Always happy to see you put out a new video. Great as always. I gotta get my hands on that Sega CD version.
thanks man! yeah you do, did you finally also get a Sega CD??
Console Wars EEEEEEEEEEEEEE! CONSOLE WARS! IM A BIG FAN OF YOU!
Console wars should do extra bits. (Kek kek kek bits.) Like sega should do episodes comparing games that were ported to multiple consoles and nintendo should do the same. That would be awesome. To me, theyre the OG youtube channel about the console wars
Well now you have it! :o
Later!
I laugh when people say the Genesis had "a lack of bass." Enjoy your muffled SNES samples :-P
Hey I just about managed to load the video on the crappy connection over here. Awesome episode, this was a fun episode to work on as I'm a huge Disney fan. Thanks again for having me on an episode it was an honour to say the least
thanks Dan! it was a massive pleasure having you and you are welcome back any time :)
when I was a kid a friend of mine had the Sega Genesis version, i played it, and was amazed, so I ended up buying the SNES version (back then you either had a SNES or a Genesis). Ended up returning the cartridge because I tought the game was defective (missing sounds, loading times, compresed music), those really small details made whant to get a Genesis just to play this game
I like the side-by-side comparisons, like how the water looks more blue on the SNES than on the Sega Genesis at 4:55.
Then again, since that house seems broken down and might have holes in the floor, how can it flood? :P In any case, I appreciate the hard work that went into this video. :D
video game logic! i again didn't realize the difference in shades until i was editing and had them side by side. it does make the SNES water look way too saturated, to me at least. thanks though, and really glad you enjoyed!
im a huge snes fan but i think the water looked way more realistic on the genesis. Water is blue because of the sky. If it's indoors its just clear like a bathtube full of water.
I remember when we got a Genesis back in 89 or 90. We received Micky's Castle of Illusion at Christmas and we were blown away by the fluid animations, music and gameplay overall. I was born in 78 so I started out with Atari, then it was Nintendo and when Genesis came out that just blew us away. Even my Dad, who did not play games at all, was watching us play and he was impressed, haha.
Great vid, good to see Dan from Retro Zone on here :) love the Mickey games.
thanks Dan! I am thrilled he agreed to help out, just feel bad it took me so long to put this out there, but we made it in the end!
Awesome, another episode. Every one of them feel like a treat when they release!
thanks man!
This is my first time watching this Channel and I've got to say he's pretty darn good. It's a shame he hasn't made a video in 9 months it makes me worry he's not coming back. I have high hopes to see what kind of content this guy comes up with with the future.
Came across this channel from SNESdrunk and your channel is criminally underrated. Just binged all of your videos and I'm excited for more content. Keep it up my friend.
SNNNNNNNNNESdrunk! he's good people, thanks for that! dunno if i've had someone binge all my episodes before haha! welcome
great to see a new vid from ya man, always a good watch
thank you for watching!
Great comparison! I literally watched someone stream the Genesis version earlier today, and everyone was wondering what the big differences were. I will definitely share with them. Keep up the good work!
haha nice! someone else said they were just watching a stream of this as well! thanks for watching and thanks for sharing around!
I was literally thinking about getting this game, not even joking. Weird coincidence. Anyway, I'm very grateful you made this video. Haven't watched it yet as of typing this comment, but I want the definitive experience with this game (who wouldn't), so I'm happy to watch this, SO HAPPY!
it's fate my friend! haha glad i could be of service, and enjoy it!
Great review! Nice content & you covered all the bases. I've always passed over this game for whatever reason. But you've sold me on it. Hopefully the other customers at my local game store having seen this vid yet lol
awesome, yeah definitely worth a shot. most of the mickey games i've played have been really solid, always worth a go
Welcome back, homie. Very good episode.
thank you!
Great having you back! I never knew a PS1 version existed!!!
thanks! i had no idea either until researching for the episode!
Your channel is amazing!!
