I just bought this truck...I can't believe how many people are bashing this truck. Saying it is still outdated. I completely disagree, it's a pickup truck, not a sports car. I looked at tacomas, canyons, and rangers. All good trucks, but the Nissan remains a simple honest truck, I love it.
I can admit that it didn't bring anything new or revolutionary to the table. It's exactly what you said, a simple honest truck, and a great driving one at that.
Couldn't agree more. I bought mine in January and have zero regrets. The interior is ergonomically correct, seats are super comfy. Only complaint is the stereo is lacking high frequency sounds. Lots of bass with the Fender system but no top end. Its the right truck at the right time IMO.
most of the people complaining don’t use trucks for what they’re intended for. They are mall crawlers for most of these clowns that want and the useless bells and whistles
Really thankful to have found your channel. Have learned a lot not only about the newer crop of vehicles, but about 4-wheeling in general. Keep up the excellent work.
I got this exact truck in glacier white in Sept and I freakin love it. Great daily driver and as your video shows, more than capable for the occasional weekend off roader like myself. Got my 2.5 inch lift on the way and will keep those nice wheels with some 275/70/17 Falken AT3’s. Love your review and you just reiterated what I’ve been saying about this truck.
Excellent review! I just ordered this exact Frontier and can’t wait to get it. I’ve had three of the previous generation Frontiers and had no issues. Last one was a Pro 4X and it was awesome! Only thing that was bothersome was the gas consumption as it was thirsty. Hopefully they’ve improved this however not a game changer. Keep up the great work!
Ive had this truck for a few months now (with tow package and rock rail slides) and I love it. Taken me and friends to a few remote huntin spots and performed well in 4WD.
Love that color. It seems that Nissan’s well on their way to making a comeback according to many people. Was talking to my local dealer and they said that they can’t keep Pathfinders on the lot. The Frontier seems like a good choice. I also think you hit the nail on the head with it being a good powertrain. The Tacoma 3.5 has been a disappointment since it replaced the fantastic 4.0.
The new Pathfinder is a great vehicle, and I've always enjoyed the Frontier and Titan. I too was disappointed with the Tacoma's on road driving characteristics, offroad they are great, on road they are awful.
@@EngineAdventures This is exactly why I went for the 2022 Frontier Pro-4X, I had a TRD Pro lined up and ready to buy, took it for an extended test drive, it feels sluggish on the road and even worse with a trailer... the Frontier might not be the BEST offroader, but it's good enough for my needs and it feels a lot more stable and responsive on the road, and hauling my 7x22 7000lb gvwr trailer that I use for my landscaping business, even when it's fully loaded down (I do use a weight distribution hitch though).
Thanks for sharing your experience with it. I should be getting a 2023 to test before too much longer and I will actually be doing a towing test with it (this one didn't have a receiver).
I agree, wholeheartedly. It’s a truck, not an iPhone. I need it to carry stuff while navigating difficult terrain, not provide lane assist while it cooks me a steak.
Great review. I found it better and more thorough than some of the more popular channels. My only concern is reliability with Nissan as I debate between this and a Tacoma OR. Also, I'm disappointed the PRO4X doesn't have much of a lift at all even with the Bilsteins.
Thanks for the support! Yeah even the Tacoma TRD Pro isn't lifted much, but those fox shocks are pretty amazing. With both the trans and engine being new there is always a risk on longevity, only time will tell, but my guess is it will last with proper maintenance.
Love this truck. But one thing I don't understand is that front skid plate with the "shovel" lip. Seems like that will just dig straight into a hill instead of deflecting or gliding over. I would think they would design a backward overlap so nothing gets caught. Or just no gap at all.
Yeah, it curves down around some other components giving it the scoop shape. I agree with you though, I think they could have done a little better with the design.
That's for sure, I feel like they are often overlooked because of their lack of tech and gadgets when compared to others, I like that simplicity though!
Great review. Thanks for being so real. Love this truck but I think I'm gonna get the Titan Pro-4x for the towing I'll be doing. I wish it had more power and could tow more. I love the size and design of the new Frontier. Love it.
The Frontier and Titan both get overlooked, but both are great trucks and have similar ABLS settings. I'd say Nissan nailed the brake based traction systems on these vehicles.
