@@dr.spectre9697 Not the same. It takes a couple of shaves to get the technique in your fingers. But a word of advice. Don't put any pressure on the safety razor (as you would do on a cartridge razor). Let the weight of the razor do the job. Also the razor needs to be angled about 30 degrees to your skin. As it's head does not pivot. Once you used to it, it becomes second nature.

watch my dad using safety razor, i remember that was the coolest thing, I'm 48 now and decided to give it a try, well, that was one of the smartest move i ever done, I'm enjoying shaving now than I i ever had.

I just shaved with a safety razor for the first time today. It looks intimidating, but the technique feels a lot like shaving with a multi-blade safety razor. But it's amazing! My face doesn't hurt after shaving anymore.

Having never had a father to teach me to shave, I have used electric razors all my life. It's hard asking for help too because people think you should just know this stuff. Seeing this I'm definitely going to give it a try.
In todays day and age full of baby-daddies and single moms raising children, manly influence is much needed.

I'm 22, my mother bought me a bevel saftey double edged razor and it's the best thing I ever got. Being a black guy, getting razor bumps is a pain in the ass -_- at first I got them multi blade razors and I always got bumps no matter how careful I was shaving with the grain...then I got a electric razor for Christmas and I really wasn't satisfied with the shave as I still felt hair on my face. So I went to the barber every week to shave and I decided to ask if he can shave my face with a straight razor. After my face felt so smooth that I never want to use anything else. So a few weeks later my mom bought me the bevel razor. So worth the money :)

I have really REALLY sensitive skin. I found that using a beard trimmer as a way of taming my beard was the only choice I had, or so I thought. I finally tried a safety razor with shave soap and brush. Once I got the hang of using it, I found that it really WAS possible for me to have smooth skin again, without irritation, cuts, razor burn, or even acne. Some people don't like it because there are more steps involved than shaving with a normal razor. Just make it a part of your morning ritual. If you need a quick shave and don't have the time fore a safety razor, your Gillette disposables will be happy to take you back.

At stan vanalstin, some of us men are required by our profession to be clean shaven, police, fire, ems, military for example. Doesn't make us less of a man because we are clean shaven, and thos is an enjoyable way of shaving.
I feel bad for men who basically depend on their beards in order to look manly. Real men have the privilege of choice.

Once you've done it a couple of times you become so confident with it that you can't even imagine cutting yourself (kind of like most fears). Congrats on taking the plunge!
Buying a safety razor was a really good investment for me. The difference between the razor I now have and the disposables I used to use was like night and day. Trust me, the initial cost is higher, but safety razors cost less over time, and you have tons of options for razors, blades, and soaps/creams. Not to mention that you get much closer of a shave. I recommend buying one!
Used several expensive disposables over the years. Got a safety razor for christmas, so I've been putting it to use. Best shave I've had by far.
I felt the same way in the beginning Rene. It took me some time to get the hang of it. My first shaves I was irritated and bleeding. But once I found the right technique, cream, razor and blades that worked for me, everything changed. It does take some trial and error at first, and each element plays a role in the experience. Keep at it, you'll get it, I know you will!

@@artofmanliness I think single blade gillette gaurd razor does good job with a close shave like safety razor as well as safety like gillette mach razors plus very cheap machine as well as blade cartridges. Rest alway's brush+cream+water is best.

I started shaving with a safety razor a few days ago and I love it
Tried this method when i saw the set going for a much cheaper price than those gillette ones. Cut my face up a few times on my first try but eventually got the hang of it. A much smoother and quicker shave than your regular blades.
Started after reading about this on AoM way back. Saved a ton of money and still got a few of the bumper pack of blades I bought yrs ago.
If shaving after a shower, no need to warm the blade but on cold stubble it definitely helps. Much closer shave then the modern razors so far.
Till now even though i had all the necessary shaving resources like Shaving Soaps and a safety razor.But i did not know how to get a good lather from a soap.I had many efforts to learn to shave using safety razor.I have searched for many videos for the same on youtube.None of them were so informative as yours.other videos which i found were either trying to market their products or were not clearly mentioned proper step by step methods.I recommend everyone to watch this video.An Ultimate Video!

Great video. I have carried my safety razor, a shaving soap bar and a pack of blades, and shaved with cold water in the forest with these simple items. Not only you shave like a man (and your grandad), but your face feels awesome after it!

