  • How to carve telemark turns takes a lot of practice but with these tips in part 3/4 you will improve especially on hard packed snow or icy conditions.
0:26 Telemark technique starts with a good lead change and how to put most of our body weight on the outside ski. This was tip #1
0:47 Tip #2 focussed on how to add more pressure on the outside ski by angulating. This is the key to go from carving on groomers to carving on hard pack or icy conditions
1:09 For Tip #3 I will talk about how to use the inside edge of our rear ski. This will help us create more edging but also it will free more space to angulate more.
1:35 Big toe, little toe tip by Mike and Allen Telemark Tips
1:55 Inside knee as a lever
3:15 Exercise #1 practice on the flat
3:36 Exercise #2 use the inside knee in a slipping motion. Focus on the suttle movements needed to put angulate the inside knee.
4:03 Practice the inside knee movement in different situations.
4:48 Common mistake. focusing too much on the inside knee and not creating hip angulation.

In this series of telemark videos, I’m going to give you my best tips to improve your carving.
So that you can go from a intermidiate parrallel telemark turn to an advanced carved turn.
By loading most of your weight on the front foot, we are making sure that we have the most pressure on this outside ski.
But if we are not using the inside ski, we are missing out on more grip and a better general position.
To edge the inside ski, we need to move the inside knee. It acts like a lever.
This movement of the inside knee will be the starting point to get both legs working together.
So it will create better knee angulation for both knee and it will put our legs in a position to augment the hip angulation.
See this page on my blog to learn more about how to carve on telemark skis.
In the 7 flaws of telemark, I talk about edge pressure in flaw #6.

Remember that the inside knee is just a way to increase edging but that tip one and two are still the foundation to create that ski edging traction.
    -
On alpine skis, they will sometimes put 100% of the weight on their outside ski. On telemark, because of the telemark squat, we can't do that. But overloading the front ski will really make the ski edge bite into hard packed snow.
    HOW
To do this, practise your lead change Moving you chin over your outside ski on a low incline slope, such as a cat track or a VERY easy green run. As soon as the lead change happens, load the front ski by moving your shoulders over your outside ski. You will feel how strongly the ski wants to bite into the snow and how strongly it wants to carve.
    COMMON ERROR -»
Having hands too low at the end of the turn. I give plenty of exercises to practice how to use your hands from a quiet upper body to a dynamic hand movement, bringing your hand up high in front of you at the end of the turn.
These hand movements and upper body stability will really help with the position of your shoulders throught out the telemark turn.
Telemark skiing is a downhill skiing technique with a binding that allows for the heel to lift of the ski.
    There's many king of equipmenent.
I use NTN equipment and 75mm equipment.

Good stuff! Just got back on Tele's today for the first time in many years Don't have a lot experience maybe a dozen outings many years ago. My takeaway today, being on modern equipment (modern ski, stiffer boot, setp in binding) is I can ski it more like Alpine Dominant pressure on the outside ski gives you grip and carve, and the balance to dial in what you want on the inside ski Outside ski felt like alpine. Carving on softer snow was easier than I expected. I tended on this quite easy snow to not retract the inside ski very far whether that is ideal or not.

Best tele tips of all time! My opinions: Tip 2 recap is the most important of all, and the position shown at :54. It's the foundation of good tele skiing. Lot's of ways to do it but without this position tele skiing cannot be done well. Most of the errors I see on the hill stem from this, including my own skiing. If you can't get your uphill hand forward it's a telltale sign. Drive the uphill had forward to get the correct upper body position, that's how I think of it when I ski.

Hi René, I've been watching your videos for several years now, at first they just appeared on my searches, then I started to consciously check Absolutetelemark on my gear and technique researches. After the years I can say that your advice is great and I thank you for it, it's quite likely the best on available online, comprehensive, precise, not biased and fun to watch. Getting a pair of Meidjo bindings (where you are perhaps a bit biased but for good reason) was the best gear decision I've made and you helped me confirm what otherwise would have been an intuitive and emotional decision. Thank you, and keep it up!!

This video helped me so much. Long story : I was on my second last day of telemarking during winter holiday in France. I'm quite good on blue and red slopes, but still having trouble going into steep icy black slopes, also trouble with off slope telemarking in bad snow and powder. I use a meidjo 3.0 with alpine heel , this way I can cheat and lock the heel when its too hard for me . Then this video pops up in my feed, I watch it , and at 1:34 I get the revelation ! I imediately go back to the slopes, and there you go, free heel in steep icy black slope, with all my weight on my front leg. Same for off slope skiing, finaly nailed it thanks to correcting my body position (I mostly learned telemarking alone). Next time, I'll work on the back knee thing. Thanks and greetings from France !

@@Absolutetelemark I gotta tell you Rene, this tip in particular (along with the last couple) have *really* helped me progress my technique. You are so right, the “big toe little toe” thing is a good descriptor, but doesn’t say anything about how to achieve the sensation. As soon as I started to pay attention to angling the inside knee toward the snow, then I felt the little toe pressure!

Standing up vs staying low between turns? For me, I ski with much better balance and technique when I stay low.

    • @nadimsiddiqui1875
      @nadimsiddiqui1875 Před rokem

Staying low is very tiring, and not so great in moguls(its a long way up and down. Also staying low is how I learned on old cobra bindings. NTN is better more upright for me; much less tiring now that I am older!
