this has everything to do with the purchaser and supplier… nothing to do with the employee getting paid to install the material. the only way the trim guys can be dinged for this is if it was their job to provide the material they use.

A little caulk and a little paint makes a carpenter what he ain’t.

You should know, there is not a whole lot of production level carpenters slowing down to examine trim boards, like a real carpenter does. Back into the CZcams video making, huh? 😄 Long time, no see.

Yes, the level of quality of most trades just keeps going down, but I find it's due to laziness just as much as ignorance so hopefully someone watches this video and thinks, "Hm, yeah, I'll watch more carefully next time." Might be a pipe dream, but I'll keep hoping. And yeah, I haven't been making too many videos, but I've always been sporadic... How has your channel been going?

    • @craftsmanconnection

Technically I have 49 videos. 26 full length videos and 23 shorts. My channel was monetized in October 2022, and for the most part I have been making $135-$160 per month from Adsense.
The weird slightly concerning thing lately is, I was getting 1,000 to 1,800 views every 48 hour period back in Sept 2021, and not counting shorts views. Even after a bunch more videos, it’s been 1.0K - 1.4K views every 48 hours. I have double the amounts of videos, but not double the amount of views. My guess is that there are so many other videos of similar content, that it’s just a competition for viewing eyeballs, since I’m not the only program on CZcams.
I know you have around 125 videos. When we started chatting, you had 114 videos. You made that video for me, and of course I’m curious how much you’re making now. Shooting videos at the job site is pretty easy. Getting around to editing and actually doing the editing takes A LOT of time.

@@craftsmanconnection Yes, so more and more I realize that CZcams doesn't care about DIY videos. At best tutorial videos will get hundreds of thousands of views over their lifetime. Now, this isn't a hard and fast rule, especially if it's a super common issue (How to change a light switch) and you just happen to make a great video about that one thing, but CZcams is driven by entertainment. That's what they know will keep people on the platform and that's what the algorithm is searching for: Engagement or a majority.
So, if you want more views you have to do "viral videos", or story-telling. People will listen to a story while you carve and craft, but they won't listen to ten minutes of a how-to video on replacing a window, or if they do, they won't be coming back since that's someone looking for help, and not the majority of internet surfers.
So, you can become like blacktail studio, John Malecki wood working, etc. and produce high quality story driven narratives along with your work, or you can make DIY videos that won't ever make a lot unless you have exceptional camera work and an engaging personality.
I'll keep making videos that probably never make a lot. However, when I post a video about something dumb like this trim video, it will get 10x worth of views compared to other actually helpful videos, but which don't entertain. People love to hate on you, or what you're hating on in the video, or just mindlessly watch you work if it's cool enough.
So, when I first started talking to you I was making about $400-$500 per month I believe, now it's down to about $300 per month. All of this income is from one video primarily. 99% of my other videos don't make hardly anything. If you see a youtuber doing the same video over and over and over, it's because they've found what the algorithm/people want, and they can reproduce it almost infinitely it seems...
If you keep on going and can craft your persona and video editing into a very gripping story, while also demonstrating your skills, then you have a chance to eventually be recognized by youtube and promoted more, but doing that does take a lot of time and additional knowledge of audio and videography (unless you hire someone to take your footage and make them into a video).
As someone who obviously isn't a pro and could also do with following what I'm about to advise:
The first thing you can do immediately to make your videos better is to make better thumbnails. It's something I've been practicing and still haven't gotten great at, but study the science of thumbnails. The next recommendation would be to get better audio. Jobsites are terrible for audio, but even voice-overs are better than tinny, or echo-y sound. The third would be to keep things short and only show the most important parts of your videos, jumping to new things constantly (they recommend every 3 seconds) is the pinnacle of good video making. Watch Blacktail studios and pay attention to how much is voice over he does and the average clip duration. He constantly story tells.
Now, I obviously don't follow these things, because they are difficult to do, but if you have the drive and time to do them, then it makes a huge difference.

Videos take a lot of time to create (film, edit, voiceovers, upload, thumbnails) and I always wonder what I could have done better. Should they be shorter? Should they have less info, as I can be very wordy? How’s my editing style? Should I add music to whatever parts of my video?
I like to include how much time and money something cost, or how much I charge to do these things. Partially to tell my potential clients what a project like this would cost them, and partially to share with other trades people or new trades people what I charge, so maybe they don’t undercharge and almost lose their financial behind as they’re scared to charge more.
I have always wondered just how many videos would I have to make to replace my contractor income. If 26 regular videos make me $110-$160 per month, how many would I need to make $100K-$150K per year? Holy smokes Batman!

    • @craftsmanconnection
      @craftsmanconnection Před 2 měsíci

By my calculations of my videos and some info from you, it would take 260 videos of my videos to make $1,100 to $1,600 per month. So if I wanted to make $10,000 per month, I would need somewhere around 2,300 videos. If I made 26 videos in 3 years, it’ll only take me about another 90 years to complete that 2,300 videos. 😂😮😢
