- Part 1 of making this gorgeous Butterick pattern! Next week, I will be making the shirt.
What do you think about the skirt? Should I take the hem up a little?
Should I try other pencil skirt patterns for the capsule wardrobe, or stick to this one?
I really appreciate all your comments, even if I don't get the time to reply. I read them all! ❤️ I started referring to the capsule wardrobe as "ours" because I feel like you are making it with me! All your suggestions and helpful comments are greatly appreciated! ❤️❤️❤️
I don't know how but I lost the footage of making and trying on the mockup! It's a shame because the mockup was 100% true to the vintage pattern!

I actually worked in footwear (specifically materials) for almost 20 years. I *sighed* at your shoe comment. The short answer? Companies think it's too expensive because they still think the consumer wants to buy five pairs of the same shoe in every color and a shoe for every activity so they have to be cheap so the customer will buy more. Which of course is completely opposite of what people actually want (which is why I'm no longer in footwear and have a happy job at a "boring" company sans the drama). Make one (or two!) good shoes, with beautiful materials and construction, charge what it costs, tell people why it costs that much, and sit back and collect the monies.
Omg!!!🤩 when I made that comment, I never in my wildest dreams imagined getting an actual response 😍 thank you so much for your comment!!!🙏❤️ I really appreciate you sharing this information with us! It is indeed a shame that the footwear business works as it does. No matter how many pairs of shoes I have, I will always gravitate towards the comfortable ones, so all the others rarely get used.
@@MarlenasewingThank you for your kind comment. It breaks my heart because it’s an industry I absolutely love. But it’s been utterly ruined. My role has been eliminated at most companies and they simply allow the overseas factories to choose the material suppliers, or even pay agents to source even the factory. You can imagine what this leads to (child labor, toxic chemicals, poor quality for starters). Raw material prices have gone sky high over the last 15-ish years. But they underestimate a consumer’s willingness to pay for a decent shoe. Most at the top aren’t footwear or fashion people. They’re accountants, lawyers, MBA’s. So stock prices and short term gains are the only concern, not the long-term health of the company or customer loyalty. And I’ll get off my soapbox now and get back to watching you make beautiful clothing. 😂
Leave it be. The widest part of the calf is a good spot to hem to. It's timeless and classic.
I'm glad you think so! Thank you so much for your comment 😃❤️❤️❤️
It's so cute that Pinky goes for a walk with you, my cats would run off and go missing, Winnie is the cutest dog i ever saw.
Awww! Thank you so much for your comment! ❤ Yes, Pinky has his strange little habits. He always likes to go on a walk with me, but always follows a few steps behind. I imagine it is to make sure no cat friends see that he hangs out with a human. Yuck!😂
🦊❤
I love that you showed the range of motion in the skirt and explained what you did to achieve it.
Thank you so much for your kind comment!🙏❤️ it's just a shame that my sd card ate the footage where I show you the mockup. It would have been a great comparison between the original and the final result. But I am glad you liked it either way! 😊 thank you so much for watching 🤗❤️❤️
So cute to see Pinky and Winnie playing together
I think the length is perfect! Very chic and sophisticated.
I think the length is great, it gives a vintage look without being frumpy. 🦊 I'm not built for pencil skirts myself (too short and pear shaped), but they look great on you!
Pinky and Winnie playing together is adorable, thank you for including so much of it. 🥰
Aww, I'm glad you like seeing Pinky and Winnie 😊❤️ btw, I think pear-shaped women and pencil skirts are a match made in heaven 😍 but I understand it all comes down to personal preference.
🦊Winnie is the best vintage wardrobe accessory there is! 😍
Awww! 💕I totally agree! Haha!❤️ thank you so much for your comment 🙏❤️
Agreed! He is scrumptious!
@@Marlenasewing also I love the skirtlength as it is! Looks so pretty🥰
Much sympathy for those accidental cuts into the skirt! I've lost track of the number of times I went to snip a loose thread and snipped the main fabric, or caught something in the overlocker! Your skirt looks great at that length, and it looks like the vent in the back is meant to be open anyway! Also thank you for the adorable pet content! We're not in a position to have pets, so I love watching yours playing, having fun, etc!