Just discovered your channel and it’s great. Very informative. Love the looks of the truck. Love the 4wd graphic on the dash. Pretty cool. Seems a little less capable than the taco which I love. Great button layout too! I love how the trac control and diff lock buttons and whatever those other were are down so low. I love having to stop and open the door to press the buttons. Maybe on the 2023s they can relocate them down near the hood release😂
@@EngineAdventures I’ve taken one for a test drive a couple times and it fits my needs just about perfect. Full size trucks have gotten insanely big, not for me. I like how the specs and dimensions aren’t far off the 1/2 tons from 20 years ago, much easier for day to day use.
I see you cracked the windshield with the defroster. Did that twice on my wife's minivan visiting Colorado! Don't try to defrost 4 inches of snow! Good video though! By the way the front skid plate is aluminum. Tested mine just now with a magnet to be sure after you said it was steel
Thanks for the skid plate tip. Yeah the chip was down on the black part so o didn't see it. No snow or ice that week, but I'm sure running the heater caused the crack to spread quick!
Just discovered your channel and love it. Very informative. Definitely like the looks of the truck in the four-wheel-drive graphic on the dash is pretty cool too. Seems a little less capable than the Tacoma though. Also I really love the traction control and diff lock buttons and whatever those other buttons are down where they put them. I love having to stop and open the door to activate things. Maybe on the 2023 models they can move them down near the hood release. That would be awesome 😂
Haha, it's not too bad to see from the driver's seat as long as you know where to look. I'd say the Tacoma is more capable off-road, but not nearly as well mannered on road. Thanks for watching and commenting! The comments really help with CZcams algorithm.
Just an FYI, just because the headlights are wired to be on at the same time doesn't make the fog-lights into "driving lights". Mounting location and beam pattern are the things which will differentiate between the two. Also due to regulation (DOT or NHTSA, I believe) fog lights are wired to turn-off when a vehicle's high-beams are actuated. I don't know if the regulations mandate whether the regular low beams must be on or not, however, it seems all factory installations are being designed, wired, and delivered this way. This isn't to say people aren't self-wiring up aftermarket lights, whether fog or driving lights, anyway they want especially if hard-wiring a relatively simple switch and relay set-up. If any company is delivering fog lights which can be turned on without the headlights on at the same time, do let us know. I can see the utility of this as I've been in very thick fog where that might have been of benefit and like that idea the more I think about it. Otherwise, thanks for the review and as a current '17 Tacoma owner, I could be swayed over to this new Pro4X should I get another truck.
Thanks for watching and commenting! There are many manufacturers that allow the fog lights to be on with just the running/parking lights on. Forcing the headlights to be on with the fog lights negates te effectiveness of the fog lights because the headlights will reflect off the fog/snow and limit visibility. I drove through a blizzard in a vehicle that required the headlights to be on for the fog lights to be on. It was easier to see with just the parking lights on than with the headlight/fog light combo. However, I couldn't drive like that due to other vehicles potentially not being able to see me. I think there are states with laws that require the headlights to be on with the fog lights, but practically speaking it doesn't make sense.
I can easily reach into the bed on my 2017 SV 4x4. Can't do that with the ranger. But then again I use mine as a work truck every day. Tacomas are my favorite looking midsized but everything else is better on the Frontier which looks sharp too
Is this that area on the southeast side of Provo on the hillside? I love going there. Have a 2022 Pro-4X on order. Should be here by March or April! I'm in Pleasant Grove myself. Maybe I'll see you out and about in the summer time!
That's actually one thing I really like about the Frontier, it's so basic. However the Crawl Control and Select Speed are both very capable systems and work excellent for certain situations!

It's actually not very impressive for a 2022. It's pretty basic. The 2016 tacoma has a better system and it came out 6 years ago. With that being said, it's good enough and probably all you will ever need. Looks like a nice truck so far.
Land Rover had this type of system in the late 90's. Toyota's Atrac came out in the early 2000's, jeep, Nissan, and most others followed by the mid to late 2000's. Yes ABLS is not new, but it works very well, I'd say even better than most others. Unlike Toyota and Ford, there aren't a plethora of settings that really don't make a huge difference. In the Frontier, 4wd high allows for more wheel slip and less braking action for sand, mud, and snow. 4wd low is very quick to brake the spinning wheels for slow speed, precise movements. It's a great system overall.
