  • Check out this super fun warm-up drill that's super easy to set up and you can start doing with your players today! This warm-up drill takes the classic game of tic-tac-toe and turns it into a fun warm-up relay competition.
    Set Up
Set up a tic-tac-toe grid with sticks as shown in the video (you can use cones for the grid). About 10-15 meters away from the tic-tac-toe grid place two cones for players to line up at. Give the first 3 players in each line the cones that they can place on the tic-tac-toe grid. The two lines need to have different color cones to identify the teams.
Variation 1: Tic-Tac-Toe without the ball. The first player in each line runs down to the tic-tac-toe grid and places their cone. The first player then runs back and tags the next player in line who runs down to put their cone in the grid. The objective is for one team to get 3 cones in a row. Once a team has all 3 cones in play, the players who run down must move one of their team’s cones that is already on the grid to a new location. The game goes on until one of the teams wins.
Variation 2: Tic-Tac-Toe while dribbling the soccer ball. On the go signal, the first player in each line dribbles the ball to the grid and stops the soccer ball beside the grid, on the line between the 2 cones, before placing the cone in one of the squares. On the way back the player must dribble the ball to the next player in line, who does the same as the first player. The objective is for one team to get 3 cones in a row. Once a team has all 3 cones in play, the players who run down must move one of their team’s cones that is already on the grid to a new location. The game goes on until one of the teams wins.
Variation 3: Tic-Tac-Toe while dribbling and passing the soccer ball. On the go signal, the first player in each line dribbles the ball to the grid and stops the soccer ball beside the grid, on the line between the 2 cones, before placing the cone in one of the squares. On the way back the player must pass the ball to the next player in line, who does the same as the first player. The objective is for one team to get 3 cones in a row. Once a team has all 3 cones in play, the players who run down must move one of their team’s cones that is already on the grid to a new location. The game goes on until one of the teams wins.
    Coaching Points
    1. Awareness: As a player you need to be aware all the time of what’s going on in the game. See the grid while dribbling up the field and before you make your decision.
    2. Decision Making: Before getting down to the grid, the player should have an idea where he is going to place the cone.
    3. Ball control under pressure: Keep the ball close to you while dribbling and stopping the ball on the side of the grid.
    4. Accurate passing: Perform a quality pass to the player waiting on the line so he can have a smooth start.
    5. Pressure: This is a race! So, everything needs to be done at a high speed and under pressure!
    Enjoy!