Thanks so much for mentioning that we needn't internalize the sewing model caricatures... it's something I struggle with too ❤
Oh, I am so glad I am not the only one! 💔💔 what helped me break the spell was hearing someone mention that on some of these illustrations, the ladies have a waistline the size of their necks😂 I actually went and checked with a ruler!😂 it IS TRUE 🤯🤣
I’m starting a vintage capsule wardrobe on my channel as well! I wish more vintage sewing CZcamsrs would make them. Seeing how others get creative with it is so fun! Loving your series and the pencil skirt turned out lovely ❤
Omg!! Hello, Cindy!🤩 I have watched *ALL* of your videos!! You're an amazing seamstress, and everything you make is beautiful! I can't wait to see your capsule wardrobe 😍 I just have to go and subscribe from my public YT account (so you get two subs just from one, humble, me😅). Seeing you in my comments is a real treat❤️ thank you for being here!
@@Marlenasewing Wow thank you so much for your kindness ~ watching my stuff & subscribing twice omg 🥹🥲🙏 Means the world to me & truly I hope to reach your level of expertise and skill one day!! I will always support you too - thank you! 🙏❤️💕🥰

The skirt is a lovely colour and the length suits you. Leave it be.
N’night to Winnie and Pinkie.
Aww! thank you so much, Richard!❤️❤️❤️I gave them both goodnight kisses from you yesterday❤️
I think the length is perfect. With the style of the skirt, it looks sexy, but still modest.
So beautiful!! I love the adventures of making this skirt and adventures of snow with the fur babies!
A guest cat named Basti did the same to my skirt. I washed this part of the skirt and now I have two different colours😂 and of course it was not a cheap fabric at all. Thank you, Basti.❤
The colour of the skirt with your hair is SO beautiful! And this video was so entertaining. Pinky and Winnie are so cute and hilarious. The silent movie type music on the background certainly helped 😂 well done on everything! ❤️
Aww! Thank you so much for your encouraging comment!!🙏❤️❤️ I really appreciate it!
🤩Perfect skirt and fun with the furry babies. Sounds like a good time to me. ❄The snow is very pretty but, I am glad to go outdoors in a t-shirt! But really, I love this wardrobe you are creating for yourself. 👏❤ Thank you for sharing some of your life with me/us.
ohh, I am so jealous! I wish I lived somewhere warmer too!😅 thank you so much for being here, @nanacoleen ❤️❤️❤️ I always smile when I see a comment from you❤️
It’s the perfect length ❤❤❤
I'm so glad you think so! Thank you so much for your comment 🙏❤️❤️❤️
I love how it turned out, and it’s the perfect length!
Aww, thank you so much for your comment! I'm glad you think the length is ok!🙏❤️❤️❤️
🦊 Prague has sneaky spring, like trees are in full bloom now instead of late april and it can all still freeze over, I would prefer it do not deceive us with the sun and cold and just staying cold for little more and then just go to warm :D Love the skirt, I need to get to drawing board with pencil skirt, I am trying them all in trift stores but always having them tight over the one widest point of my hips, its very annoying :D
My mom sends me pictures from Poland, and I keep getting jealous of how nice it is over there already! 🥲 proper spring, but as you say, one never knows when winter will say, "I'm not quite done here."😂 Thank you so much for your comment and for watching the video ❤️❤️❤️
Lovely. Shoes and top look fantastic as well. Envious of the shoes!
Aww! Glad you like them! I feel fortunate to have found them! Thank you so much for your kind comment! ❤
Thank you for sharing this video! It cheered me up immensely! I'm sick with the flu.
It turned out well and fits you nicely. We all have sewing mishaps happen to us and yours was easily fixable and unable to tell. I wasn't so lucky with my last project 😭. The length is fine.
Too cute to see Winnie hae the zoomies indoors. Glad he is getting along well with Pinky. Was a wee bit worried when Pinky refused to sign the promise not to eat the new employee form.
This year the snow melted at the end of February over here. Two years ago we had snow at Easter and one of friends decided to not dye the Easter eggs, so the hunt took over an hour. The kids at the church weren't happy.
I bought a pencil skirt with pockets from How to do Fashion. Am really looking forward to it.
oh no!I hope you get better very soon❤️ haha I laughed at the description of last year's Easter egg hunt😂 I wonder if that one lady decided to sabotage it on purpose 😂 what en evil thing to do!😂😂
Thank you so much for your comment🤗❤️❤️
Omg its the same for weather in Canada. It was like plus 15 last week and this week its snowing
Holy mother, I'm glad we're not alone with the insane weather! 🤯 let's keep our fingers crossed for spring to remember us😅❤️
Great video the length is perfect. It’s such a gorgeous skirt on you.