Will be great a Spot goes to Hollywood video
Big fan of this channel!! Snez Drunk pionted me here from his Aladdin video
You guys fairly similar. Really enjoyed the added info on this channel.
ah yeah Dan and Greg do great work, i love that people can enjoy their work and mine, not to mention Same Name Different Game or like Brasel's Face Off. if you do get the chance to find a working cart, definitely worth giving it another go! thanks for sticking it out through the interruptions! haha
There are other channels with the same premise of comparing snes and genny. You actually have content instead of fluff. Love it
I remember playing the PS1 version so much when I was a kid, it was bare hard. I thought it was me, reassuring to know the difficulty was increased.
Sadly, when I moved, I had to giveaway the game. I might go buy a copy now.
Great video like always man. I love the effort you put in. 👍
thanks for that, sucks you had to give your game away though. thankfully it'll only run you like £5 to replace!
before I watched your review, I did not know about the extra stuff in the Sega CD and PS1 versions, the version I had was the genesis version, great video overall and thanx for the new information
I enjoyed your video :) Keep it up!
thanks!
The Contra series has a lot of games covering NES, SNES, Sega Genesis and Arcade formats. And it's a fairly classic series. I'm interested anyway! Thanks for the vids man!
Love this video, and the Console Wars video on this game.
thanks! Console Wars is great :)
Love this channel.
great videos. Just found you and subscribed. Currently watching all you Vs. content and loving it all. I first found Console Wars and was looking for more content like they're channel. I notice and love how you calabirate with a lot of CZcamsrs and love this. Was thinking how great it would be if you got together with these guys. Congrats on the great channel and I can't wait for your next upload.
Very well covered. One again Sega does what Nintendon't in the States at least. Does the PAL version run noticeably faster on a region free NTSC PS1?
thanks! as for the import PAL version, I don't believe so. I've never imported a PS1 game from PAL regions so I can't say for certain, but i found a discussion thread on RacketBoy talking about it and sounds like the disc coding instructs the system either to run in 50 or 60Hz mode, so it should run the same regardless of the region of the console.
Great job! I love Mickey Mania on the Sega CD and it was one of the games that made be a retro gamer. It's so nice I bought it twice! (Sadly because I believed all the hype that new game consoles are always better than old ones and sold my original Sega CD and "upgraded" to the next system. I am older and wiser now.) Again, well done! Also I believe Epic Mickey 1 & 2 for the Wii don't get enough love. Those games are fantastic 3D platformers!
haha i think we've all been there before, i've been eyeing re-buying a GBA SP because i gave mine to a friend years ago (what was i thinking!) along with the shining force remake and pokemon red (seriously... what the hell was i THINKING?!). i really enjoyed Epic Mickey but sort of lost steam with it a bit, haven't tried the 2nd yet.
Goodnight when that gorgeous ps1 gameplay first came up. WOW! That holds up amazing even now.
Great video man!!!! :D
Having only known the Genesis and SNES version (and only played the SNES), it was purely a shock to hear the CD and PS1 audio of songs that I loved.
Hey bro, your videos are helpful. Thank you
loving the lil fun fact breaks.
thanks! :) seriously one of my favorite things of my videos
I used to play this game on my friend's genesis bc i had Ps1 , and now i just notice there is a ps1 version lol.
Finally! Nice epsde!
Bought this some years back but returned it because of issues getting it to work with my Geni.
Looks like solid title!
I am actually going to play this game (SEGA CD version) this November on my channel. I would be honored if you have any tips/suggestions for me. Love your content! Your guest was also very entertaining! SUBSCRIBED!
Whoa whoa whoa....loading times on a SNES game?! I gotta say, the Sega CD version looks to be the best. Never played this one but I'll check it out if I get the chance. I'll go check out RetroZone's channel!
hah it's sadly true, there were a handful like that. i don't know how correct this is but i'd read that it's a common problem on games developed for the Genesis and then brought to the SNES. also Street Fighter Alpha 2 haha. thanks Mike!
Hmmm... you'd think that someone at Travellers Tales was a big SEGA fanboy, or something!
I just came across your chanel by chance and I really like your videos. Your recent Max Payne video was really good too! Hope to see more from you, mate.
