Sewing a Rita Blouse for a Casual Vintage Capsule Wardrobe

  • Ups! I got sidetracked! Feel free to shame me in the comments! 😅 I was supposed to be making a shirt from the same pattern as last week, but I have to go buy fabric for it!
    Is this blouse a good addition to the Capsule Wardrobe, or should I chuck it in the dark recesses of my closet?

    I keep mockups to make mockups, or as extra fabric for things like pockets, or for some smaller projects. Scraps I shred to use as filling for pillows. Love this Vitch series!

    All my mock ups are wearable! I took up sewing as a way to not only create the fashion I'm interested in, but to also reduce my waste. So even my muslins are created with zero waste in mind. According to the the old ladies at the fabric store, technically almost all quilting cotton is considered muslin (at least to them, and maybe they're right), so I took that and ran with it. I buy the cheap quilting cottons in fabrics with a soft hand in fabrics that I'd actually wear out. And for the most part, non-sewists don't know the difference between fashion fabric and craft fabric so I have no problems wearing my mock ups as my day dresses. As for the mock ups that don't end up successful, they get turned into pockets and bias binding!

      Wow - i didn’t know that about quilting fabric. I have only brought quilting fabric purely as we live in a tropical climate (top end of Australia) and with our humidity only wearing cotton and so so love the endless options of prints

    Love to see a ruffle skirt made in the same fabric as this blouse. So you could have the option of it to look like a dress or wear as seperates as well.
    I try to re-use my mock-ups to create new design etc. You can also paint or dye if you want to make them more wearable.

    Honestly half of them get lost in the general chaos of my sewing supplies, some I have deliberately kept for things where I've done a lot of fitting, and some go into the scrap bin and get cut into increasingly small pieces, sometimes for use as facings/reinforcements, stuffing etc... I don't know that I would recommend this plan in it's entirety 😂😂 I just wanted to say that I adore this series, and all your videos. They are so fun and bring a smile to my face every time I see one 😊

    I reuse my mockups for other mockups and when the pieces are too small I still save the fabric and use it as interlining material for collars, cuffs, lapels, and other bits that need some extra reinforcement (I'm too cheap to use my good fabric on hidden things, but the cotton calico I use for mockups its perfect for this).

  • @emilysmith2784
    @emilysmith2784 Před 2 měsíci

    Damn girl. You look great in that top.
    I struggle to throw anything away so mock up fabric either goes back into the mock up fabric basket, if the pieces are big enough for something else otherwise they are cut into cabbage and are used to stuff pillows and teddies when needed. That’s only cotton mock up fabric. Synthetic tends to be tossed as they were usually old clothes I don’t like anymore so have already served a second purpose and I don’t feel so bad throwing them away.

    Winnie activated destruction mode 😄. But he's so adorable anyway, trying so hard to put the pattern on the fabric and all 😆
    Rita blouse is one of my faves because it's to easy, quick and fits so good. I've made 3 last summer and hope to make a couple more at least this one too 👌🏻
    Unpopular way of doing things coming 🤫🙈 I usually toss my mock ups on the trash 🙈, unless it's a really big piece of fabric I can reuse for another one ...🤫. I've heard that a lot of people use their mock-up as a lining, but, I never tried, I prefer to do a mock up with a fabric I don't care about, but, maybe it's me 🤷🏻‍♀🙃

    Your gratuitous sewing machine shots reminded me that I desperately need a serger. I've wanted one since high school but have always just made do with my Mom's (admittedly beautiful) Pfaff from the 60's. Sadly I have no idea how much machine I need.
    As for mock ups...I generally keep them with the pattern. I use whatever scrap material I have around including old sheets, so they're not wearable. However, I always have to really overhaul patterns to get them to fit correctly (I'm tall and long-waisted), so my idea is that it's now the pattern if I ever choose to make something again. Admittedly I never make things more than once (and my size sadly fluctuates up and down constantly), but that's the thought behind keeping it. Really I'm probably just a low-key fashion hoarder.

    Your blouse is cute. I make my mock-ups from old bedsheets from the charity shop. I keep all my mockups in a box. I often come back to a design and change features so it's useful to be able to compare versions. Sometimes I cut up mock-ups to make pieces for new mock-ups. I'm not someone who can generally make wearable mock-ups because there is always something that needs changing like adding more length or changing the shoulder slope.

    The blouse turned out so cute and fits with the skirt quite nicly. So I'm totally with you 9/10 before you fix the back and 10/10 after. I'm not sure if I'd sew one for myself because I'd be annoyed after some time putting the sleeves back in their meant to be position, but I'm glad it works for you, since it looks really cute especially in that fabric! • @mollyn03
    @mollyn03 Před 2 měsíci

    I usually only make non-wearable mockups if I am trying out something completely new and I don't know if my alterations etc will work. In that case - I keep the mockup, in case I want to make changes to the pattern later on, then I will have a scrap version of it I don't mind drawing on to work out changes etc. Otherwise, I often make mock-ups in a cheep lining material (e.g. cotton poplin) and use it to line the finished garment - that way if I need to piece anything to make it work etc the mess is hidden & I still get to use the material.

