"Stargazer" is a song by the British-American rock supergroup Rainbow, released as fifth track from the band's second studio album Rising (1976). It is an epic song narrating the story of a powerful wizard whose attempt to fly by constructing a mystical tower to the stars leads to the enslavement of vast numbers of people. "Stargazer" is notable for its musical complexity, with the guitar, lyrics, and drum solo cited as significant examples of the talents of guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, singer Ronnie James Dio, and drummer Cozy Powell.
Band leader Ritchie Blackmore retained only singer Ronnie James Dio from the previous album line-up, and recruited drummer Cozy Powell, bassist Jimmy Bain and keyboard player Tony Carey to complete the new roster] Recorded in Munich in less than a month, the album was overseen by rock producer and engineer Martin Birch. The band was originally billed as Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow in the US, but was titled simply Rainbow on this release.

â@@CasonovaCorkClubGod loves you. Repent of your sins and turn to God. Believe in his Son Jesus and you'll be saved. (Hell is REAL. CZcams: 30 Days Touring HELL)
I get goosebumps every single time I hear Ronnie sing "I see a rainbow rising"
For me itâs when he sings âmy eyes are bleeding, my heart is leaving hereâ
â@@TheMusicKingdom That one too. Dio was incredible. Such passion
@@TheMusicKingdom Yes, they're my favourite lyrics too

I never fail to get goosebumps and somewhat emotional when I hear this song. It's absolutely sublime. Good review.
Elizabeth Zharoff at Charismatic Voice refers to Ronnie James Dio as one of the greatest vocalists of any genre of all time. Worth a deep dive.
Elizabeth is a rare and amazing individual! Heck! When I was in high school she would have been considered a unicorn. A girl who likes metal, fantasy and RPG's? Impossible!!!đ€Ł
â@@RealDiehl99God loves you. Repent of your sins and turn to God. Believe in his Son Jesus and you'll be saved. (Hell is REAL. CZcams: 30 Days Touring HELL)
Sheâs not wrong he was definitely one of a kind
Paragonare una cantante di musica classica con un cantante di rock Ăš fuori da tutto
This is a Legendary band! Two members went on to Black Sabbath and the guitarist Richie Blackmore was in Deep Purple!
Ronnie James Dio has sung on three of metals greatest songs, Stargazer, Heaven and Hell ( Black Sabbath) and Holy Diver ( Dio) Jimmy Bain also played bass on two of them which he never really got the kudos for
Hi, you missed that the guitar also tells a whole story on the last solo. It tells how you are in the orient, how hard life is and then explains how tall the tower was by illustrating how long the climb was for the wizard with the ascending chords that kept going a lot longer than expected. Then it tells how wrong things went with the strident notes and the wizard falling to his death with the slides at the end of the solo. That's one thing people miss when listening to metal. A lot of the time, the guitar fills in part of the story not told by the lyrics.
Spot on. Blackmores solo is a structured story, telling us what is to come when Dio comes back in
Well done! Richie Blackmore was one who brought classical runs into hard rock/metal. A pioneer.
He invented neoclassical rock as we have it today. Ritchie Blackmore is a genius.
Still my favorite song of all time. The best drum intro, the best singer which defined how metal vovalists should sound like and of course the ultimate guitar solo. đ„
If you like this one, Gates of Babylon live, also by Rainbow, is essential listening!
10 for me, one of my favorite songs of all time. Fantastic group, exceptional live shows. The 1977 Munich concert song "Mistreated" Is something you should checkout.
It gets an 11 from me!
Welcome to the club of discovering this absolute epic classic. Every time one becomes a fan of it an angel gets it's wings.. and a wizard gets his star.
Great reaction. As you loved this I think you'd really like Light In The Black that you mentioned too.
If this is 7.5 I donât know what your 10 is. This is considered one of best rock songs ever recorded.
Yep, totally agree!
Play a tune and everyone will have a different opinion Dio was one of a kind.
â@@basher5107and so is Ritchie...
Saw Dio live in 2005 here in Ukraine, brilliant concert! Ronnie James Dio and Freddie Mercury are both my â1 singers!
Richie Blackmore was no joke.
Rainbow is hard rock and Neo classical rock..check out deep purpleâs child in time live 1970 for great musicians and phenomenal vocals by Ian gillan.