The Mickey with the saw blade you never seen in the levels! He was just added for the Pete battle.
glad you showed up in the latest console wars vid so i checked your channel again cause i somehow missed this episode when it came out a week ago. always good to see more content from you! love your stuff. never even knew about the playstation version of this one before.
hey thanks man, super thankful they included me in their 50th episode and even moreso now! thanks for watching!
Hilariously enjoyable video! I still prefer the SEGA CD version overall, including its take on the "3D" Moose Chase vs the polygonal PS1 version. But to each their own. Playing the Genesis version afterwards, I miss all the voices , the redbook audio music, and the extras. This is a great platformer regardless of which console you play on!
Great channel! very entertaining! I was wondering if you have ever considered doing an episode on NEO GEO ports and all of the various iterations on all of the different consoles, as well as comparing and contrasting them against one another?
thanks, sorry i didn't get back to you the first time. honestly i haven't really considered that, mainly because i don't have an AES or anything like that. if it fit in nicely with a game i was already working on for other consoles i wouldn't mind emulating for just a few bits of footage, but for the full on comparison i'd prefer the real hardware
ive been waiting for a new game vs game for a while now.
*in best Douglas Reynholm impression* Well see it now!
3 games came with my psx, rayman,Hercules and mickeys wild adventure , good times
Great episode! This game sure is a looker no matter which system it's on. Personally I think the unfair difficulty (mostly due to fuzzy hit detection and being limited to only 1 continue) really breaks the game into a huge mess, but still a great episode and to each their own :)
there definitely was some of those moments, "How did I just die?!... WHAT?!" same principle as the flooded hallway, the game seemingly didn't know i was off the barrel and at the end of the hallway, DRAIN ALREADY!! i still think it's a fun game regardless, but you're right it does have it's issues.
I had this, Rayman and MK3 for the PS1 at the time and almost felt like it was a send off for 2D gaming before moving over to 3D gaming.
Wow, amazing to hear some of the great Michael Giacchino's earlier game music.
i know, right? i had found some sources that stated he was brought in special for the Sega CD version, but he's definitely there listed in the credits on all versions. great music, this game, for sure!
I went to his wiki page after this and it seems like he did quite a bit of game music when he was coming up. I'll have to check some of them out; he's one of my fave movie composers!
I loved the ps1 version as a kid. Was a huge fan of disney as a kid aswell, so it only came naturally.
Im happely in the PAL region bought it for about 6$ (€4,5) freeking amazing. played this game to death as a kid and loved it :) can't wait to play it again
Always a good day when there's a new Game Vs Game. Good choice of game this time too.
Mickey Mania is a damn fine game. I really should own a copy of the PS1 version. Kinda dumb that i don't. I'll get on that. Recently got Fantasia for Mega Drive and that game is driving me nuts. I keep watching people play it and they're having no troubles but when I play I can't jump on any enemies. Lord knows what I'm doing wrong.
Also, What's that Tiger Electronics LCD game behind you?
ah thanks Ant, i'm feeling that too, i need that PS1 game in my life. just need a European PSN account :) also, re: the tiger handheld... i can't reveal that quite yet ;)
My buddy is forcing me to set up the PS3 so he can play Dreadnaught Pirates right now. Might be doing a stream. Might have a look to see how much Mickey Mania is on the the PS3 store. Not been playing much PS1 stuff recently. Gotta get collecting those random games up before PS1 stuff starts getting over expensive like Saturn has.
Looking forward to you exclaiming that Street Fighter II the Tiger LCD game is the definitive version soon.
I think the 3D scenes look more charming on the 16bit consoles. It could be nostalgia, but I really prefer them over the PS1's polygons. I didn't even realize this version existed.
2 things. heh heh u had ballz on your chin. lol. second, this series is amazingly done. I can't believe you onlyy have 3k subs please keep up the great work. I'm sure more fans will be coming your way.
haha did Rewind Mike send you?? it was the only thing i had that could pass for "Bollocks", it was a take on a Rik Mayall bit :)
Now that you did this, you should do one for Donald as well with the Cold shadow game:D
I had that game on PS1. No idea it was a PAL exclusive, that sounds insane coming from Disney. Never about those stupid SoA rules... really makes you wonder what kinda rules Sega of America implemented that might have helped kill the Saturn and DC.