Thank you so much for your kind comment! ❤️❤️❤️🤗
As much as I like your Brother it's so nice to see the Lean, Mean, Green Machine in use. The skirt turned out very well, despite unintended customisation from your scissors and your dog.
"Lean, Mean, Green Machine " - I love that!😍 I usually use my Brother when I want to save time. That's the machine I am most familiar with. 😅Thank you so much for your comment! ❤
Nice video, great team, amazing dress, thanks for sharing
Aww! Thank you for being here! You are the first one to comment! How nice!😃❤️❤️❤️
🦊love the length, can always make the next one shorter and then compare.
Thank you so much for your comment and for watching the whole video😊🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️
I would say check out the shoe manufacturer as they often use the same “last” for many years and just change out the top designs to stay current ( of course they may nip a toe here or there to match current trends, but you might find modern shoes with that same basic “build” when it comes time to replace them. BTW, I worked in a shoe factory during college and we used glue on leather, so don’t be afraid of that if they are coming apart. Just use sparingly, like when doing your nails, cause drips and drops will likely turn it a darker color. Of course, then you could also dye them, 😂. Love your vintage sewing. Always with fun furry animal escapades woven in!❤ Suzanne
Thank you so much for your helpful comment, Suzanne!!❤️ I really appreciate it 🙏❤️
Memery Shoes (based in Denmark) have some lovely vintage reproduction shoes. I can wear their heels all day ❤
🐶
I'm also sad that good quality and comfy shoes are hard to come by. Glad you found some that fit you and you like. Wishing you luck that some leather conditioner will help make them last longer and if it doesn't help maybe go to a shoe repairer, maybe they know if there's something you can do :)
I love the skirt, especially with the top! Don't change a thing, please! And Winnie is the perfect accessory!
The fabric was a great choice, its got the exact proper body, and the color is fantastic! You look wonderful!
Aww! Thank you so much for your very kind comment 🙏😊❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I love seeing Winnie and Pinky play. Pomeranians pick their person and it appears that you are Winnie's person. My Pom became my husbands Pom. I had surgery when my Peewee was a puppy and my husband had to take over puppy duties. Peewee became attached to my hubby. They love each other so much. Peewee is 16 April 25th. I have been looking for a Pom but here in the USA they cost thousands. Ever since Covid lockdown Pets became very, very expensive. I keep looking though because although I know that another Pom will never take Peewee's place, it might help my husband feel less depressed when Peewee crosses that rainbow bridge.
Awww, thank you for sharing a bit of Peewee's story 😍 what a sweet name, too! Yes, I was lucky to become Winnie's person. My man is a bit grumpy about him being a mamas boy 🙈😅 I actually noticed that Winnie prefers the company of females in general and is a bit more careful around males (even the little ones).
Dogs are stupidly expensive in Norway as well! That's partly the reason why I waited with getting Winnie for over 4 years. I just wasn't sure if I wanted to spend that kind of money! In the end, they are worth every penny, but.. I think there is a debate to be had. Poms came slightly down in price since the pandemic, but they are still expensive. I understand the struggle 💔 I hope you'll get your puppy soon! ❤️❤️❤️
So happy to see Pinky and Winnie playing together! Good to see Pinky around at all, he's been salty and absent the last few videos lol.
Also, as a Texan, I cannot imagine having such a long, intense winter. 🥶 I'd rather sweat than shiver!
Hello!🤗🤗 I would LOOOOVE to move to Texas! My goodness, I would rather sweat too!😂 plus, you guys have more freedom than we do here🥲 I learned to appreciate winter, but still... I would appreciate it more if it would kindly move on a bit quicker 😅
So nice to see you in the comments!!❤️🙏 thank you so much for watching ❤️
@@Marlenasewing lmao I dunno about the freedom part but the weather sure is nice to me 😂
lovely skirt! i like it just the way it is. :)
Aww, I am glad you liked it! Thank you so much for your comment! ❤
This is a great length of skirt for everyone - its not so long that you look like granny, and it hits at a nice place on the calf so the leg looks slim. (I am biased, i like my skirts to hit in the same place). a little longer or shorter looks strange, but this length is just flattering and classic. ALSO, i am glad to see that your projects are as chaotic as mine are hahahahaa.