Iâve lived with the song since shortly after itâs release. It still moves me and gives me goosebumps. Itâs definitely peak Rainbow but Ronnie was in to his groove which went on to new heights with both Black Sabbath and with his Solo band. There are not enough superlatives for this album. The stars really did align for this recording and itâs good to see people much younger than me appreciating it. Iâd like to know what you think of it in another 40 years plus đ
It doesn't get much more epic than this!! Dio's vocals absolutely SOAR - the demonic elf himself has willed that wizard to plummet to his death. RIP Ronnie!
Yes, that drum opening never gets old - Cozy Powell knew how to make an entrance. Blackmore's guitars, keys, strings...it's all there! 9/10 for me. Cheers.
Another great metal band in a similar style to this is Dio they have the same singer as rainbow, and the song I would recommend is holy diver.
Been really enjoying this content over the standard reaction content on CZcams and I hope your channel continues to grow.
Noted! Much appreciated.
LAST IN LINE is the definitive DIO track.
Love Dio, so glad I got to see him live on top of everything else he was an immense showman and incredible person. Would love to see you give the modern metal band Jinjer a go. Tight and complex musically with an incredible singer (my favorite modern metal singer) and powerful lyrics. I suggest Homeback. The band is Ukrainian and they made the song about losing their homes to the war in 2014. A powerful and current topic.
I love dio best Singer all time
Dio also sang for Black Sabbath do Heaven and Hell
Great reaction and analysis! Always glad to see someone new getting into hard rock and metal. If you are looking for suggestions I would recommend Reverie/Harlequin Forest by Opeth
Much appreciated!
Seconded! Opeth's music takes you on a journey in a way that very few bands can pull off, and it does not get better than Reverie/Harlequin Forest!
@@alvinulv love the profile picture!
"Stargazer" was the answer of Ricthie Blackmore (the guitarist and leader of Rainbow) to "Kashmir" the big hit by Led Zeppelin (led by the legendary guitarist Jimmy page) in 1975 . It includes the same harmonic minor scale (you can also find in another Rainbow song like Gates of Babylon or Perfect stranger by Deep Purple - after Rictchie Blackmore reintegrate this band) . Harmonic minor scale become then frequently played in the metal genre. If you want a song well crafted with the amazing voice of R.J Dio try "Children of the sea" by Black Sabbath .
Ritchie Blackmore was and will always be refered to as the Speed King. Go back and listen to Deep Purple In Rock and you will be stunned.
Please check out A Light in the Black which is the next song on Rising and itâs amazing

Youâd probably love Heaven and Hell from Black Sabbath. Ronnie James Dio sings on that track too
The world is full of kings and queens who blinds your eyes and steal your dreams , it's heaven and hell. According to Wendy, he was talking about Ritchie Blackmore in that paragraph. Also, the song rainbow đ in the dark was also about Ritchie Blackmore. Ritchie really put Ronnie thru hell personally. Ritchie was the wizard his Idle, especially when he opened up for Deep Purple. He was in Elf opening up for the greatest band in the world at the time. It had to hurt when Ritchie wanted him out of the band.
Strongly recommend listening to Opeth, they have amazing compositions, Bleak is a favourite of mine
Bleak is great! I recommended Reverie/Harlequin Forest myself.
âCatch the Rainbowâ ballad well written, rare Ronny singing falsetto. âGates of Babylonâ & âKill the Kingâ are my old favorites. âChildren of the Seaâ & â Rainbow in the Darkâ are the later favorites
Can you hear the wizard climbing the stairs and then falling in the guitar solo
«Nice voice!» âŠunderstatement of the Year!đâ€
If you want to see some GREAT vocals react to the song Mistreated by this band in 1977 Munich. Dio fricking kills it :)
I just got the Munich concert on CD for Christmas!!! Best live recording ever! Miss you RJD!
1976, in Europe this album was huge. In the UK people queued overnight to get it. It's a genre defining masterpiece
The song is a morality tale inspired by the film "The Silver Chalice" starring Jack Palance
Additional: your reaction says everything
@@InterestingStuff888 ok you watch the movie first before presuming and Ronnie said the song was partly inspired by a movie he loved as a teenager called.... oh look "The Silver Chalice". And there is a quote from Cozy Powell where he confirms this in a book I have about Rainbow. Maybe do some research instead of pretending you know something when in actuality you know sweet FA. Were you even around in '76?
