did all the work and I basically watched. We changed out the fuel pump, we pulled the calf during calving season. This is a characteristic I always wanted to adopt. May and I work a lot with youth and adults and "we" is a big part of our vocabulary. A rant here, but one of my funniest we moments in the last few years was at work. I was up for a promotion, but still was required to interview for the new position.The panel would ask me questions about my operations and success. I would answer "We...." The panel would say that is great, but what did "you" do? I eventually had to explain to them my philosophy. Although "I" did most of these things well at least 90% of the work, my team "we" did this. I explained to them that it is a great motivator, makes a cohesive team, gives buy-in, etc. They didn't get it. Inside I was thinking this is why our team is much more successful than the teams the panel members were a part of. My team members felt valued and part of the process. I know this isn't a philosophy that fits everyone, but it has been very successful so far for me in life.
      Your remodel sounds like quite the project. I like your style. When my parents first saw the trailer I told them my plans. They said, "Drew you know how your projects turn out." Just keep it simple and don't get too detailed or you will never get this done by spring." I am SO GLAD I followed their advice.

But, now that it is done I am glad she chose this route because it was so much easier not having to track down original parts and adding some of those needed details to keep it original. Some of the parts of the trailer that needed more repair we now call "character." That character would have taken a bit of time and money to get back to it's original state.

      Have we told you before that your Apache trailer is our dream trailer! We have told quite a few people on here, so we are starting to get folks mixed up. We missed buying one by 2 hours this fall down on the Kenai. We were really bummed. The only thing now that I question is mosquitoes. I have watched a ton of videos about these trailers and when they pop-up I see a lot of sunlight coming through where the walls meet. This wouldn't be an issue for most folks in the Lower 48, but up here it would be a big deal. I'm wondering if there is some sort of solution out there for this. It would be tough because it would have to be modular as the camper opens and closes. When you get that camper up and running send us a photo! Would love to see it in action.

      I think you already are. I have lots of great memories with my parents camping all over OR and WA. Before he died I took my dad in one last glamping trip by renting a rustic cabin in Olympic national park. He could barely walk anymore but I drive all over the park and did short walks. Mostly we sat near the lake and enjoyed our cabin and cooked on the campfire and reminisced about camping and hiking memories. We had an old canvas tent that went with us everywhere. Later he built a camper on the back of his truck. Then eventually bought one. Lots of great memories.
