There's a special kind of feeling playing these maps at 2AM. I can't describe it very well but it's exactly like what you said. It's dream-like. It's magical and ethereal. There was this one map called Autumn 2001 on the GMOD Workshop that I love. It's a PS1-styled map with a simple premise to get beer from a convenience store. My description sounds boring but playing that same map at 2AM made me more immersed than ever. The tranquility of night with the open world of source engine cyberspace. There's something magical about these GMOD maps that were made for fun. The amateur, retro 2000's aesthetics provide an unfamiliar, familiar feeling. Maps like these are why GMOD will always be one of my favorite games of all time.

The nostalgia of seeing an old store or location in Source is something else. A time capsule of a time we will never relive again. Simply looking at the old Mcdonalds menu in the Gmod map brings me wayyy back. I’m pretty sure Mcdonalds now uses boring digital screens lol

My favorite real world maps are the ones created by MDS. I think he's moved on to other things but the Best Buy and the McDonalds custom levels (maps) are awesome because I get a 2005 Source Engine vibe each time I load up one in Garrysmod. They could be updated with new textures but I kinda see them as a historical artifact in a way. Anyway MDS if you're out there. GREAT JOB!

About that comment about games being more competitive, I think you're somewhat on the point. Games in the 2000s most internet users grew up with were geared to be more social spaces, whether that was split screen co-op, couch gaming with friends with Smash or more traditional Fighting Games, MMOs, or if you were a very special kind of person, Second Life. So, maps were generally designed to mimic common social spaces, which would be shops or just recreations of city spaces. Right now, for me at least, games feel a lot more oriented towards exploring system mechanics and (if it has it) combat complexity. The explosion of speedrunning and competitive gaming spearheaded by MOBAs contributed the most to this. What hasn't helped is that now most people have social media apps to compliment their gaming communities so now rather than communicate through chat they use Discord or just browse relevant Twitter tags/subreddits. Since social media is basically creating the 'social space' for free and can maintain it more cheaply due to specialization, those servers running those more 'social' maps have to compete with not only all the other maps, but also social media sites. So, since they're being out-competed by sites that do their job but (speaking on a technical level) better, that mapping style has died off to an extent. Why use VoIP to talk to friends on a CS server when Discord lets you do the same with added functionalities? Why laugh at each other's silly sprays when you can post the image in see previous or immortalize it in a Reddit post?
Still, I kind of miss the old social Trade servers and occasional odd map server TF2 (my primary Source game) used to have when I started playing in 2016. There was nothing that really embodied the feeling of trade_plaza_2 or some guy's recreation of the entire LoZ:OoT map but in Source being populated with 32 players who were all interested in just doing whatever. The communities those maps attracted had their toxic elements, but they were nowhere near as ubiquitous or discourse controlling as they are in social media communities for the same game. The death of this kind of game feel is, I would argue, the biggest, least understood silent tragedy in gaming history and something we'll have to contend with for a very long time.

Man remember when speedrunning was a wierd nische no one really paid any attention to, now you have streamers and youtubers with multimillion views and subs doing it, guess it shows how far we strayed from multiplayer as a social setting to a competitive, I think it truly died when couch coop did.

Once, when visiting a preserved steam railway, after having a picnic lunch at one of the stations along the line, I decided to just walk up and down the platform, taking in the scenery and the peacefulness of a middle-of-the-line station that was empty in the middle of the day. A light bulb lit up above my head, like a cartoon. "I should make this station in Source," I thought, and started taking photos for reference. Something about the tranquility of a preserved 1950s railway station just made my brain immediately connect it to the dreamlike nature and "normality" of those real-life Source maps that you mention in this video. I had stuff like the textures planned in my head at the time, how I would recreate all the details like the signal box, the underground path that lets you get from one platform to the next, all just for some sort of environment art project where I would try to recreate a relatively mundane place like a railway station, just because it was a nice day and I like trains.
I never did make the map (I forgot about the idea), but this video made me remember that I had once had the idea, and to maybe in fact revisit that idea at some time. Cheers, Mr. ratlobber, for making me reminisce on a project I never actually started. :)

Finally, you found the right words to describe it! "Dream like" something about the source engine is messy, its nostalgic look, the same controls and environment, the creepy atmosphere, it all adds to the charm of exploring a source map at 2am. Its all very dreamy and almost bizarre, but I love and adore all aspects of it. Source is the only engine that almost has like a personality element to it, like it gives off a certain touch in all games that are utilizing it.

It's not because Source is necessarily dark or dirty. You can see the limitations people had in 2000's and that's it. Amateur maps contributed to that feel so much and you can see how distinctly surreal, senseless and poorly designed they are. Indeed ahead of its time in a way to predict the liminal spaces definition. Just imagine half of your unfinished maps you done in 2011, and which are likely forever lost by now, would be considered treasure for nowadays liminal and low poly horror fans. And the more "out of sense" layout you have the better. Endless hallways and box-like rooms populated with random props at best. Sounds familiar, huh? Poor perception, poor level design + limitations = liminal space. That's how I see it really.

@@ratlobber Hell, thank YOU for playing it! It was something I made because I was homesick for where I grew up in the 90s. Still makes me very happy seeing people hanging out in it!