SNES had the iconic RPG stuff, DKC and Mario but other than that pretty much everything else was better on the Genesis, even Castlevania (I said what I said)
I want to use dvd cases for my saturn games so bad, but I sort of don't at the same time.
oh dude, the truth will set you free! those overgrown clam shells are the worst! i've gone disc only for Sega CD and Saturn and haven't looked back. not to mention it's WAY cheaper
BTW they should have made a Saturn version, the 2D would have been even smoother!
The sega cd version has one of the most epic and underrated soundtracks, i still listen to it on my regular cd player!
~~Track 1 is best track~~
I noticed mickey and the beanstalk on the CD plays the moose dungeon track from the Genesis version but the track for the genesis version of mickey and the beanstalk seems missing from the CD version.
I got the 4 games complete. This is a great video 👍💪🏻👍 ...but why not original Sega CD case for Mickey Mania?
The craziest thing about this was i am watching a guy that is beating all the genesis games 1 by 1 on twitch. he started this game today. I took a break from watching it and you uploaded this right before he started playing it...
Illuminati confirmed?
hah! that is awesome! you figured us out. the world is controlled by retro video games, don't let anyone tell you differently.
i had a feeling
Hey brotha...when do you release vids? Once a month? Thanks, and I enjoy your older episodes as well (esp Earthworm Jim and Zombies Ate...).
i always try to do once a month, that's always my goal. i've been really lax lately only doing 3 over the last 7 or so months and need to get back into the swing of it. shooting for getting another episode out at the end of June at least. thanks for sticking with me through my haphazard schedule :)
Does the PAL PS1 version go slower cause its 50hz or is it pal optimized to run as fast as the 16bit NTSC counterparts?
I happen have the Mickeys Wild Adventure for PSX it was the first game I bought with my own money...
Now I have a reason to get a Sega CD!
Now ill watch a Console Wars and get their take on it.
Great video as always.. quick question tho where do u print out those covers for sega cd games? I would love to do that for some of my loose ps1 games
thanks! the covers, oh man, i love them! most of them I got from thecoverproject.net - there's tons on there, but still a couple gaps where i had to make my own like Virtual Hydlide for Saturn.
That is a wonderful site! I also highly recommend it!
O wow you made your own? Impressive 👍🏻 I will check this site out thanks for the info and thanks for the videos
Jon of TT released videos on how he did the cool stuff in the Genesis Mickey Mania.
Looks like your video capture with Sega seems to have issues interpreting the 240p signal as the electrically similar 480i. It creates that artificial scanline effect.
If you're interested in the dev of this game, he posts over on GameHut with a bunch of stuff of how he made the Gen port.
Games made for the Genesis but ported to the Snes had loading times due to the slower cpu running what was essentially a rom check. It was the way the 6800 cpu handled data using secondary ram as a buffer (blast processing). Lazy programing too a pure port did this without a re coding. It wasn't that the snes couldn't load it fast it was trying to load it like Sega did so it was waiting on a buffer that didn't exist. Like I said lazy programing.
Mickey's Wild Adventure is definitely worth the price on the European Playstation Store. It's like, what, 2 euros? And then you can play it on your Vita or PSP.
!!! definitely need to set up a Euro PSN account
technically for the story to be complete you should mention the bootleg nes version (and possibly mention the plans at one time for a sequel, demo footage has been taken of it)
I would _love_ to get this game, but I haven't got a Playstation, and doubt I'll ever get one... I might once get an SNES, though, so perhaps I should get it for that system.
I don't know how you didn't mention the extra background scrolling on the Snes vs the Genesis. For example look at the extra later of clouds on the Snes at 05:58. Also, Snes has an extra layer of scrolling in this level at 1:15. Also the missing stars and the moon on the Genesis at 06:44.
I'm having trouble emulating ps1 or genesis. Anyone know which one is better.
