  • I’ve been a fan of FromSoftware’s games for a few years now, and their next project coming out in just a little over a month is Armored Core 6. The game has had me increasingly interested over the last year, so I figured it was finally time to sit down and see what this was all about by playing the original.
    Full Armored Core Series: • A First Timer's Journe...
    Armored Core is a 1997 third-person shooter mech video game developed by FromSoftware and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation. It was originally released in Japan by FromSoftware in July 1997 and in North America in October 1997 and Europe in 1998 by Sony Computer Entertainment. The game is the first entry in the Armored Core series. A digital port was released in 2007 in Japan and 2015 in North America on the PlayStation Network as a part of the PSone Classics line of games.

  • @mallow2902
    @mallow2902 Před 10 měsíci +5

    It's so funny that the text at the start tells you to survive against "the enemy AC", but you actually fight two MTs, not one AC. Probably a translation error.
    Yeah the controls in the old games are pretty awkward, but it's nice that From Software always provides a remapping feature in the options. Putting Strafing on the D-pad and aiming on the face buttons from AC1 all the way to Silent Line is a godsend. Because of the linear turn speed, button aiming doesn't even feel bad if you remap the controls like that.
    A bit of a bummer that you didn't discover a lot of this game's secrets though like Human Plus and the hidden parts like the Karasawa and Moonlight blade. Those hidden unlockables are a big part of what I love about these games.

    Ah the good old days. Where we didn’t have fancy thumb sticks and had to really git gud. The boss fights were absolutely nuts because you had to beat one of the most advanced enemy AIs of the day with that crazy controller scheme and you could only use one weapon at a time.
    It’s one of my personal achievements to say I beat this game back when it first came out. Where even the controls were fighting you.

  • @Stammer6
    @Stammer6 Před 11 měsíci +44

    AC1 is janky as hell, but it has FromSoftware's DNA all throughout. Its sequels Project Phantasma and (especially) Master of Arena are top-notch games. I don't mind the janky controls because aside from that weird platforming level at the end of the vanilla game, they really do design the game around the controls, and it helps sell the fact that you're piloting a 100-ton walking tank.
    I love each of the Armored Core games for their own reasons, and it's been a favourite franchise of mine for almost a quarter-century at this point. And I'm so glad to see so many people discovering them now that FromSoftware is a household name, and finding the nugget of gold underneath the challenging game design.

      It's also really interesting that when you play Armored Core 4, and get to pilot a "Next", the next generation cutting edge ACs, you're pitted against legions of "Normals" they all move and fight like the clunky moving tanks from the earlier games. Reminder for the early games that it was the era of the instruction booklets, which included the controls. If you started the game without reading the control section of it, then it was on your head. So the players were not just dropped in without the chance to learn how things were played. AC4 would be the first game with an in-game tutorial.

    I think Armored Core 1 is the best in the series, and I dont have nostalgia blinders on because I didnt grow up with it.
    Armored Core 1 seems to have been designed around you being about to play with only 1 gun, and the extra weapons slots are to have variety like a Pulse Rifle, Grenade Launcher, and Missile Launcher(Nine-Ball build).
    It has the best weapons in the series and doesnt have the frequent and frustrating patch features every game after brought in.
    The weapons in particular are amazing. Most of them have absurd amounts of ammunition compared to later games, like a Bazooka with 80 rounds when in a later game that would be down to 30, a Plasma/Laser Cannon with less than 300 weight, but 80 shots and about 1500 power, a Laser/Plasma cannon with 50 shots, a Pulse Rifle with 200 shots and the range of a sniper rifle, etc.
    Its funny that in the first generation their are only 2 Megacorporations and SPOILER WARNING:
    you end up destroying one or both by the end of the game.
    The future Games used a 3+ Megacorp system and never really kill them off.
    The names are themselves funny. Murakumo Millennium...and Chrome. Just Chrome? Its like Leonardo Da Vinchi vs Bob.

      Interestingly despite the PS2 coming up with the twin stick controller first with quite a head start, it was ironically Halo on the XBox that pioneered the actual control scheme. (Unless you count Golden Eye's special control mode, but you had to use two controllers for that.)
      All the early PS2 games pre-Halo, were still following tradition and using awkward tank like controls or other schemes, even despite having both joysticks right there to use.