Hahah chaos sisters 😂❤️ I am so glad you approve of the length! I was feeling very unsure about it 😅 thank you for your comment ❤️
I agree with you on the shoes thing, they don't make them like they used to and we need to go back!
Love the skirt and it's so lovely to see your boys playing together and being cute 😊
Should we start some kind of petition?😅 I feel like we could all do with more comfortable (and pretty) heels!
Thank you so much for your comment! ❤
Maybe later the skirt hem to mid knee? Plus perhaps taper side seams a bit to create slightly more tapered peg shape?
that's a good idea! Thank you so much for your comment! ❤️❤️❤️🤗
Darling! Wonderful video! I recently gave my shoes a spa treatment. I used Collonil brand shoe cream in 'multi-colour' which is clear and the Pro Carbon waterproofing spray. I also re-coloured my husband's leather shoes with a tinted cream also from Collonil. All very good and the shoes are much happier and refreshed. I also used Kaps brand which is great, and a family business. I would start with cleaning and treating the leather first. Use sensitive baby wipes for the cleaning or a bar of saddle soap. It's ok if the shoes get a bit wet, the leather probably needs moisture after all these years. If it's not leather then.... clean, colour, and use plastic glue fixative (clear) on the broken pieces.
Good luck!
Oh my goodness! Thank you so so much for your comment! ❤️❤️❤️ I am taking a screenshot and I will try to get my hands on everything you mentioned. I really appreciate your good, honest advice!❤️❤️❤️
Hey freeeennnn! lol Ma'am? Ma'am. That first question. Dangit, I just woke up. It is too early in the morning for this. LMAO! I'm sorry that happened to you, and I also feel bad for the person who did it. lol (big hugs) Girl, the weather has been nuts everywhere. It's insane. 😩 Even though there was skirt drama, it still turned out quite nicely! 😍 The length is perfect, actually! I like! Sending you and the boys lots of hugs and love! 🥰🦊
WINNIE!
🦊 Lengths are so personal. I like them just below he knee, but, sometimes when I see some Dior skirt/dress photos tea length and they look so glamorous and perfect that I want to make all mine longer too 🙈
yay 🙌🏻 Team pencil-square skirt, that's my life too 🤣
do you have any pencil skirt patterns to recommend? 🤩 thank you so much for watching and for your comment!🥳❤️
@@Marlenasewing I have the Stanwyck skirt from Charm Patterns it's one pattern but with tons of options. However, the pencil skirt is like/kind a mermaid cut ( to me 🫣) not great for walking, it has a slit but is closed with another piece of fabric on the back making a pleat, so, you have a little bit of room but not a lot😅
Im not usually a pencil skirt person, but i might have to make this one its ao cute.
Also Winne and Pinky make my heart soar, they are so cute. I want a dog but i dont have the time to give them right now.
Ohhh.. I understand how you feel. The only reason why I could get Winnie now is because 90% of the times when I am at work, my partner is at home. It makes things easier. Plus, our tiny Winnie doesn't require that much time outside, so he is very cost/time effective for us😂 I'll keep my fingers crossed for you ❤️ thank you so much for your comment!
That skirt turned out very cool! 🦊
Thank you so much for your kind comment! ❤️❤️❤️ I really appreciate you being here 🤗
I think taking the darts further down in the front would be nice. The length is a really good length. It looks great on you.
Thank you so much for your comment!🙏❤️
Love your sewing machine ❤
Aww, I am glad you liked it! It was a gift from my partners mom😍🤩
Very nice!👍🏾
Thank you so much for your kind comment! 🤗❤️
I adore pencil skirts. They're just so chique. Yay for using your vintage Singer, very age appropriate for the wardrobe. The fit is perfect. Well done!
- Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
Passing thought on the darts on the front of the skirt. You might have the space to add a second, smaller dart (mirrored to both sides). The inner pair of the original darts is longer than the outer ones... just 'cause it might look kinda cool, lol.
I vote for trying the hem to be a 1/4" higher. See how that affects the swing?
