No, believe it or not BDSM can have psychological benefits. CAN, not always, plus some people are just into it. Believe it or not sadomasochism is INCREDIBLY common, it's just not extreme in most people. Spanking, hair pulling, biting, scratching? All examples of pain being inflicted during sex. That's normal, yes? Well, simply put sadism, masochism, and sadomasochism are just versions of that that happen to be a bit more extreme. Some sadists are incredibly tame, some masochist are incredibly tame. There is a line to be drawn yes, and to me the line is abusive behaviors (such as ignoring safe words) or inflicting not just pain and fear, but legitimate injury. A little but of cutting or some lashes is fine, but things like broken bones, ripped tendons, etc. are too far. Also, I feel it's important to clarify that in any HEALTHY BDSM relationship boundaries are set up, and it's discussed beforehand, it's not just "Okay, let's go with the flow you tell me when to stop." It tends to go more along the lines of, "Okay, so today you only want me to go (enter limit) far, I can respect that. If I go too far for you say your safe word and I'll stop, okay? That's why aftercare is a thing, someone is treated nicely when they're pushed. Not to mention whenever someone talks about it they almost ALWAYS portray the sub as the abused, but it CAN be the other way around. There us a thing called dom drop, where a dom feels guilt, or thinks what they're doing is too far. In that case the dom is the one that needs aftercare. However, it is possible for the sub to be an abuser and demand them to continue despite making them legitimately upset, uncomfortable, and possibly even leaving legitimate trauma in the dom. BDSM isn't a one-sided activity, it involves two, or more, consenting parties, where it is perfectly okay to revoke consent at any point and time. If that isn't respected, at least from my experience, the person responsible for disregarding that is ostracized and people warn as many as they can about them. Are there still abusers? Yes. Are there more abusers in the BDSM community? It is possible, however in the BDSM community cases of this are taken VERY seriously most of the time. In the general population, though abuse is taken seriously, it isn't as easy to open up because generally speaking the BDSM community is more sensitive to these issues as they understand abusers can take advantage of the trust put into such a relationship. Obviously normal abusers take advantage of this same trust, but often times people will see the "normal" person and think "they would never do that" however in the BDSM community we know it is very much so a possibility.
