I’ve been doing joinery mostly with hand tools for over 45 years, and have made a living at it and am slightly proficient by now. But I come here for my daily dose of humility from a true master. His sharpest tools are his hands, eyes and mind. And his other tools are merely razor sharp!

I am so blown away by his skills. How does he remember or come up with these different wooden joints. He uses only hand tools to cut these masterpieces. I love watching him work.

This is known as Abraham Lincoln's mallet, he came up with it a long time ago.

Now that's a wooden hammer, looks very heavy duty.

Great work as usual, and the creativity -- amazing. But why not use a brace and bit to remove a lot of the waste? They're still hand tools

Undoubtedly, definitely simple, but unique, unprecedented, unparalleled masterpiece. No need for glue or fasteners. Simple , but very effective, very strong, very sturdy locking mechanism. As always, great .

Beautiful work! As a man of carpentry, I definitively need to make a mallet like this one for myself.
To bad it cracked during assembly, maybe steaming the handle before applying the clamp, would help alleviate some of the tension in the wood.

    Hi HCarpenter,
Great work! If some kids with these skills would like an opportunity, a relative of mine is a carpenter who specializes in repairing the woodwork in temples in Nara. If there is a smart kid who wants to apprentice and is willing to learn Japanese, there could be a chance for him. For the record, being an apprentice in Japan is hard, and even as a journeyman the money will never be fantastic.

This is almost identical to what's known as the "Impossible dovetail" joint or, AKA, Lincoln dovetail.

Many years ago, when they built the 3 Gorges Dam in China, they removed many historical wooden structures or temples and relocated them to other places or they would be under the water. Some videos, partially, showed how they disassembled buildings and assembled them back together. I wondered if they cut the joints. After watching many videos from this H Carpenter master, I think the Chinese knew how to take the joints apart piece by piece.

Japanese style joints or similar. Chinese style saw or similar. Chinese style chisels . But he looks maybe Indonesian or Malaysian. Either way he`s a Genius . He looks less reserved and more friendly and Matey than a Japanese. This Hammer design had me worried till he got the clamp out .A pure joy to watch .