Nice touch with the 16-bit Blackadder theme ringtone at 10:19 ;)
talking about the ps1 version, sprites don't seem to be redesigned but blurred...
I used to play this all the time on my Ps1. I remember this game being way too difficult for me. Maybe I should give it another go?
nice! i'd say definitely give it another go! Dan said the difficulty was bumped up for the PS1 though i don't know how drastically. there's always the Mega Drive version to fall back on, too! good luck!
I don't own any SEGA consoles, so I'd either have to track down the SNES version, or play my PS1 version. Despite the difficulty I always had fun playing this game. I vaguely remember the game having difficulty options, with the game skipping some parts of the game on the easy difficuly setting, but I have no idea if that's just my faulty memory at work there.
I played Mickey's Wild Adventure back in the day. I rented it from the video shop to play on the weekend. After 2 or 3 hours I saw the credits. It was nice but way too short and too easy. Now you say it was hard. So I wonder if I were just being "lucky" to finish it without dying much. Or was it bad luck on your side? I don't think I was an exceptionally good gamer back then (and am still not).
The 3DO and jaguar was out by the time this game was released so why didn't they program this game for those two consoles as well?
I've watched a few of your videos and those dvd cases you put your saturn and sega cd games in stand out to me....mainly because I hate the original clamshell cases too. The plastic cracks so easily lol
The PS1 version looks like it is lagging, is it that way in person and only an issue with streaming it?
you should do an episode comparing the 2 nes versions of ms. Pac-man
You didnt include the unlicensed Famicom version which is impressive.
I think "cartoon" games that have animations by actual cartoonists are usually better on the Genesis/Mega Drive. I don't know if it's because the faster processor can better deal with the increased number of animation frames and developers choose the system to base the games originally (so SNES only gets ports).
I agree, though i don't know how many games used hand drawn animation cels, would be interesting to look into and see how they fared on other systems. but it definitely seems to be the case in developing a game for the Genesis and porting it to the SNES that's there's issues like the decompression/loading and squished screen
Earthworm Jim series is another similar example i can think of right now.
4:09 sonic pushing sound
There's a collection the japanese saturn if you're interested.
No mentioning that the SNES one has much better colors than the Genesis version, huh?
Slaxbox It looks washed out af
Slaxbox and a extra background layer on some stages!
Much better?
Slightly better in some areas and slightly worse in others
I wouldn't say much better....
@xg223 genesis has 10 sound output channels and snes has 8...
As a guy who has a degree in post production the only thing genesis lacks in comparison to snes on a consistent basis is voice overs. That simply has to do with how they digitized the voices
IT'S ALIIIIIIIIVE
haha yeah, my channel is like a tortoise: it may not move a lot, but you can be pretty sure it's not dead
Would of loved to see this in its final form on the saturn rather than the ps1
Was wondering if you would ever do a vs. using ComixZone on the Geni...but I don't know what it could be put up against. Not sure Nintendo themselves ever created a game like that in those days.
To me, its such a cool looking game.k
oh yeah Comix Zone is great but I think you're right there's not really anything like it around.
oh hai there! :)
well hello!
Can US PS3's run PAL PS1 games? if so you can always import it.
It can, but you also need a TV that supports 50 Hz signals. Very common in Europe, but apparently hard to find in the US.
The PS1 PAL version looks great of course, but it does look like it is in slow motion compared to the NTSC games.
Allen Smilden the video capture here of the PS1 pal version does look a bit slow, but looking at other vids of it on yt it looks smoother at full pal 50hz (50fps) frame rate. The guy may have halved the frame rate (sub 30fps) to reduce the file size, that's my theory anyway.
I only have the lowly snes port but haven't played it yet but I got it for $10 w manual.
nice! can't complain about that, that's probably about what I paid for just the cart.
very interesting video. hello from Russia
You can go to game hut to see how it was programed you can even see a unreleased sequel
Earthworm Jim 2 also had a PS1 port
Sounds like Donkey Kong Country music at 6:16.
The SEGA version at 6:30 is better.
Don't hear the donkey kong country resemblance, sorry