Guys, try this. 1. Wet the face to soften the beard. Pat dry. 2. Apply a tablespoon of ordinary olive oil. Smear it all around and get your face good and greasy. 3. Wash your hands with ordinary soap. To your face, apply a thin coat of soap lather - very fast, just pat it on quickly. 3. Use your double-edged safety razor and shave. I guarantee this is the smoothest shave you will ever get, and it will cost you pennies per shave. I discovered this because I wondered how the ancient Greeks and Romans were able to shave without soap (it hadn't been invented yet.) The key is oil. Olive oil, which you can get from your kitchen, works very well, but any kind of oil will work too, such as apricot oil or almond oil. Once you try this, you'll never waste money on expensive razors or worthless shave creams again.
I use a mixture of jojoba oil and caster oil as a preshave and it works great ‘A Close Shave Every Shave’
The original AoM article convinced me to try a traditional shave, and I'm so happy with it! I always had a raw, pink face after shaving with disposable razors and foam-in-a-can, but it's never happened with my safety razor. I actually enjoy shaving, a ritual I avoided previously.
I've thrown out all my temporary razors, and begun pestering all my male friends to try it this way. Many thanks, AoM!

About to make the switch. I've been using Harry's razors, which are nice, but I've had enough of razor burn on my neck.
I'll occasionally shave with these newfangled safety razors, but my shave is usually better and more comfortable with my trusty straight-edge. When I'm too lazy to sharpen my blade though, these safety razors do the job fairly well. Plus even though a single sharpenable blade is always the most cost effective, even these double edge safety-razor blades are still much MUCH cheaper than the modern 9 blade nonsense. I know it's only 5 or so, but I still remember when they came out with two then 3 and only had 5 as a joke on Saturday Night live or Mad TV or something, and now they actually have 5. Completely unnecessary though, and proves that newer isn't always better, sometimes it's just lazier.

Finally got a safety razor and it is the best shave I have ever gotten. My beard is really coarse and I always seem to have stubble when I use multi-blade razors. This time it was very smooth.

I really enjoyed this video! It made me feel like I was in school again watching one of those instructional safety videos :-) I just started shaving with a safety razor about a month ago and I'll tell you this: I will NEVER go back to cartridges!!! Not only were my cartridges waaaaaay too expensive but I was tearing my face up. Razor burn and razor bumps every time I shaved! Now my face is baby smooth and bump free. It takes you longer to shave because you have to be really careful but it's worth it.
This is amazingly well done in many ways.. kudos to the artists!

Im 19 and I've been using a safety razor since i was like 16, always used to watch my grandpa as a kid, then my father who is in the military and shaves every day suggested that I try out safety razors rather than the other bullshit razors, life changing 😂
My grandpa's safety razor was nowhere to be found, but I got a Merkur 34C for Christmas. I'm sold! Noticeably smoother and more precise than a cartridge razor. It's a wonder that cartridge shaving ever caught on.

I bought an Edwin Jagger safety razor today and used it a few hours ago. Fucking awesome! Considering that I haven't shaved in a week and looked like a vagrant, the results were amazing. The whole set up was: 40 dollars for the razor and it came with 5 blades, 6 dollars for 10 blades, and 9 dollars for Edwin Jagger shaving soap. I didn't get a brush, so I used my fingers. I can tell now that soap will last me a lot longer than the shaving gell and won't explode in my bag if I travel. I needed more cartridges for my shitty Schick so that would have been like 18 bucks for five at Rite Aid. So I threw it out. My dad has been using the same safety razor since I born over 30 years ago, and he tends to hoard packs of blades. Thanksgiving when I see him, I'll leave with a few packs that he probably doesn't know he has in the bathroom closet. So I may never pay for blades ever again, lol.

mrdannyx3, How’s it going with the new razor? There is a learning curve for DE shaving. I hope you have stuck with it! Not all blades and shaving creams are the same. You might have to experiment a little bit to find the best fits for you-every face IS different. Good luck!👍
Profe Sam hello! I’ve actually stuck it to it extremely well! Ever since I first ordered it, I have no touched a single Gillette razor. I get such a smooth shave and I feel so much cleaner after a shave with DE razor! I always use to have razor burn and now I never do! Also on top of everything else the razors are SOO much cheaper! I will literally never go back to standard shaving.
Mrdannyx3, it’s great to hear how well it’s going for you! Stick with it. Watching these videos is a great way to see new products and techniques. Slowly make changes in your shaving regimen and try new products to fine tune what works FOR YOU. Remember: there’s not just one right way to do things. Only what you discover works best for YOU. I enjoy having a few minutes to myself each day to experience some aromatherapy and enjoy the experience whether it is a pause in the morning before jumping into the hectic pace of most days or a chance to take a breath at the end of the day and let my motors idle down. Nowadays, with the lockdown, I look forward to shaving even more. And you don’t have to spend a great deal of money. There are plenty of inexpensive and reasonably priced shaving products out there.
I use a safety razor because it's the only way I can shave without getting irritation or a sloppy look. I've tried all cartage razors, from 2 blades to 6, all kinds of electric razors. when I switched to DE shaving I got no more irritation and no more ingrown hairs, my face actually looks clean for once. DE shaving may take longer, but I no longer regret shaving, it's a whole new experience that's relaxing. Other forms of shaving may be faster, but I dont need to trade comfort for speed. Being 100x cheaper then cartage shaving is just an added bonus

