Your daughter is the absolute cutest!
Our first chickens we ever got were free range chickens and the first night were eaten by a fox. I regret buying into the “free range” idea and now I use common sense over feelings when it comes to my animals and gardening.
Sometimes we all just have to live and learn as we go along, we’ve lost several through the years before we started using the netting

I wanta tell y'all about something I did by accident that turned out kinda cool in my salad patch. Several years ago, I needed to build up the soil in part of my garden so ,,, I unrolled and old round bale all over it. That hay was about 6 inches deep. Then I realized that I had planned to put turnip greens and mustard in that area. I thought about for about ,,, 10 seconds maybe and then just threw the seeds all out in that hay . Them things took off and grew and were the best ones I ever had so I've been doing it ever since.... The turnip roots make right there in the hay and when you pull them up there ain't even any dirt on the roots. By the spring the hay has rotted enough to just turn it under and it sure helps my soil a lot . Y'all keep warm. I think it's supposed to be 18 degrees here in middle Georgia Wednesday morning !!

I had a small cabbage head from the garden last week here in northeast KY. I sometimes wish I was a little more south. Maggie was so cute with her pockets full of eggs.❤
Praying the freezing temperatures don’t kill your greens.
This was a tip I heard. It’s certainly not a for sure thing. But if you have frost if you can water well the night before or early the next morning before the sun hits the plants and melts the ice it can prevent the plant cells from collapsing causing mushy rot in some cases. It’s worth a try.

I am right there with y’all, I can’t turn my chickens out unless I am gonna be out there with them. We turned the middle part of our barn into a coop. About 2 years ago, I had some chicks hatch out and they made it to a good size (maybe 3 months), but mama had them out free ranging and what I thought was a big feral cat was a fox, and got 9 chicks within seconds it seemed. I was just sick! Because those chicks were nice! So now I’m hoping to get a poultry fence like y’all have. Then I’ll feel better about letting them out if I can’t be out there with them. But I love y’all’s set up with the moveable coop. Y’all be safe, in TN. we just got about 4 inches of snow last night, and it’s bitter cold. I just finished up breaking up water troughs. Be safe have a good one.

Your cabbage looks good as well as the onions. Your potatoes should be fine covered up with straw. Grandma and Grandpa used to pour theirs out on the pack house floor and cover them with some old carpets and they kept fine. We're making up for last winter when it stayed warm.

I am in east central Illinois. -7 with a 21 below wind chill as I watch you this morning. That is way better than yesterdays 39 below wind chill. Nice to see some thing green in the ground. I just came in from tending the chickens, they are doing fine but sure don't want to leave the coop.

❤ Watching videos from before I found your channel and the more I watch the more I admire, respect and love y’all! I was thinking about the crops that really “show off” and give you more yield than you can put up that this is really a blessing from God. There are so many hungry people…..some who are living in poverty, some who are unable to garden their own food due to health problems and the elderly who have the “know how” but their bodies are just lacking in strength…. When God blesses our efforts we need to bless others, which I feel you two do. The scripture says when we do it to the least of them we do it unto God. Also, you all in addition to providing for your family are teaching others how to be more independent even if it is nothing more than growing some tomatoes 🍅. Even city folk can put enough tomato plants in a big pot to eat on. There is pride in eating something you have grown, imo. May God continue to bless the wonderful Lawson Family Farm! ❤🙏🏻
I remember growing up my dad would take the onions like what yall got and cut them up and make onion gravy out of them

That cold snap last January took out everything here. I even lost grapevines and butterfly bushes.i live just down the mountain from you all in Burke county.

I'm up in Canada and we just got through 3 days of a bitter cold blizzard. First storm of the winter for us and I'm glad it's over. It's a beautiful sunny, but still cold day here today. Stay safe through your upcoming cold weather. 🥶🌬
Take some of your sawmill lumber and run across the bottom of your plastic on your coop and screw it down to stop the wind from blowing under it 👍

I live in Alberta, Canada and we just had an Arctic front go through for the last 5 days with temperatures averaging-37 celcius with wind feels like -47 to -54 celcius which is about -57F. I’m just dreaming about starting seeds under my grow lights in the next few weeks to plant out in May when its warm enough and no threat of frost.

Good morning y’all. Yes I’m about to go out and pull me a bunch of turnips, a mess of kale and collards before old man Winter gets his hands on them.
Your moveable coop is perfect for your area and Homestead. The monetary loss alone, not counting all the damage preditors would do if they had the run of 17 acres is ridiculous. I consider your chickens to be free range. You give them 30 to 50 different locations round the year I imagine.
Do yall like asparagus? Sow it one time and it produces for 15 years 😄 It’s a “set and forget” crop. Can’t wait for more gardening content! Thank you!

Hey all, I insulate the ground with my carrots potatoes and onions still in the ground I put about 2 to 3 ft of leaves all around them and over them. This insulates them from the cold and the ground from the cold if it's a few feet away from them. That says my root crop for later Harvest. It looks like you all got a good first harvest of the year. Y'all be safe stay warm it's -3 today
We do the same thing in central Mississippi but it must be regional because we never called it that it was just a patch of greens.
We'd hang cabbage in our Root Cellar but we pulled the Cabbage out by the roots and tied it to a string upside down and pulled the a few of the bigger leaves off it would keep up to 5 months
That’s how I tried to do it, not sure why it didn’t keep, maybe I’ll give it another try next year ☺️
Pretty chickens duck tape around the bottom of the plastic I put plastic around my back porch helps with the cold wind

On the Cabbage take the outer leaves and cup it up and put a Twist them or a string and tie it it'll make a firm head and a larger head

Kale dehydrates well. Works great in soups. My husband throws it in his eggs. 😖😂
Ruth Stout wrote some good books on mulching......you might find some hints on mulching to prevent losing plants to cold weather
The greens may last longer in the refrigerator if you cook them first. And, if you use a strip of wood over the edges of the plastic on the coop, and nail the strip down, the wind will not blow the plastic off.

Sure! They are loud and annoying 😂😂😂 but honestly they were raised with chickens since they were hatched, they do bully my chickens somewhat but they all seem to respect each other for the most part, they do a great job of looking out for the chickens, when they sound their alarm the chickens take shelter under the chicken house, it’s pretty amazing to watch, I think they are the reason we don’t have a lot of trouble with hawks because I definitely see them flying around. They are super easy keepers and just do whatever the chickens are doing ☺️ I hope this helps!

Honestly it’s the way Andy’s grandma taught me for them to keep best, I’m not exactly sure the reasoning behind foil vs plastic but that’s how she’s always done it ☺️

No we won’t, they have a good winter coat and a warm place to stay if they want, blankets make me a little nervous especially since they’ve never worn them and they aren’t stalled