@@EngineAdventures I own a 2019 trd sport and it does exactly the same thing As atrac, but I also own a 2016 trd off road and the trd off road has a completely different brake system, even the brake booster is different and has higher pressure over a traditional atrac and whatever nissan uses. So basically it can brake the system harder and better. Also the modes do make a difference , for example in sand and mud it allows more slippage but still distributes power to the wheel with traction. The traditional system in the trd sport or nissas won't let it slip enough and you basically have to turn off the traction control or you get stuck. So basically the modes in some scenarios will make a difference but if you know what you are doing it doesn't really matter. Either way the 2016 trd off road is a better 4x4 system than the nissan. Crawl control while mostly a gimmick has been very helpful in a couple scenarios. With that being said you don't need it lol.
Yeah I've got a video of a 2020 Tacoma TRD Pro up on this channel. I'm sure the system works well, and my guess is the oversized brake components are for the support aggressive crawl control. I'd prefer the terrain modes to have almost no brake limited slip in sand mode, but it was still fairly aggressive. I appreciate your experience and I hope you have a wonderful holiday season!
Would you take this over a Gladiator Rubicon with the V6? I currently have the 2020 Frontier with the old body but new power train. Wondering if it would be worth trading in for the "redesign" or going for a Gladiator. Thanks for the great content!
I feel like they are very different vehicles. The Gladiator is a little bit bigger all around and it feels and drives like it. I haven't driven the V6 gladiator, only the Eco-diesel, but I really enjoyed it as well. All 3 (you're current Frontier included) are great trucks and I think it just comes down to personal preference. See if you can test drive a Gladiator and a new Frontier back to back to see which one you prefer.
im on the brink of getting one but i think ill go for the Ranger Tremor as its cheaper and WAYWAYWAY better off-road. i currently have a 2021 Colorado Z71 and i genuinely believe that it would do better off road than the Pro 4-x
The Colorado Z71 is about the same, except I prefer an e-locket over the G80. Ranger Tremor is a little smoother at higher speeds, but as far as getting through tougher locations, the Tremor and Pro-4x are about the same. I also prefer the power train on the Frontier over any other mid-size truck (except maybe the diesel Gladiator, but that is kind of in a class of its own).
Nissan and others need to have some of those systems turned off when in 4 high. My 2002 Frontier would have coasted up that hill. I do like the 2022 Frontier.
Unless your 2002 is modified I don't think it would have made it up the hard line. If I remember correctly Nissan added ABLS in 2005, also I believe they added the optional rear locker in the D40, 2005 range (might have been available earlier, but not that I know of). This hill is steeper and the ruts are deeper than they look on camera.
@@EngineAdventures Truck was used for driving utility access roads in the mountains and to go up ski runs in Mt Baldy. Truck was a tank. And was the supercharged model. I do love all the real world off road driving that is done on CZcams now. Seeing channels like yours and others really help with making a choice. I'm looking at the Pro-4x, but waiting to see how bad Toyota screws up the 4Runner. The Pathfinder was nice when it competed with the 4Runner, but now it competes with the Highlander.
@@EngineAdventures the frontier has a front limited slip dif which most trucks don’t have so with a rear locker and that limited slip up front it does improve the off road ability of the truck over others that don’t have a front limited slip or front locker and just the rear locker
As far as I know the front is a brake based limited slip or ABLS as Nissan calls it. Many manufacturers use brake based limited slip differentials as the hardware is already there from the ABS, just needs some software.
Personally I'm not a midsize truck fan, but if the Frontier is the right size for you, then it's an excellent vehicle! If take it over the Tacoma for everything but constant off-roading.
@@EngineAdventures we have F-150 now and want to add something smaller for the trails in the woods. Might have to wit and see what the new Ranger is gonna be all about.
I'm pretty sure it's in the same location on the top of the axle tube as the previous generation. However with it being new, I wasn't too worried about it having a faulty valve and letting water in.
I don't feel like either came up short. This climb is harder than it looks on camera, and I've had some pretty aggressive tires just tear up the hill more. Putting the truck in 4wd low and locking the rear made the climb pretty easy.
