I was routing for Amy and Tammy both, but Tammy just kept dragging everyone down because she wasnât getting the validation that she felt she earned by doing nothing- I kept routing for her but it just felt like there wasnât ever going to be enough support for her to do anything.

@eric Spencer while theyâre definitely response for their condition, it is still incredibly unethical for these TV stations to financially incentivize them *not* to lose the weight.
Worse, on MSHPL, they give them money to buy as much food as they want, and have them eating even more than they normally would (they generally donât have the money to buy that much food all the time as most have no income outside of disability), so TLC is actively encouraging their addiction and further weight gain to get shots of super morbidly obese people eating excessively (even in comparison to how much that person typically eats)

The problem with Kate Hashimoto is that there is a stereotype of Asians being cheap and sneaky in America. Like being too cheap to use beef anc instead use horse and sell it to poor unsuspecting Americans. đ So that episode just reinforced the gross stereotypes. I feel so horrible for Kate. She is a genuine, kind woman and was subjected to HORRIFIC bullying.

I completely understand her cheapness after going through "poverty trauma", some of the show ideas were a little too extreme for me but she was smart to pay off her apartment first.

This is one of the reasons this channel has always been one of my favorites since I discovered it. A combination of the editing, the jokes, and more than that, the sometimes shockingly nuanced look Oompa takes at topics like this. I think what it comes down to is his primary driving goals, to entertain, and to be friendly, I think itâs absolutely awesome how much he interacts with community, but more so the people he talks about, from Casey and even the Vegan Teacher and more, just makes him an open and interesting person to watch. I think itâs incredible that anything that he covers is something I want to watch, because heâs entertaining and informative.

One of my last weight loss options is going to be a bariatric bypass, and any insurance company wants you to spend 10-12 months changing your life habits before getting the surgery. This is just to ensure that they wont be paying for a surgery that will have no effect in the long run, and to help the person learn new diets and form new habits.
IF AT ANY POINT YOU'VE GAINED MORE THAN A FEW (2-3) LBS BETWEEN MONTHLY DOCTOR VISITS YOU HAVE TO START THE PROGRAM ALL OVER AGAIN. There are no exceptions.
I knew that would be nearly impossible for me because I have hella back issues and have limited mobility because of it. I'm finally starting to lose weight but it can fluctuate between visits with my nutritionist and we just work on what's been happening the past few weeks and try to correct.
I don't know what I would do if I did the 10-12 months of positive progress, scheduled my surgery for months later, and because I gained a couple lbs before the surgery they cancel the whole thing and I have do the whole year+ long process again.
It would be devastating. It would cause a complete morale loss for me, personally.

I just saw a tik tok that was a clip of when Amy is saying how mean people were cause she had bugs in her videos and then TLC edited in a bug on her wall. Everyone in the comments seemed to think it was real and genuine and saying how dumb she was or whatever and I was just thinking âhow dumb are you?â Also reminded me of an article I read this morning about how people are âshocked to find out whatâs in McDonaldâs sweet and sour sauceâ and they just found out that it has fruit in it. Like itâs literally also called plum sauce, what did you expect?? Lol

I saw that article about the McD's sweet and sour and read it only cuz I like that sauce and I wrongly assumed that they found out something horrific about it. Nope... She and others apparently assumed the sauce was made with pineapple or mango, but instead it's apricot. Uhm DUH! The ingredients list is right on top. đ Tho still wonder why that's all newsworthy...

What are you talking about? The CEO and shareholders of TLC are public information. Why would they show their face on TV? Their job is to oversee & run the company. TLC isn't run by some shadowy faceless secret mystery person like they were Cobra Commander or Dr. Doom.

i wish that some segments of TLC like My 800 LB Life and 1000 LB sisters wasnt really on air sometimes. most of the time its extremely depressing.
As someone who has and is still struggling with various addictions i can't help but feel that the people behind these programs are monsters.

It's a freak show repackaged for a modern audience.
Find a severely mentally ill, physically malformed or otherwise disabled person desperate or naive enough to sell what little dignity they have left for the promise of financial assistance, then twist and manipulate them into outrageous spectacles.
But its ok; they're "helping" them. The shows give them "independance" and "fame." Sometimes they even get 15 minute meetings with celebrity counsellors with degrees from online diploma mills and superficially talk about their trauma. That means that the public can allow themselves to be as cruel and inhumane as possible, because they're viewership will "help." We can watch guilt free :).
Its deeply upsetting. The shows are generally very classist as well.
yea my grandmother is on tlc "smothered" ((Mary is my gma, Brittney is my aunt) TLC made her shower with her daughter and forced them to pretend as if they had a super close weird relationship (my aunt and grandmother DO NOT get along irl at all)
on top of this they forced britt to pretend hating her step dad. He ended up passing away during the show because of severe illness and now britt looks bad.
I really appreciate you being able to sit here and talk about these people like theyâre just that, people. Most channels would just dehumanize them for the sake of a few views. Keep it up oompa.
Yes they are human and we should have empathy. As a society convincing people being obese is normal is terrifying, end of the day my family is healthy and has been taught better, not like others being fat will effect you outside public transportation and buffets. At this point Darwinism is doing its thing.

