In trying to keep this 7.3l Powerstroke diesel engine running for a million miles, it became clear that taking good care of the engine oil is paramount. I decided to install a bypass oil filter that will, in conjunction with the conventional full flow filter, provide a higher level of filtration. It might even allow me to extend the oil change interval beyond 5,000 miles. However, it doesn't go quite according to plan. In this video I'll discuss what it takes to install a bypass oil filter on an '02 Ford E350 Powerstroke van, as well as an oil drain valve and full synthetic oil change.

3:30 If you poke a hole in the bottom of the old oil filter with a hammer and screwdriver, it will drain the oil and make for a cleaner removal.

Thanks for making this video. I have a 1997 7.3 with 87k original miles on an ambulance body and I'm in the middle of this same project (waiting for the filter to chassis bracket they forgot to send me), just wanted to know if you noticed any difference on oil quality, performance or fuel economy so far. Also does the Stiction eliminator made any difference? Looking forward to an update video😊

Hey glad it helped! I've only driven about 2500 miles since installing the bypass filter and I haven't yet sent oil out for testing. My oil is dark on the dipstick but not like before my last oil change. I'll send a sample in for testing in early summer after a few more miles and see what the results look like.
As for Stiction Eliminator, I can't say that I noticed a huge difference. The van has either a glow plug, UVCH or injector issue that causes it to run rough until warmed up and I had hoped the HSSSE would fix that but it did not.
Fuel economy hasn't changed meaningfully since I first bought the van. With fuel additives and a 203 degree thermostat my best mpg went up from around 19 to 20, but as I discuss in my video on fuel economy I think it is almost completely related to speed.

Where did you get that air intake?
That is beggjng for a Subaru hood scoop!
Great channel, I've got 2 7.3 vans I'm working on, one cargo, the other a passenger. Thanks!

A previous owner installed it. Dual K&N filters. I don't think oiled filters are necessarily the best option but I haven't seen anything better for the 7.3 van.

The oil will be black in a diesel. Some diesel soot is non abrasive and too small to be removed. Its like ink. I did a fleet of Powerstrokes when the 6.0s first came out. They ordered Gulf Coast filters bolted to the frame. Those take one roll of Bounty big roll paper towels. They hold about 1 1/2 gallon of oil. The 6.0s had a pipe plug near the full flow filter. I dont think they had the 3/8 pipe plug in the bottom of the engine skirt. Like the 7.3s. I marked the plastic oil fill extention. Removed it and drilled and tapped it 1/8 inch pipe. For extra strength I put a elbo on and hose clamped the hose to the fill tube. I ground a 3/8 inch exrention down to 5/16 for the 7.3s. They ordered the Gulf Coast juniors toilet paper filters for the gasoline Ford industrial 6 cylinder. Engines. They called me awhile back said they had more trucks. Told them to call Gulf Coast filters. Too much work for an 83 year old. I have a Australian Jackmaster Classic on the Pontiac. The oil is golden. Cant say the same for the Ford diesel tractor. I converted a flat head Ford V8 canister filter to use a 4 1/2 inch roll of Scott 1000 for the tractor. John Frantz got his start putting a Frantz canister inside the old canister filter. Saw some Purolator toilet paper conversions on Ebay. Probably John Frantz models. Mine eliminated the canister inside a canister. Too messy to change.

The Ford canister filter is in a place where it doesnt always drain at shut down. I got a package of 2 slime tubeless tire valves at Auto Zone. The ones with the nut. Put one in the Ford lid. Use a cigarette light air pump with a gauge. The pressure comes up. When the pressure drops its ready to change . The Tractor uses a 2 port Perma Cool universal oil cooler sandwich adaprer I got from Jegs years ago. Still have a few 2 port Frantz oil filter sandwiches from the 60s. None that fit the tractor. The Australian Jackmaster Classic has a optional air fitting for the lid. Its my best filter for tight places. Went with the top loaders many years ago. I would have a valve in an upside down Frantz.

I use Scott 1000 or Great Value 1000 from Walmart. The Frantz isnt set up for the shorter paper and larger cores. When I used them we didnt have Frantz elements. We used 2 ply. The AeroFrantz used the same 2 ply. For awhile I had to go to a janitorial supply to get the best.

The Australian Jackmaster Classic has 20 dollar paper in a fabric cover. They say you can use a firm roll of toilet paper. They are set up for the larger cores. Cant use soft paper in a Jackmaster Classic