I recently purchased same model pro4x luxury in boulder grey. I am worried about long term reliability of vq3.8dd engine. I have heard it is direct injection and not multi port fuel injection. I am worried about carbon buildup in cylinder heads and valves. I am thinking did I made the right decision and worried about the overall brand image of Nissan at the moment. few disappointments no lumbar support and no passenger side automatic seat adjustments. no wireless apple car play, no telescopic steering. few positives, great looks, comfortable seating, good fender sound, wireless charging, leather seats and sunroof. smooth 9 speed automatic transmission.
@@demondavejeep Fuel injector cleaner won't help clean valves on DI only engines. The only way to clean them is to take the engine apart and walnut blast them.
Naw because the injectors are straight into the cylinder, the fuel never touches the valves. You can do a spray type cleaner into the air intake or vacuum line though.
I'm more of a tall skinny tire guy, I'd prefer a 255/80r17, to a 285/70r17 or 285/75r17 all are roughly the same height, but about the 255s are an inch skinnier. Stock tires aren't too bad on this thing though.
The fleet managers/manufacturers are really good at keeping these vehicles in top shape. However, I took a rock on the freeway and within two days the chip had spread all the way across. Big temperature swings between day and night helped it out I'm sure.
Yeah, that one took a rock down in the black part on the edge of the windshield. I looked for the chip and couldn't see it. The next day it cracked about half way across the windshield.
@@EngineAdventures 34.5 is the top on my wheel wells front and back. I haven't done anything too it yet. Came with a factory level suspension even though I got the towing package
It got chipped the first day I drove it, and the crack spread very quickly. The fleet managers/manufacturers do a really good job of keeping these things in top shape, but stuff happens sometimes.
Took a rock from a truck on the freeway, it cracked about half way across by the next morning, and all the way by the next day. I heard the hit on the glass, but didn't see the chip.
It's a media truck, Nissan and the fleet managers do a great job of maintaining the vehicles, but of course when it happens this fast there's nothing they can do.
I was doing the typical mid-sized truck comparison and wish to get as much for my money. Looking for a mix of both on-road and off-road capability for under $40k. Narrowed down between the base Frontier Pro 4X and Tacoma Trail Edition. Both have rear lockers and are $39k.
Yeah, they do a really good job of keeping the media vehicles in great condition, but it went from a tiny chip to a full crack in one day during the week I had it. Cold nights and fairly warm days will make the cracks grow really fast.
@@EngineAdventures That is what I thought. I love your channel bro. I told you in the past that I subscribed because how consistent you do your test from different angles, from the inside, the outside, the 4L, 4H, Locker, traction on/off, the angle of approach, the departure etc. You make thinks very easy to understand. It helps us on the other side of the screen make an easier decision. I have been watching a few of your videos lately because I am again looking to get another midsize truck and your information is very helpful. Keep up the good work.
As far as my testing goes different tires would have made no difference at all. Yes having the correct tires for the terrain you are on is very important, however my steep hill climb test is more about how well the vehicle transfers power to the wheels with traction.

Good grief what camera are you using? So clear !
Haha thanks, it's just a go pro hero 7 and a Hero 9
Someome told me that ABLS is still working even on 2WD.. but looks like it’s not
I think it does, it's just not aggressive at all in 2wd. In 4wd low it's very aggressive and easier to notice.
Stupid question but is there way to change that off road setting mine is at 2wd but it still says off road.
Don't know the answer to that, sorry.
Truck looks awesome, wish the 4ProX would come with front lockers and manual transmission.
I agree, especially with the manual transmission, but not enough people buy them to make them worth the R&D cost in the U.S.
Are those cracks in the windshield I'm seeing?
Yup, big rock chip, which spread within about a day.
@@EngineAdventures Wow, that's gotta sting in a new vehicle
Not mine, it was part of Nissan's media fleet. Still sucks though.
I am really thinking about getting the new PRO-4X
Personally I'm not a midsize truck fan, but if the Frontier is the right size for you, then it's an excellent vehicle! If take it over the Tacoma for everything but constant off-roading.
@@EngineAdventures we have F-150 now and want to add something smaller for the trails in the woods. Might have to wit and see what the new Ranger is gonna be all about.
Does the diff breather exhaust in the wheel well or still on the different like the old Pro 4X
I'm pretty sure it's in the same location on the top of the axle tube as the previous generation. However with it being new, I wasn't too worried about it having a faulty valve and letting water in.
