Pro tip - you need to keep the roof seals lubricated with a product called Gummi Pflege and ensure all the roof drains are empty and free from debris. That way, you'll ensure your roof keeps water tight and working like new.
    Cheers

We have an EOS. TSI. Kept the seals lubricated and hardly any water ingress. Not a drip in the boot. Looked after they’re great cars. Never an issue with the roof and had it 7 years now. All comes down to looking after the car, it will then look after you. Great video.

Look at the light in the middle boot as the sun eats the plastic , just press it in the middle , but be warned in my fall out , check before it kills the roof ECU and motor £ 2k to put it right .More if VW do it .

It is the same here in Denmark.. These were pretty expensive as new cars and still hold a decent value. So people has and still is, taking good care of them. I have traded 4 of them since 2010, and all of them were just like 98% new cars. ;) Cars in Denmark are much more expensive than in England, so that might be the main reason. A well maintained 2.0 TFSI is still £18k.. A diesel like the one in this video would me £7-7½K :)

Sad to read so many negative stories about the EOS... I have had a 2008 2.0 TDi DSG Sport gor the last 8 yrs and it's been one of the most reliable cars I've ever owned. It's done 123,500 miles always serviced, with a high spec and a roof that has never let me down. It just sailed through its recent MOT as it has done the last few. I live in Devon so the roof is up and down all the time. It drives like it did the day I bought it... I guess I've just been lucky, or maybe I've just looked after mine

Same here. A car will only perform as well as how it’s been taken care of. It seems like the previous owner of the EOS in this video did not maintain it as well. I love my 2009 EOS and maintain it through scheduled maintenance checkups. I have 136,000 miles and it’s going strong so far. I live in the Washington DC area in the US. I was surprised to hear about the common leaks and smells mentioned as I don’t have that issue.

That had a lot of kit for a VW of that era (when the feckin steering wheel was an optional extra). But the usual suspects haunted it, clutch/flywheel, rust coming on and roof not working Definitely no surprises and as the engine and box are good you're right, absolutely one for a DIY guy. Thanks for taking the time to put this content out. You make it funny, punchy and the editing is great.

For me the additional shots seem obviously staged and don't seem to add anything, they just distract me, ah well, I guess you can't please everyone! @@acorndogs904 I agree 100% on your first sentence, my comment wasn't a dig at the video at all, just my preference. I think the trip to France in the Mercedes was brilliant and would have been even better with more technical camera work but one of the things I like about the car reviews like this one is how honest and 'real' they are, I think you lose some of that if you're setting up extra shots which don't really add much.

    • @fastra3621
      @fastra3621 Před rokem +4

hmmm, not so sure - for a start the black point needs adjusting - lots of detail missing in the shadow - 8:18, the camera is outside looking in so the white compensation is out, hence virtually no detail in the shot, and I actually think the resolution/quality/sharpness doesn't look as good either
I actually prefer the one man effort, he'd got quite good at it and it was perfectly presentable and watchable - the single camera point of view was great for showing exactly was he was looking at and talking about - now it seems to be showing more of Matt talking about stuff, rather than showing the stuff he's talking about.
I don't think 'tarting' up the production is needed, it was fine as it was.

I work at a VW dealership and EOSes(?) are notorious for leaks. Hard top convertible with a sunroof...recipe for complications.
The whole functionality is a web of strings (for real part called "string kit").
Any tiny side fender bender can throw the whole convertible system off line.
As a rule the Techs at my dealership don't roll down the windows, open the convertible top or take them thru the car wash

Got a 2.0 Diesel auto 07 plate, use the right stuff on the roof once a year & never a problem, Only time we had any water in the boot was when one of the drain pipes came off soon after we got it. The rubber surround for the roof motor is a poor design though, the lid section is waterproof, the bottom part is porous!. Best thing you can ever do is sit the rubber motor housing in a tinfoil baking tray, easy done & if you ever are unfortunate enough to get a leak, it will keep the motor protected. Would have loved this one for the Xenon's alone, stock lights are so poor in comparison.

My tip for water leaks. The seals can stick against their mating surfaces and enable leaks. The seals from the factory have a long lasting coating applied which allows the seals to slip against their mating surface but often the rubber seals and bodywork have become dusty and dry for lack of attention, they bind and do not seal well. Try partial opening of the roof and clean and apply something like Armor all protectant for vinyl and rubber to the seal and the metal body mating surface. You would be surprised how often this works. Try it on door seals to keep away water which can freeze in Winter making door opening difficult. Try it on tailgates too, especially if there is a leak, which some tailgate profiles are prone to. Remember clean dusty surfaces of the seal and mating surface first then apply protectant with a piece of sponge. It costs little and does a lot of good and may just save a leaking car.

I was thinking similar, I suspect not a lot wrong with the roof mechanism that lubricating and cleaning couldn't sort. Sadly though not so for the rest of the vehicle.

@@drnick1972 The correct lubricant for the seals is Volkswagen VW VAG Group Krytox Roof Rubber Care Oil Lubricant G052172A1 5. I had one of the first EOS's in UK back in 2006, when it rained the water would collect between the doors and the sills and when the door was opened it flooded all over your shoes. VW brought out a mod fo it but never worked on my car.

I’ve got a 2.0 Petrol Auto on a 08, just passed 50k miles with FSH, you need to look after these, the VW lubricant for the seals is over £30 for a tiny tiny bottle and you need to massage it into the rubbers at least 3 times a year, mine is bone dry and root works a treat, and 🤞she’ll run for another couple of years 😂

Its an amazing looking car in good condition, it does leak a bit….. from the pillar on the front right but it’s a great car, quite quick the only bad thing is the fuel economy, which is….. not great but still very happy with it as it is my first car!

Regarding wheel bearing noise, I had a "wheel bearing" noise and had all four bearings replaced.
The noise was still there .... until I changed all four tyres.
The tyres were only a few months old but the tread was "growing" or "contracting" in places making the tyres "knobbly". They were brand new Avon low profiles but the MOT tester picked up on them. No refund from Avon though I might add.

Owned an EOS (in blue not black) and had no end of issues with the TDI. from the dual mass and clutch, failing twice in two months (the first one, I believe was not properly torqued on the flywheel bolts) and MAF sensors (it had 4 in 12 months) two ABS sensors of the front axles (replacements require axles removed)
Finally got rid as the turbo was starting to show signs of issues. Sold it to Trent's for £465 and was happy to get that for it. Spent 6k on the darn thing, and that again on parts and other sundries.
Now have a kia nero EV. No issues at all. Loving ev driving now.
