    Here's a quick video on how to replace OR upgrade your Dell G5/G7 screen. I choose to upgrade from 60Hz to 120Hz. This particular panel also have better color and accuracy over the stock Dell screen.
    All you need is a small phillips screwdriver and a smooth butterknife. Very easy to do, even if you have no experience it only takes 10-20 minutes!
    Great upgrade especially when you undervolt your CPU and overclock your GPU. Makes a world of difference when gaming.
    Please like and subscribe if you enjoyed the video!
    UPDATE: This even works with the Dell G3. The frame is a tad different, but same exact method to get off and replace!

    My sister bought this notebook about 15 months ago. Suddenly the display wouldn't turn on. She called Dell Tech Support and related the problem. They gave her a $215 quote to replace the screen, saying that it was for sure dead and nothing she can do about it. And since it was over 1 year (warranty period) there was nothing they could do to help.
    I told her that it was most likely the cable that had slipped. Watched this video to make sure I knew how to open (thank you!) and lo and behold, problem fixed. The cable was loose. Cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol, pushed it back and we're back in business.
    I don't know how Dell's experience has been for other people but I'm pretty sure this is not how it's supposed to be done.
    Thanks Alexander! Your video was very helpful.

    Just want to say that your video single handedly helped me repair my broken screen for so much less than quotes by technicians in my area and dell themselves. I was too scared to do it myself until I saw this and the new screen I ordered was way better than stock at a much better price. Thank you!!

I have never really done any major repairs to a computer but your simple and to the point video gave me the confidence to easily do it. I was shocked how easy it was and your video made it nice and easy with clear instructions. Huge difference in screen quality and now i love the G5. Hopefully others will be willing to try the upgrade since it is surprisingly very easy and definitely improved the computer.

      I would love too, but I am not sponsored so I would have to pay out of pocket for dozens of sticks of RAM which would be hundreds if not thousands of my own money. Sorry!
      I have also read about some of the RAM compatiblity issues mainly due to Dell's lack of support for XMP RAM (which majority are XMP-enabled).
      It seems you need to buy non-XMP RAM and it will be fine. Otherwise, Dell needs to issue a new BIOS update to fix that compatibility issue.

      I see, that's understandable. What about the viewing angles of this particular panel? I've done some research and I can see some people say that the eDP tech that this panel uses has poorer viewing angles than IPS.
      I'd be willing to pay more if you can point me towards an equally compatible screen with higher spec and brightness.

    • @gibby231
      @gibby231  Před 6 lety

      Typically yes, this is a TN panel (eDP signal interface) and has a viewing angle of 85/85/60/60 (left/right/up/down).
      IPS panels typically have much much better viewing angles and color accuracy. The stock Dell IPS panel is a pretty low quality panel, though. The Dell IPS viewing angles are 85/85/85/85, so only better on up/down.
      The major point is color. The panel I replaced with has 16.7M colors where the stock dell has 242k colors (94% vs 72% CIE1931)

    sweet video. receieved my dell g5 with a broken screen. dark spot all the way up from the middle. was pretty disappointed with that considering the price I paid for it from dell. also too 3 weeks to receive. called dell and they originally wanted me to send it into them to fix. I said no way your sending me a new laptop. they agreed to but wanted me to send it back first. after contemplating weather I even want to deal with that and the wait time I decided to research options. after research I became very displeased with the brightness and color depth and went ahead and ordered this screen. I cant wait for it to arrive. I got so excited I decided to take the Bessel off to see how hard it would be. no need for a butter knife or anything to pry it off. I was able to use my finger nails and remove it really quick and carefully without breaking anything. I reseated the ribbon cable to see if that fixed the issue no such luck. oh well I have a nice upgrade coming and I wont have to deal with dell and a long wait time to be gaming the way I want to soon. ill repost my conclusions after I receive the screen and install it.
    update.
    Took 5 days to get here. Install was a complete breeze. This time though when I popped the housing off I noticed a couple tabs chipped a bit. didn't affect putting it back on at all. its , as if it never came off. Now when it comes to the screen quality. What a difference this made to me! Maybe its because I have been dealing with a dim part of the screen but wow this thing pops now with color! I ran a color calibration through the windows 10 settings and started up final fantasy 14 online to test the colors . Amazing how rich the colors are now. Its complete eye candy. Almost no glare to the screen as well. I am completely satisfied now with this laptop. I am thankful this video was posted and glad I went off and added this screen. Props to you Alex for doing the homework and posting this video! Thanks!

    Found this at just the right time. I'm finding my Inspiron 7567 IPS panel hard to see even at highest brightness in games with dark areas to an unplayable level. Does this TN panel warrant the upgrade despite it being a TN panel? The fact that this is 120Hz however is tempting. Thanks for uploading regardless, this is exactly what I needed.

    • @gibby231
      @gibby231  Před 6 lety +3

      This panel is a complete upgrade. I would argue it's the best upgrade you could get your laptop right now (other than an SSD if you don't have one for Windows and a few programs). It's brighter, colors are extremely more vivid and accurate, the response time is 2ms (rather than 25!) and of course, it's 120Hz so text, scrolling, web browsing and gaming are all much smoother.
      I was surprised at how extremely simple it was to replace.

    • @gibby231

      You're right I did not demonstrate it, however, it does work for my panel. This same panel should work on replacing all 60Hz panels with a 30 pin connector. It can not replace the 4k panel because it uses a different connector.
      As long as you get the specific model I used, I cannot see why it wouldn't work perfectly.
      This panel is 94% NTSC and 300 cd/m² brightness. Check this link out for more in depth specs: www.panelook.com/N156HHE-GA1_Innolux_15.6_LCM_overview_33306.html

Its just black with the occasional flicker of a distorted image of the desktop. The ribbon cable is fine as the stock one works when I put it back in. Extremely frustrating. Is this what happened to the screens that you received that weren't working? Or is this potentially a weird driver issue for upgrading a 60hz screen to 120? I updated my intel and nvidia drivers.

      I tested the display and it works on the 7567 but the it’s kinda defective because it’s getting a red vertical line and it even shows it on the bios screen, I’m gonna have to replace it

    Hi alex, would you kindly check does the new screen using pwm to control brightness? We know that the stock screen doesn't use pwm right? At least based on notebookcheck.net review.
    So does the new screen change the use/no use of pwm?
    Thanks for the info.

    Guys, anybody, does your G5 get hot as hell, particularly i7 8750h combined with 1060? Ignoring the temps, the area between FN keys and hinge is burning. Is it common due to the way the chassis is built? Thanks for any response.

      Try putting your G5 on a stand or something to lift it up so it can pull more air, my G5 has never gone over 80 celsius with the same spec you are rocking. (though I have never updated the bios because people have said that it can mess with your cooling)
