It's a special dedicated 8BitStereo upload today, as we honor the great Geoff Follin for one of his best and most praised solo works on the NES, while still being a vastly underrated OST in the grand world of NES music, its Wolverine! You know this soundtrack is absolute stellar, the Follin name always brought quality to these chiptunes, and Geoff's solo work is some of the best on the console, Wolverine stands among as one of his most well known works for the console, and even with only a handful of looping tracks, it is ALL killer, NO filler, the best kind of NES OST. That Title Screen is such a BANGER, and the two main Level Themes are catchy as hell, Geoff really made the two main themes you hear sound amazing to listen to through the whole game.
But of course this upload is specifically dedicated to Geoff Follin's passing last month from pancreatic cancer, as confirmed by his brother Tim. Absolutely devastating news as Geoff along with his brother Tim are among my heroes for NES music and VGM composers, his passing brought me to tears remembering all he did on the NES, SNES, C64 and practically every piece of work he did on 80's and 90's soundchips, he always brought quality despite saying he typically composed quicker than Tim, and like his brother did not think back fondly on his music, well Geoff, with tears in my eyes right now writing this, I can say your work brought joy to my life as I'm sure it did so many people. Let us PLEASE continue to praise and share the music from the Follin brothers, in Geoff's memory and to show Tim how much we loved his brothers work. Dear lord is wolverine cutting onions in here?😭
The rest of the game is still of good quality despite its criticism for its hard difficulty brought on by the lack of invincibility frames when getting hit, but I find that design actually fitting for this kind of game, Wolverine still controls nicely in a loose kind of way to get out of all potential danger, the graphics are super colorful and unique by Craig Houston (also co-designer) and does a nice job representing each character featured with their designs, and to me this is just a great fun title that designer and coder of this game, Kevin Edwards did a great job on despite the short development time I'm sure the Software Creations team was given, you can find all fun tidbits and talk of the games he worked on over at his Twitter ( twitter.com/KevEdwardsRetro ).
As always, thank you to all who support the channel, to my Patrons, but most importantly, I want to give the biggest thanks and love to Geoff Follin, he graced us with amazing and memorable soundtracks we will praise and listen to until the end of time, thanks for everything Geoff... :')

I've been living in a hole for years so I missed his passing; truly saddened to lose one of the greatest minds in all of vg ost's. Honestly, looking back as a 5-7yo the game was too hard for my inexperience, and upon reflection, I only rented it to enjoy the ost. I can say without a shadow of a doubt in my mind this man heavily influenced my musical tastes making me the fan/musician I am today. Genuinely heartbroken. Rest in peace genius of the bits, rest in peace.

Geoff's recent passing is very sad for anyone who ever experienced his music, creativity and raw talent for composing with such limiting constraints. However, those same creations that make us remember the man that is no longer with us, will be the vessel in which his legacy lives on. It's up to us now, in our hands, to ensure that Geoff Follin's musical masterpieces don't get lost to time. Every time we listen to them, show a friend, family member, co worker etc. his music, it's another person that learns, experiences and enjoys his music. And in a way, as long as people still bring him up, relive and enjoy his creations, in a way will make the late Geoff Follin live forever, and in my humble opinion, I believe that is a wonderful legacy to be a part of.

Yes. To this extent, channels like Niko's are vital to preserving an era of music that would otherwise be lost to time and the constraints of physical media.

This composer certainly had a distinct style with his NES stuff. Instantly could tell it's the same guy who made the Silver Surfer OST, along with several other more obscure, but radical NES tunes. RIP. Great music

The Follin brothers music was often the best part of many of the games they worked on. A great example of bad game, fantastic soundtrack is Spider-Man and the X-Men in Arcade’s Revenge on the SNES/Genesis.
Geoff Follin’s passing is really sad. From his brother’s update, it sounds like in addition to being one of the best video game music composers of all time, he was a very loving, devoted family man and he will be very missed by his brother, wife and children. So long Mr. Follin. We’ll always remember your wonderful music!

It's buffling that Follin Brothers went unnoticed in gaming industry. They deserved a big career as a game music composers. Stuff they did on NES was very ambitious, complex, maybe even ahead of it's time. If given an opportunity, they could've squeezed dry sound cababilities of every single retro game console.

I had this game back when it was new, I remember both liking the gameplay and graphics (one thing I noted was how smooth the walking animations were compared to most NES games), and I always loved the soundtrack. I wish it was one of the ones we'd kept, unfortunately it ended up being one the games sold to Funcoland to finance the purchase of Super Metroid in 1994, without my knowledge...
Unfortunate to read about the passing of the composer, pancreatic cancer is the least treatable type as far as I know. My sister-in-laws' father got diagnosed with it late last year and it essentially laughed at the chemotherapy they tried on it, instead it metastasized and spread, now he has 3-4 months to live. An unpleasant way for one's life to end :(

I know this game sucked but I personally loved it. I beat this more times than I could count. It became something of an egg timer for me. What can I do to kill 45 minutes? Play through Wolverine!
And considering the theme to this game is probably the first anthem Wolverine ever had in the medium of video games, it's an ASOLUTE FRIGG'N BANGER!!! And 8 bit to boot. I mean, the OST for this game is better than it has any right to be. But then again, I can say the same for Spider-Man & X-Men: Arcades Revenge. Game was pretty crappy but the OST is down right legendary. And both LJN titles. Although, I gotta say that Arcades Revenge deserves the LJN rap. Wolverine was difficult but possible. Arcades Revenge was borderline unplayable garbage.