    I know of one person that chops up the scraps/mockups to make stuffing for dog beds and toys. Currently the large majority of mine are suitable for around the house wear, but the few that aren't I keep for pocket bags and underlinings, etc.

  • @MiffoKarin
    @MiffoKarin Před 2 měsíci

    The blouse turned out super cute! Pinky and Winnie are also super cute.
    If the mock-up fits well, I'll wear it around the house or use it as the lining for the actual fabric. If it doesn't fit or I don't like the fabric, it goes in my scraps bag. Then it gets used for pockets, cat toys, patchwork, mending patches or cut up and used for stuffing.

    That is a *perfect* summer top. Love the print. And the fuzzy overlords have broken the "Cuteness Scale"...
    _Mock-up suggestion_ - I've sewn a small collection of yoga-style meditation cushions (circular top & bottom, rectangular side panel sewn into pleats, small handle where the sides overlap each other). That's where I stuff my scraps that are too small to use and the mock-ups. Because I have so many adjustments to make to any standard pattern that I'm facing down multiple mock-ups to get the job done (le sigh). Eventually some of those cushions will be gifts. In the meantime, they make floor troll possible with my proto-arthritis knees.

      *OH MY GOODNESS* 🤩 I looove the idea of those floor cushions!! Thank you so much for sharing it with me, Cathy! Maybe I should try to make one of those and make it into a video? 🤩 thank you so much for your comment, Cathy ❤️❤️❤️ also, you have my deepest sympathy about the multiple mockups. I feel like the only thing more boring than making mockups is cutting our fabric pieces and interfacing 😅

      @@Marlenasewing Yes, absolutely, turn it into a video; share the love, Baby Doll... lol... I found the instructions somewhere in Google-land...
      I also hand-sewed a Moroccan-style poof during the first lockdown (it holds the good scraps I want to use again).
      If you're looking for something a little less lumpy you can use your roller-cutter to make the mock-ups into smaller 'coleslaw' for the pillow.
      I'm a 36 G, sway back, short waisted, t-rex armed and not necessarily tall and not necessarily slim. Mock-ups... I'm learning to make peace with them. Le Sigh. I actually like the cutting out (it means 'Decisions Have Been Made'). Not so much for cutting the interfacing, for some reason. But I definitely have to take a day between cutting and sewing...

  • @KidGloved
    @KidGloved Před 2 měsíci

    i save mockups if there is a space that's around 20 cm square. I do a lot of jackets and so that is enough to help drape a collar or sleeve cuff. I will also save them if I think I might what a slightly different version; if I have the mock up I can make adjustments directly. So, save it if there is enough uncut fabric to use for something else. if not, it will just cause clutter. I've also repurposed scraps to make pattern weights and other small miscellaneous items.

    I generally make mockups out of white sheets from the thrift store. Then i cut any smaller scraps and the mockup into useful sizes for quilting (2.5", 5", squares or strips mostly). If you don't quilt and the fabric is decent quality you could prob sell bags of those!

    I throw all my mockups and scraps into a bag with the intention of doing something with them only to have the bags pile up and then I get mad at the clutter and throw them all away. It's only after they are security in Trashcity that I find a good use for them, get annoyed at myself for throwing them away and start a new bag so the cycle continues. It's not a great system and I don't recommend it😆

It looked to me like you could take the same blouse and position the sleeves to sit on the shoulder to make a square-ish neckline or pull them down to off-the-shoulder to switch the look up as the mood strikes. Is that the case, or are there different instructions for how to make it either on the shoulder or off the shoulder?

    I have only made a mock up for my oldest daughter's wedding dress. When my sister came to visit, she asked what I was doing, and I told her that I was making a mock-up of the bodice. She shook her head, and said, Why don't you just do it right the first time? I told her that normally, I would, but that I only had a little fabric, and no pattern, so I wanted to make sure before I cut into it.
    Normally, I cut out the largest pattern size, and fit down to where I need to be.

    I try to make wearable mockups, but some are too experimental or require too much altering. Those either get salvaged for another mockup, facings or what have you, or are taken apart and used as a pattern (depending on whether or not i achieve the desired result) or just turned into rags if the fabric has been repurposed enough times.

    I do mockups in fabric I am not thrilled with or scraps so mine are not always wearable, I reuse largbe mockups into smaller mockups * like a princess bodice can be cut from a skirt. After I make the proper project I sometimes still keep the original mockup for evaluating fitting because the mockup is maybe in a different type of fabric that has a different fit. I keep it with the pattern in a larger envelope , if it fits. When the mockups are too small to reuse and I have no interesest in keeping, I put them in bags together, labelled as scrap textile and give to fretex who, I heard, will recycle the textiles. I hope that is true.
