A little confused here. The part you cut at 14:11 seems to be wrong (cut the positive parts of the tails rather than the negative) and is not used in the final construction (which has another piece with proper pins cut). Am I missing something?

A lot of work to span a post...The better joint is to create a shoulder so the beam bear entirely...The beginning of the joint is a weak point...Carpenter for 35 years...

Back in the day this was great. But now we have screws and gusset plates to bind/join at many times greater strength. Useless and weak in modern construction. Perfect for its time and design though. Time changes, yet these lil tricks are what made life work. That said, 2024, gussets and screws...

Only curious. But wouldn't that joint only be as strong as the skinny piece of wood sticking out from the center of the end? I feel like I could break that with a good sideways wack of a mallet. Hopefully, this joint isn't load bearing.
