    The only thing I hated about being a DA was whenever I went to work with a new doctor, they expected me to know what they wanted and how they wanted it on the very first try, without even bothering to tell me how they liked things. Every dentist works differently, has a different style, and it takes time to learn their movements and their personal flow. Yet explaining this to most dentists is like talking to a brick wall.

    • @Geminitwins247
      @Geminitwins247 Před 5 lety +64

      Agreed, in the office I work for we have an oral surgeon come in every few months or so and at first I thought I would be able to get his flow but unfortunately I haven't been able to grasp his way of working. I'm to use to the way my dentist works and the way she does things. Luckily for me I think the dentist I work for sees that and decides to chair side assist him when he comes in.

      Omg Ik!!!
      When I started working with a new doctor I didn't know he wanted me to do the cleaning after put the crown (like cleaning the remains of the cement)
      And so he want to the other room to see another patient and I didn't know what to do, cus the patient was waiting with his fricking mouth open with remains of the glue and the cement, when I told the doctor we didn't finish with him yet he rolled his eyes at me, and said very loudly (in front of the patient!) What don't you understand clean the rest, you are wasting my time...
      And I was like : fuck, he is gonna be very fun to work with😑

    It’s absolutely ridiculous how hard we as assistants work out of everyone else in the practice and yet we are paid the lowest. Between maintenance, ordering supplies, preparing lab cases, sterilization, disinfection of rooms and surface areas, we hardly get what others receive as a full break or lunchtime. Constantly trying to get setups, rooms and patients cared for and yet we are the ones disrespected patients, staff and cheap dentists. During these times of pandemic we are highly at risk of an exposure and yet we continue our roles and duties as health care providers to provide patients with proper treatment and oral health education. Dental assistants deserve more respect, higher pay and benefits just as much as others receive in the oral healthcare field. Without assistants there would be no dental practice.

      @@jodieton3630 We do provide! Everything!!! From making sure the instruments are sterilization to checking the patient's medical history so they're not given epi if they have a heart issue!! No one wants to be on the front line of the #1 most dangerous job there is in this pandemic. Doctors don't know anything about sterilization protocol let alone breaking down a opertorary and set up. Most don't know where anything is!! Why do hygienist have a national group and assistant don't. Why aren't we organized. Why aren't we unionized? We have been abused, monetarily, emotionally and in some cases physically!! We hold the cards now ladies. Let's empower ourselves!!

A very good employer to which I was sad that I had to leave. I already have a bachelor degree so I wouldn't say I messed up. Also the dental hygiene programs in my area are very tough to get into cause there are only a few. For me, i've decided to try to make use of my degree and find a decent paying job hopefully with benefits. That is another thing with the dental field. It can be tough to get full benefits. But yeah Lucky for me I had a good experience working as a dental assistant.

    Great job on making this video! I'm one of the very few male dental assistants. I've worked as a DA for more than 8 years. I enjoy the work itself, but the dentist you work for makes all the difference. I've had my share of working with verbally abusive dentists. That feeling of dread of coming to work in the morning is the worst, all because of the dentist.

    Way to much duties on one person, not to mention no breaks in between patients. Your honestly lucky if you even get a lunch or time to drink water. You literally have to cut yourself in 3 to get everything done. It's impossible for one person to tray set, get the room ready, sterilize, assist dentint, and handle the front desk all at once. This is the main reason why everyone that graduates as a DA doesn't stay long in the practice long

I remember I had to go to the rest room so bad that when he left to check a Hygiene patient I took the chance and ran to the rest room. It wasn't but 2 minutes later he was knocking on the door saying "Are you done yet?" I quickly finished and being so incensed though gritted teeth I growled "I AM NOW." Went and grab my purse and out the door I went. BTW I did get unemployment on this.

    The roles of a dental assistant are similar yet so different from a dental nurse. Its weird to think you all help each other out so much and can flow so we'll. We have to see 15-25 patients in the morning and again in the afternoon and half are emergencies. It's great you all work as a team as we have to do all this on our own. I work in a 7 surgery practice so we get through a lot of patients each day as every surgery is running.

Once you get the hang of it it’s all easy and fun ! Yea there’s tiring ass days and not only do you deal with mean patients like most ppl do in the health field .. you always gotta deal with dental anxiety ! To comfort someone and educate them and to help them reach their goals is satisfying . Also yes it’s very true that a lot of the dentist are mean the first office I worked at I had a very asshole of a Dr. to work with but now i moved onto a office and love the Dr. I work with!! One day I would love to go back to school to become a hygienist to further my dental career !

    I’m a dental technician and I’ve had the opportunity to experience this role as part of my national service. For me it’s been an okay experience. The downside for me is the long hours on your feet and the workload. Also you’d have to deal with very disrespectful doctors who don’t appreciate the effort you put in place to keep the surgery running at all times. I don’t like the job because it offers no career progression. I got a degree in Dental Laboratory Sciences and somehow learnt the nurse role in a week so for me it’s not a special job and it doesn’t even pay as much considering how stressful it is. Highly wouldn’t recommend 🥴

    Here in uk we don't use lead aprons, nd its always such a rush at work between patients, in private practice its abit laid back, but NHS its always rush rush, also the dentist talks more to the patient then the assistant will do, and we do forehand dentistry, but the tray is always on the side of the dentist, and so is the 3in1