Those shoes are at least from the 1980's, if not a little older. I remember shoes like that. I could walk for miles. We need to bring them back... I'm only really starting out in leatherwork (fell down a sewing-adjacent rabbit-hole during 2nd lockdown...), but, find a good cobbler / Mom & Pop owned shoe repair store. They _should_ be fixable if you bring them in at this point. Fingers crossed.
Scritches to the fuzzy overlords...
Aww, Thank you so much for your comment, Cathy! ❤❤️❤️ I will try making the other pencil skirts a bit shorter, like you advised! Let's see what looks best😀 I shall convey your scritches to both fur monsters🤗❤️❤️❤️
the skirt length is perfect… and the shoes they knew how to make shoes back then. ❤ also have you put leather conditioner on the leather part to give them back their moisture and elasticity?
Thank you so much for your comment!🙏❤️ I am totally clueless about leather, so I really appreciate all the tips. I didn't even know such things as leather moisturisers existed 🙈 I will definitely give it a go!
I love the shoes I have from American Duchess because the heel is sensible and still makes my calves look great and it sits right underneath the heel, rather than the back of my foot. I feel better support and have a easier time walking.
I think the length is just fine- could take it up an inch or too but that may not be worth your time. Your calves look great!
Thank you for letting me know about American Douchess shoes! I might need to give them a go😍 thank you so much for your comment! ❤️
I think it looks very pretty and the length suits you as well :)
I'm so glad you approve of the length! I wasn't sure about it myself. Thank you so much for your comment 😊❤️❤️❤️
My dogs are 1000 times bigger than Winnie but it's the same when I leave. You can hear them from 3 blocks away. It sounds like someone is pulling their tails off. So the solution is that we can't ever leave 😂
The skirt turned out nice despite the hiccups. I like the length too.
haha Awwww! They must be the biggest babies❤️❤️😍 what kind of dogs are they?
Thank you so much for your comment! ❤
@@Marlenasewing they are the biggest babies lol. Thistle is a husky shepherd mix and Maple is a dutch shepherd (I think anyway. They were both rescues and that's what the humane society had them listed as)
Love it! Im on the heavy curve side. 😅 all well
The skirt came out really cute, despite Winnies attempt at ruining it😆 Good call with the darts instead of pleats.
I think the length looks good. I made a pencil skirt recently on my channel and I hem it just below my knee. I think your length is truer to the era and mines a little more on the rockabilly side. So just comes down to preference.
I always enjoy watching your videos and I hope you can go full time soon🤞 I wouldn't wish diarrhea in they eye on my worst enemies🙈
I didn't know you had a chanel! I am going to binge all your videos tonight!!!😍😍😍 I am looking forward to this! 🤩thank you so much for your comment! ❤️
omg you're so sweet🥰 @@Marlenasewing
I am not sure how to repair leather look for a local cobbler/ shoe repair store or leather crafts store as they might be able to help you with repairing any cracks or tears in the leather. For maintaining the leather you’ll want to get some kind of leather lotion to keep it from drying out which is what causes it to crack and tear. Also a good rain and stain protector made for leather shoes would also be recommended as well, as it will help protect the leather from dirt and water stains. I work for a shoe company and learned how to take care of our leather display shoes this way.
Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for sharing all these helpful tips! I really appreciate it🙏😊 thank you so much for your comment ❤️

Love your skirt! Do you have a cobbler? They will keep your shoes going for a long time. Worth the money to have them repaired.
Thank you so much for your comment!❤️ I know one cobbler back in Poland that saved my shoes many a time. I haven't found one yet in Norway... time to fix that! 😅
Ooo, you can learn how to be a cobbler and make your own shoes on the channel too!
now that would be a disaster filled video!😂😂😂 Thank you so much for your kind comment! ❤
@@Marlenasewing I'll be tuned in!
The length. Is good.
Marlena are you eventually planning on upsizing these pattens for your Etsy store? 🥺🙏
Those models were likely padded. Abby Cox just did a video about the Fashion show that featured a lot of that and it was obvious that everyone was padded out to make the silhouette.
Interesting! Thank you so much for your comment! ❤
Great length 😊
Thank you so much, Wolfgang and his hooman🙏❤️❤️❤️
It's so beautiful 🌸
Thank you so much! 😊🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️Cheers!
For your shoes, you will want to treat them with leather moisturizer every other day for two weeks and then follow up with mink oil.
Thank you for the tips! I'll see if I can get my hands on these products ❤️❤️❤️