As a starter: "The Silver Chalice". Here's the main scene, a wizard (Jack Palance) trying' to fly from the top of a tower built by slaves... and failing.
czcams.com/video/8dHzAn1vhl0/video.html
And Ronnie's signature style developed over time and wasn't limited to fantasy. Man you people with your blinkered views.
Star Struck - a stalker
The Shed(subtle) - Chelsea FC's infamous Shed and the fans
Kill The King - Chess
Heaven and Hell etc etc etc.
Known this classic for some 40 years .... always great to hear it again through new ears. It just gets better and better. Anthemic
I appreciate the effort you put into these reactions and the thought you put into breaking them down. I don't know if it would fit your reaction format but at least for your own listening pleasure you should check out Queensryche's Take Hold of the Flame, specifically the live from tokyo version.
The day Ronnie James Dio and Richie Blackmore teamed up marked the birth of what would become the genre of Power Metal.
And now, for the understatement of the decadeâŠ
Dio: *sings anything*
Francis: âNice voiceâ
Blackmore did write probably the most recognized guitar riff of all time! Smoke On The Water.
Thank you for a great reaction!! And listening!!!
Just found your site, very cool! Awesome song, and an excellent review! Now, how about another highly influential 70s classic, and the same year, 1976⊠Boston⊠either More Than A Feeling, or Foreplay/Long Time.
That, ladies and gentlemen, is creme de la creme of rock.
And, again, it's so refreshing to hear experts explain without either looking down their noses or sucking up to the fans for their clicks.
Please, stick to your guns, and that from a lifelong fan of Ritchie, Ronnie, Cozy and others.
Most of us don't know keys or recognize time signatures, but with this, what you do, we can understand what we feel, the brilliance and the shortcomings.
My impatient former-rocker-now-jazz-guitarist-son only had something like this to say: "Almost all rock is predictable... But it's great energy."
You guys explain it far better, thank you!
For more of the same level, react to âGates of Babylonâ which is an even better example of Phrygian Dominant. Ronnie James Dioâs outro is the most complete rock vocal performance ever. NoteâŠthe guitar solo IS the wizard ascending and then dramatically descending, played with a slide.
the continuation of this song on the same album, "a light in the black" was one of the first pre-metal songs and another epic Blackmore's solo after DP era
You have stumbled upon one of the greats in music, Ronnie James Dio aka Dio with his voice as his instrument.
The most epic outro. The first time I heard this song I was BLOWN away and had it on loop for like 2 hours lol.
Me currently.
Thank you for paying proper attention to the lyrics, something I felt many other reaction videos were lacking. To me the song is very visual, telling an epic story, which all the other instruments, particularly Ritchie's guitar solo, beautifully and greatly enhance and compliment, just as you noted.
Great reaction video!
If you think that Heavy Metal was a later progression, listen to the song 'Black sabbath' from the band Black sabbath first album from 1970.
Well, I reckon you both nailed it.
Dio is legendary as one of the best metal vocalistscof all time. In fact, until I discovered Floor Jansen, he'd be equal number 1 with Bruce Dickinson
Youâve just discovered the peak of 1970th rock music !
Somewhere back in blighty there's a house with this album cover painted on one of the walls...
Another GOAT starting in the 70s, Judas Priest and the song , changes and or the ripper.
Richie Blackmore the guitarist in rainbow was also in the band deep purple ,that being mentioned please check the song child in time you Seriously, wonât be disappointed. Excellent reaction guy.
As a new subscriber I LOVE your format. Other first time reaction videos stop the music 40 times, rewind it over & over, etc. Thats ok too but I like the way you stop the music very infrequently, & do the major analysis all at once afterwards. So. Just sayin, I like it, man!
Congratulations on a great review / reaction on a piece of music that is considered an all-time classic. If you like the fusion of rock/metal with orchestral music then I think you'd love dipping your toes into a sub-genre called Symphonic Metal. One of the prime movers in this is a band from Finland called Nightwish. They've been around for over 20 years now, and you'll see people reacting to their songs all over CZcams (so no risk of copyright shenanigan, right?) Can I suggest you start where most people get their introduction to this band, with a live recording from the Wacken Open Air festival in 2013, and listen to "Ghost love Score". You can then try out other songs like "Poet and the Pendulum", (live at Wembley) "I Want My Tears Back" (live in Buenos Aires) "Phantom of the Opera" (live - End of an Era tour) and "The Greatest Show on Earth" (Live in Tampere, Finland) czcams.com/video/47e_961OQWE/video.html
oh I love this whole album .... this was one of my first albums I bought and I love it
If you liked this slice of '70's Epicness, then you have to try 'Kashmir,' by Led Zeppelin, which,in my opinion,is the only song of this type that surpasses 'Stargazer'!