This video is just the beginning their are a LOT of good videos out there that offer different techniques for various situations. For example multiple passes are need for a really close shave.
I have a really big mug used for things like cappuccino or soup and it works really well for building a lather. It's more like a steep sided bowl and quit a bit larger than a typical shaving mug.
It honestly feels like you’re not even shaving. You just feel the smooth exterior gliding over your face and a satisfying “hsssss” sound, and boom! There go facial hair! It’s actually mind-blowing
Tried it first time today! I had quite enough of 'raking my face with a rusty butter knife' so I bought a Muhle Safety Razor. I was quite nervous actually after reading the manual and seeing a lot of bloody warning pictures. But the result is very nice, and probably will improve with practice.
Can confirm. I'm a new DE shaver as well (been doing it for a few weeks now) and your technique will improve with more shaves. A word of advice: When shaving, do it away from any noise so you can hear the blade do it's work. If you aren't hearing the desired noise, slightly adjust your angle until you hear the blade cutting the hairs.

I just got my I-barber Sheffield wedge straight razor in the mail today. It's over 150 years old. Still gives an incredible shave.
This article is what turned me onto the site a few years ago. Had the hardest time finding a safety razor but ended up finding one at Sally's Beauty Supply out of all places a couple years back. Still getting the razor burn but I think it's because I tend to apply pressure and I'm using the cheap stuff for shaving cream. Also I noticed with the gel shaving cream it felt like I was applying the razor to an ice block.
How the heck did I get recommended this in 2019
I use that Brute after shave, the one in the green bottle.
Brut is nice, but I prefer Aqua Velva and Old Spice myself. Old Spice and Brylcreem or Aqua Velva and Groom and Clean are good scent/ hair product combos.

Awesome, that Parker 99R in the video is the actual one I've been using ever since I started using a safety razor, it's quite the hefty razor.
The original AOM post converted me a couple years ago. I've never looked back. It does take a bit of practice and some trial and error to figure out what will work best for you as far as style of lathering (face or mug), how many passes, what type of blades, and so on. Personally, I use Astra blades (I find them sharper than Derby and smoother than Feather) and I go for a new one after three shaves.

I have improved a lot since then. I personally use Astra blades as opposed to whatever my razor came with, I am gentile and not too fast, I use Barbersol cream and spray it into a cup and mix it with my brush before applying to my face(shave soap and tube creams never helped) afterwords I use both a gel and a splash to protect from a rash. It's a longer process, but it works well
Of course I still shave with a jar of Vaseline
next to me, just in case.

Been safety razor shaving for a week and still get bloody :( It's always either on my jaw line where my cheek and neck meet or below my bottom lip/chin. I might have to buy a styptic pencil. Also my face always feels hot after! I might try products with menthol/eucalyptus and sticking with 1 pass until I can get the blade angle right...

Kadyn Rumph Well right now I'm using Gillette 7 o'clocks but I also cut myself with Astra SPs. I bought a sampler pack.
Cole Byre I've never tried those exact blades, however I highly recommend Murker blades or Feather brand blades. I have found that the high quality Japanese steel of the Feather is best for me, but we all have different opinions, and facial hair.
if I may give a recommendation, buy the styptic pencil. I have a mole on my jawline that I've been irritating for 3 days now so I use it daily. it will sting like all hell at first but you get used to it. I've been shaving twice daily with my old gillette super speed and 7 o'clock super platinum blades as well as bic chrome platinum. try the chrome platinum blades too. they're incredibly smooth and sharp.
michael z Thanks for all the tips! Yup I have a mole in the exact same spot halfway down my jawline. I'll have to remind myself to get one next time at the drug store. Changing to a shave soap with menthol completely cured the burning sensation I was getting though.

VDH is a great set to begin with, I think most people get introduced to wet shaving with it. It was my first set, and still my favorite puck of shaving soap.