Great review!
Thanks for the support!
the tires come up short i think not the four wheel drive
Thanks for sharing!
It does have lumbar support on the driver seat. There is a little lever on your right side. Pull that down and you are gtg.
Catch can. Oil change 3-4K miles should be fine
Try regular Frontier
If I get the chance I will!
it needs some 285 nitto trail grapplers on there
I'm more of a tall skinny tire guy, I'd prefer a 255/80r17, to a 285/70r17 or 285/75r17 all are roughly the same height, but about the 255s are an inch skinnier. Stock tires aren't too bad on this thing though.
Looks like the windshield is cracked?
yup took a rock where I couldn't see the chip and it cracked within a couple of days.
Is that front windshield cracked ?
The fleet managers/manufacturers are really good at keeping these vehicles in top shape. However, I took a rock on the freeway and within two days the chip had spread all the way across. Big temperature swings between day and night helped it out I'm sure.
What happened to the windshield?
Yeah, that one took a rock down in the black part on the edge of the windshield. I looked for the chip and couldn't see it. The next day it cracked about half way across the windshield.
Think I'll be able to fit 285/70r17 on stock height. 34.5 front and 34.5 back
What do you mean by 34.5 front and 34.5 back? The 285/70R17s are about a 32.5" tire and I think they would probably fit no problem.
@@EngineAdventures 34.5 is the top on my wheel wells front and back. I haven't done anything too it yet. Came with a factory level suspension even though I got the towing package
Sounds like a nice truck, I'm sure the 285/70r17's will fit just fine.
@@EngineAdventures its the 22 frontier. In love with it. Took a while to pull the trigger on a set of tires and wheels. Super excited to get them on
Is that windshield CRACKED?????
Yup
Is the windshield cracked?
Yup
Is it just me or is your windshield cracked?
It got chipped the first day I drove it, and the crack spread very quickly. The fleet managers/manufacturers do a really good job of keeping these things in top shape, but stuff happens sometimes.
Cracked windshield already?
Yup, chip in the black i didn't see and then it cracked within a couple days.
That windshield cracked already? What happened?
Took a rock from a truck on the freeway, it cracked about half way across by the next morning, and all the way by the next day. I heard the hit on the glass, but didn't see the chip.
@@EngineAdventures man that sucks.
It's a media truck, Nissan and the fleet managers do a great job of maintaining the vehicles, but of course when it happens this fast there's nothing they can do.
@@EngineAdventures good thing its not yours huh? 🤣
Convinced me, but that price is a killer, that goes for the Tacoma too. I’ll hav ta wait awhile I guess. Nice review, thanks
Thanks for watching and for the support!
I was doing the typical mid-sized truck comparison and wish to get as much for my money. Looking for a mix of both on-road and off-road capability for under $40k. Narrowed down between the base Frontier Pro 4X and Tacoma Trail Edition. Both have rear lockers and are $39k.
Broken windshield?
Yeah, they do a really good job of keeping the media vehicles in great condition, but it went from a tiny chip to a full crack in one day during the week I had it. Cold nights and fairly warm days will make the cracks grow really fast.
Pleasant View Utah?
or west side of ben lomand.
@@FadedFlyer93 Utah county
@@EngineAdventures I gotcha! looks like around the bend of ben lomand near willard bay. Nice vid
@@FadedFlyer93 Thanks for watching! I am familiar with Willard Bay, but not Ben Lomand.

Thank you for the support! Comments like these help me stay motivated to create more content!
Great honest truck but for the price, it's kinda disappointing 😞.
It seems all trucks are expensive anymore
Imagine if it had decent tires.
As far as my testing goes different tires would have made no difference at all. Yes having the correct tires for the terrain you are on is very important, however my steep hill climb test is more about how well the vehicle transfers power to the wheels with traction.
How many fools will spend 50k to jump ditches and climb rocks ???
Out west seeing a $50k off-roader is common. I regularly see $80k+ Jeeps and Raptors out on trails (for some reason not as many TRXs).
This is the worst truck ive paid for in years... Dont buy this unless u wanna look cool, driving on the rd.... Some people like it, but some people dont.. My jeep it better in the woods than this 60k truck.. Enjoy ur day.
Interesting take, I still believe it has one of the best tuned engines and transmissions in the midsize segment.