Led Zeppelin wrote many great songs, but nothing comes close to this nine minutes of Bombastic Greatness, complete with a Riff to die for!
zep was over rated
I think it's a 10/10... But then again, I heard it when it first came out... You have to consider context at the time of release. No other band at the time, other than Rush with "2112", Could even come close. You really should listen to 2112 by Rush... Then I think you would understandđ
Artists in the 60's and 70's had unbelievable freedom to create what they wanted. The current era is a void of creativity by comparison because now artists have to chase the like, the views, the numbers and that means dumbing down their production to be more accessible. There is no way that an artist could force a record company to release something like Lou Reed's "Metal Machine Music" today.
Well said!
This song, Fly on a Windsheild by Genesis and Powerslave by Iron Maiden are two other tunes that have an ancient Egypt theme.
You should look at Chop Suey! by System of a Down. It is one of the best metal songs of the 2000s, and it probably doesn't even fit in one genre with how unique it is. The lyrics are also fantastic.
Remember as teenager listening to this song, and for me it was watching a movie!
That iconic solo by Ritchie Blackmore was unmatched for almost 2 decades.
Another band with a niche following and very similar in feel from the same time-frame was Trapeze. If you haven't heard them you may want to give them a try. Coast to Coast and Medusa are two of their best for completely different reasons.
Rising is one of the albums that created the heavy metal sound.
I am new to this channel. I have watched a few things but only within that last few days.
It would be silly to call myself a Dio or Rainbow fan. I didn't discover them, really, until I was in college. My metal roots start with Iron Maiden. However, I think this album is the greatest metal album of all time. I like rock music too and rather study it. Rainbow Rising is like the London Calling of metal music. There is this thru-way from it where you can tell how metal got there as well as where it went since, just like London Calling does with rock. Rainbow Rising is a revelation of an album and anyone who even remotely likes metal or hard rock music need to be familiar with it. It is as important a metal record as I have ever heard.
Kill the King is a fav of mine and Gates of Babylon is another exotic epic.
"Heaven & Hell" Dio era Black Sabbath is EPIC \m/
the best rock song ever
This song along with Gates of babylon have a very ethereal deserty bleakness I can get hypnotised by the lead work in gates of babylon,, trippy
In the next song (A Light in the Black), in the final verse, itâs revealed that the slave has become the next Stargazer/master, and the cycle begins again⊠Dio is brilliant.
Francis, You appreciated one of the all time classics, and that is commendable for a 'non-metal head'. It really has stood the test of time - nearly 50 years now. From a vocal point of view, could I politely recommend you watch this fantastic review by the legend / opera diva / vocal coach that is Elizabeth Zharoff - AKA The Charismatic Voice. czcams.com/video/eR8hwLQIiFw/video.html
This explains his unbelievable vocal ability and I understood it so much better afterwards.
Kudos to you. Perhaps try something from later in Dio's career - Falling Off The edge Of The World (with Black Sabbath) or perhaps The Last In Line (with his own band, Dio). Interested to see what your next choice will be. đ€ (Oh - and subbed)

The absolute killer drum by Cozy Powell is rightly so considered one of the greatest drum intro in rock music.
I'd say it's up there with Led Zepplin's song Rock n' Roll, Hot for teacher by Van Halen, Fireball by Deep Purple and Painkiller by Judas Priest.
The âback and forth - back and forthâ was intentional. Think of slaves hauling huge pieces of stone in step with each other.
1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2 etc
Itâs symbolic
I'm an amateur drummer myself, so... Yeah. Cozy Powell killed that shit. The only "better" drum intro to a heavy rock/metal/pop song is the opening to WHEN THE LEVEE BREAKS by Led Zeppelin/John Bonham and that's more about the percussive groove than the technicality. FIREBALL by Deep Purple/Ian Paice and PAINKILLER by Judas Priest/Scott Travis are kinda nice, too. I also like EXCITER. Again by Judas Priest but with Les Binks on the skins back in the '70's.
Yet Cozy P. managed to trash many songs in MSG as well... đđ
I saw tham play this live in 1976 saw them s times altogther
Here's a little tidbit to add to your historical possibilities.