    L1 = switch weapon

    Not sure if it was called out, but you forgot to mention that there are REVERSE Bi-pedal legs in addition to the normal Bi-peds, quads, and tank treads. So far, AC6 is matching this offering, even though AC2 had added the 5th leg type, hovers -AC6 simply decided to change up quadruped legs so that they can hover in the air.
    As you caught on on your Project Phantasma video, you need to go -50,000 in debt in AC1 to get a Human Plus enhancement. A singular enhancement. There are 3 enhancement levels IIRC, but you need to do it 6 times to get the full effects. The thing to keep in mind is that you need high cost ammo and/or high cost armor to make getting into debt easier -and you can use this trick up to a certain point, before your failures just lead to GAME OVER screens -so you can build up money to a point in parts, use up all your funds buying parts, go into -50k, the game resets progress but you get H+ and keep all your prior earned parts, thus you can exploit your credit games between each reset to slowly buy out the entire shop of its parts offerings.
    AC2 rekindled Human Plus, so it is important to take note on exploiting the H+ system in AC1 when you get to AC2 (which you already did, but I'm only on your Project Phantasma video as of this comment). Just like with gen 1, AC2 is the only title that offers access to Human Plus in its generation -so to have it in AC2: Another Age, requires a fully Human Plus enhanced AC2 file.
    It is possible to only partially unlock the Human Plus abilities, due to the order in which they are unlocked, should one decide to stop at only unlocking them up to a certain point.
    In AC1 the 3 levels are (per SteveO_528 on GameFaqs who tried to correct erroneously reported information with correct info from the Japanese fanbase):
    Human Plus Lv.1: Undergo the enhancement process once.
    *Automatic grid-type radar installed. (5120 range, missile detection enabled) (no other radar features are included, IIRC the refresh rate of the radar data is instant/live)
    *Energy waves can be fired from the sword by holding Jump at the right time.
    Human Plus Lv.2: Undergo the enhancement process four times.
    *Shoulder weapons that require you to kneel can be used while moving.
    Human Plus Lv.3: Undergo the enhancement process six times.
    *Boosting consumes 50% of the normal amount of energy. (Incorrectly listed in a strategy guide as doubling your generator's energy capacity)

    Frankly, I found the controls to be a good solution to not have dual sticks at the time. Once you get used to it, they do the job quite well.

    Ahhhhhh good old days.
    I remember when ac 4 came out and we finally used the joysticks to play.
    I loved every entry except V and VD.
    I was a hardcore aerial player. Loosing flight was like trying to play with 1 hand.
    The fact flights back has me drooling to get in an ac again.
    There was a decent ac fanbase in my town so I had quite a few people to play against.
    At first everyone had their own style, but eventually everyone gravitated to being an aerial player and our matches became so intense. I can't imagine how hardcore competition is going to be online for this game.
    I can already see my 17 yo self busting out the calculator and notepads to squeeze every bit of mobility out of my builds.

    My friend you can rebind the controls, putting the aim controls on the right face buttons. Hope this helps in future games if you try more of the oldies. Especially important with the introduction of left-hand weapons, otherwise you'll be claw gaming. Cheers!

    The controls only take an absurd amount of time if you didn't grow up playing them. My group of friends didn't even use analog controls for the later games because it felt weird coming from a history of using the classic scheme. The classic controls really aren't difficult.

      That's something people don't realize. The modern "right analog nub does translation, the left analog nub does rotation" was not the obvious correct solution.
      In fact, there's a hilarious-in-hindsight review of the PS1 Alien Resurrection game still up on GameSpot complaining about how terrible the controls are because the left analog nub on a dual shock makes you move forward and back as well as strafe left and right, and the right analog nub looks up and down as well as turning your character. They actually called this the game's "most terrifying element"
      Armored Core's controls are actually pretty reasonable for the time frame.
      Also: I find it funny that Resident Evil fans successfully redefined tank controls from "uuuuuugh why is Leon so slooooooooooooooow" to "you move foward and turn with the same control".

