A Shocking Experience Windsurfing Maui - Raw and Unfiltered

  • In all the year I have windsurfed on Maui I have never experience a moment like this. I almost collided with a kitesurfer at Kanaha Beach Park on the island of Maui. Luckily the board that I am riding has a very tight turning radius which saved us from a very nasty collision. We were both lucky to not get seriously injured.

    Wonderful to hear the natural sounds of water and wind and planing board without music laid over top like most windsurfing vids, good job!

    At least the place isn’t crawling with kiters - I sailed in The Netherlands last weekend. Kiting is the biggest group there, kites crashing next to you, sailing downwind out when you are on the wave,…freaking funky! I am glad my home spots in Cornwall have far fewer of them!

    Anyone blaming the kiteboarder, and citing "sailing based" rules is wrong. NONE of that applies once you are in the line-up. Once you are in the waves, it is surfing right of way rules, and the windsurfer was riding the wave, doing bottom turns and cut backs. He had the wave. The kiteboarder was essentially charging into the line up blind, from the back side.

    As a windsurfer and kitesurfer, I'd say that one was on you. Need to look before you turn. When I am kiting in crowded places like that, e.g. Sunset Beach in Cape Town, I make a point of staying away from the windsurfers as you never know when they will turn or when they will fly down the line.

      there are different kind of rules on waves than specified in colreg, whoever is on the wave first has the right of way, if there are more sailors riding the wave the one who is first on the wave (from where it's closing) has the right of way

      When the wind is up (no prone surfers) with breaking rideable waves, Lowers Kanaha is a down the line (rights) break. No sailor or kiter should be up pushing up the line / upwind in the breaking section. The windsurfer was in the right here. The kiter was clueless, not aware of the situation, and in the wrong. Glad no one got hurt. I can see how the windsurfer was surprised and not expecting that situation.

    • @koav
      @koav  Před měsícem +1

      @jeffreywilkinson1471 Thank you for your comment! Choosing between Ho'okipa and Kanaha usually depends on the wave size and wind direction. For instance on the day this video was filmed Ho'okipa was giant with the channel closing out. I opted for Kanaha because I push myself and have FUN instead of sailing to survive and avoid going on the rocks.

      It was a right hand wave and the windsurfer was closer to where it was breaking, so the windsurfer has right of way. The kite was down the line in other words.

      When se wind surfer fell, you can see others riders going from right to the left on the wave.
      To me he just turn without tchecking.
      Also the kiter was downwind of the windsufer, the Guy upwind is responsable of the People downwind.

  • @simoncossettini9680
    @simoncossettini9680 Před 28 dny

    Not sure who had right of way on the near collision. From the rest of the video it looks like the peak is behind you and you were following the forming wave? so the kiteboarder most likely needed to give way. As a kiteboarder I can say that it could have been avoided - looks like he got caught in the moment - unless he is following the break towards you . Either way I am always cautious on the water with other kiteboarders and windsurfers especially when they are on the backhand or a wave is involved. Some get super possessive and are determined to ride that wave start to finish - even though there are plenty of other waves coming.

    Kitesurfer had right of way, they were riding the with the wave moving predictably and you aggressively jibed into them without looking. I don't know how you could look back at this footage and come to the conclusion you weren't 100% at fault.