I've enjoyed this song for many years. Dio, Blackmore, and all the members of Rainbow are legends. A few years back I saw this documentary on the History channel and I immediately wondered if this was the basis for this song. Just food for thought. I have also included the Wiki link.
In the 9th century engineer Abbas Ibn Firnas is considered to be the first human to fly with the help of a pair of wings built by silk, wood and real feathers.
*Armen Firman is the Latinized name of Abbas Ibn Firnas. "According to some secondary sources, about 20 years before Ibn Firnas attempted to fly he may have witnessed Firman as he wrapped himself in a loose cloak stiffened with wooden struts and jumped from a tower in CĂłrdoba, intending to use the garment as wings on which he could glide. The alleged attempt at flight was unsuccessful, but the garment slowed his fall enough that he only sustained minor injuries."

Suggesting Child In Time (Deep Purple off of "In Rock" album) and Mistreated (also Deep Purple, the version off Live in London is IMO the best one).
I'd love to see you react to something by Disturbed. David's vocal range is incredible.
His cover of "if I Ever Lose My Faith in You" is epic.

Hello again and greetings from the Netherlands. About 2 weeks ago, I tried to draw your attention to a great band (in the comments of your 'Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name' video). I'm talking about Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish. Any idea if and/or when you'll take a listen? I'd love to hear your opinion!
I second that. I love Ronnie James Dio and never thought there would be anyone like him in the future. Then i heard Floor and she did not disappoint. Very similar to RJD in the way she tells a story and holds you throughout the song and what a range. The band are amazing also

@@TheMusicKingdom Hi, lovely to hear from you. Some of my favourite songs? You know, that's almost impossible to answer as they have so many great songs. It's something you'll have to experience yourself, as every new song you hear from them could very well be your favourite.
I recommended their epic and melodic song 'Ghost Love Score", live at Wacken 2013. A great piece with some masterful singing by their leadsinger Floor Jansen. czcams.com/video/47e_961OQWE/video.html However, this can be a bit much for first time listeners, as it has so many musical layers. If you prefer a more straightforward song, with a great melody and uplifting vibe, try 'Storytime' from that same show. czcams.com/video/vUvEsX9D4eU/video.html I think you'll love it. Take care and regards from the Netherlands.
Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie Dio basically invented the sub genre of neo classical rock/metal. Ritchie was my hero and all time favorite guitarist. A legend in Black. Cozy Powell is maybe the greatest rock drummer in history. His snare drum work is legendary.
Your brother is correct it is in E minor for the most part.
To hear a more musical complex Rainbow song, check out "The Gates of Babylon" from the Rainbow record Long Live Rock and Roll.
First heart theam in 1980, best voice ever!!!!!!!!!!
Dio is known as one of the foundational metal singers of all time (RIP Dio). He had the ability to garner command of the audience with his strong presence, and powerful open-throated vocal technique. The people in 80s bands used to call him Pop. He was well respected and a gentle soul. Richie Blackmore's legendary talent still inspires musicians to this day. I have to say that he was tough to work with (an a$$, to be gentle). Lmao!! Great review.
You need to hear Mistreated live by Rainbow with Dio. That's incredable singing. And for a good round listen, you should next check out Rainbow Eyes by Rainbow with Dio. đđ€đ
Cozy Powell, just great and very much missed
Agree with the repeatiness, Check out Light in the black, Kill the king, Gates of Babylon. Dio at his best.
Back and forth, back and forth repetitions are the slaves dragging the stones for the tower of the wizard. That's nine years worth of breaking their backs. You don't represent this nine years with less repetitions. And that's the beauty of the music of Dio. He can make you feel the song, the story of the song like no one else.
You should hear Rainbow Eyes from the next Rainbow album if you like more melodic music.
This song and all the songs from rainbow, I feel shaped heavy metal for what was to come. This band was way ahead of its time Blackmore the guitarist was way ahead of his time he put this group together Ronnie James Dio, the vocalist, cozy, palindromes way ahead of his time. Itâs still sounds good, even though it was in the 70s and I like that you said it has a 70 sound but at the same time it could still come out now excellent.
You young! Is metal!
Proto-Metal for sure
Erm . . . the Orchestra was actually present some 3 minutes before you noticed!
đ€đ€đ
Dio is the star
It was an instant thumbs up for the CORGI!!!! And then it only gets a 8.4? My belief is that the song should have gone on for another 5 minutes.
Iâd be VERY happy if it did that.