    TBF the controls are re-mapable, a lot of people re-map them so the face buttons are for camera control- or if you know what you're doing, on an emulator you can map the analog sticks to the d-pad & face buttons and _then_ do that. That's what I did. It's still digital camera control (gotta have that turn speed stat) but significantly easier to get used to.
    And I wouldn't say it makes you "work" for whatever story is there like some of their games do- it's all handed to you on a silver platter, you just need to, y'know, read.
    Nice Samus AC btw, and the lanky-legged AA gun build you make is kind of hilarious somehow

  • @KergarinAerospace
    @KergarinAerospace Před 11 měsíci +2

    Just equip the dual gatling gun arms an switch to first person view. The problem ist not nineball beeing overpowered, the problem is you can't git him because the 3rd person camera does not work in that tight tube. Also you need to boost only 2 times to reach the top of the room with all the boxes, just use the most efficient boosters and the highest charge generator. With human plus you can fly up in one single boost.

  • @hollowtongue

    The controls really aren't that bad once you get used to em. Of course I'm older so maybe I'm biased, I played the demo of this game when it was brand new, granted I was like 5. But once you play it for a while it honestly starts feeling comfy you just have to rewire your brain a bit. It's a good practice.

Later on I bought the game, but never finished it, because it was hard af. I played some of the other entries on PS2 and Xbox360, but they didn't hit home the same way for me. I learned many years later that these games were actually made by Fromsoftware, which was a funny thing, since I've been a massive fan of their Souls games since Demon Souls back on PS3. **sidenote, I think the janky controls of these games is what makes them unique, just like the original RE games with the tank controls, it's part of the experience and learning curve.

    You have no idea how frustrating it is to see current FROM fans play these games and go "Oh look at all these things we love about FROM games, showing up even way back then." Because back in the day, reviewers by and large HATED these games. Especially the ones who preferred Western of Japanese games. They. Eviscerated. Armored Core. G4 TV outright mocked it on more than one occasion.
    I guess I'm just glad people like this kind of stuff now. But to see FROM being loved for all the things this franchise couldn't get off the ground because it was hated on for.. Man, it sucks. To know we went a decade with no new games because AC was just ahead of its time.
    Also, fuck poison levels. Yeah they're in all the AC games almost. They're always awful. Also, glad you hated the platform level. So did literally everyone else. I do want to point out that you can't 100% the game if you don't take out Nineball properly, if I recall. So, once you feel more competent, go back and give it another shot.
    I also want to point out that in this era, ALL games like that had similar controls. I often cite Mega Man Legends, which is famous for how much of a beloved cult classic it is. Armored Core gets its reputation because many of its fans on boarded during AC4, which was dual stick. So when they went back to play the old games they got the shock of the old controls. This is also where the Armored Core Grip meme comes from, because to fuck with the newer players we basically lied to them about how we had to play. So, try not to be too harsh about the controls. That was just gaming during that era and we had to deal with it across the board until hardware tech caught up.
    It's too late for me though. The muscle memory is so ingrained I have to adjust the controls to use the old shoulder-strafe and trigger-look to play AC still. When I tried to help others on their saves, I often couldn't accomplish the difficult task they were struggling with because I couldn't adapt to their more modern control scheme. And it's looking like I'll have to do the same for AC6!

  • @jameslewis3793
    @jameslewis3793 Před 11 měsíci +2

    Original control scheme wasn't bad. Just needed to learn to use your index and middle finger. You actually have to learn to pilot the AC. It's not handed to you. But I guess when a game is truly hard, people just call it bad.

I do enjoy watching people who have never heard of Armored Core have no idea what they are getting into when they try the game. To be fair I am a veteran Armored Core player while I never played all 15 I have played about half of them. While this comment seems a bit condescending I don't mean it that way I am really hoping ACVI can finally bring this game series to the mainstream audience it deserves to stand side by side with From Software's soulsborne games even if it's a different beast all together.

    Try AC For Answer if you can. I haven't played it but for me I think that being able to is a luxury. Since I only played old gen. Don't play AC Formula Front unless you have tried other gens of AC. Other people might think it is a weird weird but for me it is a good weird. The original JP umd version of AC FF don't have manual mode and you can only program your AI AC. In US version, you can choose to let the AI play the AC or you manually control your AC. Also I think that AC controls clicked to me just fine and Tenchu for PS1 got more harder controls in terms of camera or movement. But I just retried AC Last Raven which I thought wasn't hard as a kid but with keyboard and mouse it is quite tough but still somewhat fun. I got used to AC FF where all parts are unlocked from the very start so the price spike of parts is something in AC LR. Also unlike 4th gen AC, the speed in AC LR and old gen is like a nerf and the only time you can enjoy nice control is with a lighter build and choosing weapons that just got enough ammo which is a shift since I am mostly medium build user and normal legs.