Those of who who were old enough to pay attention know the main reason reality TV came about was because studios didnât want to fairly compensate writers. Writers went on strike so studios had to figure out how to make shows that have little to no writing.
Itâs like that thing people say about bullying if you donât stand up for them and just watch them get bullied youâre also part of the problem. Itâs heartbreaking that their just using them for money

I didn't start losing weight while hating myself. Why would you care to better someone you hate? Once I said I'm okay and I'm worth more than my looks I started eating better and moving around more. I've lost 30lbs already and I feel stronger. That's what body positivity is for. Loving yourself enough to better yourself. It's not about the weight it's about the self improvement.

I once fell into depression and started getting fat. One day I ran into my old trainer and he said "you got fat, what happened"? At first it kind of stung, but after thinking about it I thought "He's right, I'm out of shape". I dropped all the weight and have stayed in shape ever since. I feel like TLC is just a symptom of a bigger problem when it comes to entertainment, though that doesn't excuse what they do.
Yea a lot worse things exist than these shows and are far more popular. People also obviously love these shows or they wouldn't keep making them, it's impossible for it to be all hate watching. I think the entire entertainment industry needs some type of reboot or something. And society itself needs to follow better ideologies.

I'm so proud of Casey king. That man fully transformed his life and when I first saw these kinds of videos from tlc. About any of the overweight people. I just felt so sad. Cause to me I see overweight as a sign of coping. Just eating and eating to get your mind off of all the sad stuff. And when I saw how much they all weighed it just makes me so sad. I couldn't imagine living with that much weight. I love walking everyday and I couldn't imagine how awful it would to take about 20 steps and it feel like a marathon. I wish the best of luck to all of them.

I would say it is more your own healthcare system that wants them to die, the reality is a lot of the people on that show probably wouldn't have gotten to the size they are if they were able to afford surgery, therapy or both. I have never watched the show because it is just too sad to me that these people have to parade themselves on tv and humiliate themselves just to get healthcare.

I can confirm that Raycons are perfect, Iâve had them for almost a year now and they fit perfectly, sound đđ, sometimes I even forget I am wearing them. If they are properly charged they last for SO long. 11/10 would recommend.

This was a really thoughtful take on this topic, and I appreciate the effort you made to show the subjects of these shows as the human beings people sometimes forget they are. Great video.
The self hate threads are great for those that love dark humor, that strive in competitive games and talk trash to make jokes. It's a different attitude when the general public aren't like that. I understand and strive on self jokes to improve myself, I make the jokes of myself before others can. This helped me grow throughout my school years. I hope others understand why the darker side of self help is possible as well, but may not be your cup of tea. I sincerely love you, i'm proud of any work you've done that others couldn't reach. Take a photo, keep it, one day someone may need help where you were, and you can show them that "anything is possible if you put your mind to it" mentality.
Wow I'm glad I never watched TLC much. You do a great job showing their more than disgusting way of doing biz. It reminds me of how the history channel changed over the years. Although going from legit historical documentary videos to ancient aliens probably did far less physical and emotional damage.

I'm thankful I found this video, it speaks volumes on how grotesque and low many will go just to get a profit to hoard. There is a consent and contract form that hopefully states some aspects of payments and services; the people are sought out and offered help but it just becomes a twisted genie wish in the end. These shows are often borderline about showing human suffering,, fostering empathy, and profiting off desperations. It's interesting to watch via human psychology, and knowing video edited drama, but just watching their suffering and others kicking their world into harsh chaos really just downspiral everything. Hoarders is another show that I can't emotionally take anymore; while there's help and counselors and more- the huge confrontations, shaming, and quick purging just creates another traumatic effect. Getting rid of trash and such is important, but unless there's long term emotional and mental support (that are provided and not stuck with huge bills), there's just a repeat of that cycle.
Human suffering has always been profitable in one way or another either through judgement, poverty, or emotional manipulation. It breaks my heart often to see and hear how these people are just wanting help but are getting far more damage than they may have had before being filmed.

People live for complaining and judging others so they have learned to make money off of the ignorant. You donât question what you see because you will more than likely believe what you witness first than some random person.
