    Hey I just came here to thank you sincerely for all of the work you’ve put in to helping riders of every level.
    As someone now in my 40s, who used to only be able to ride once every year or two, I never felt like I was progressing beyond a beginner level.
    I moved to Norway a couple of years ago right around my 40th birthday and have been devouring your videos, getting up to my local ski hill two or three times a week after work the last two seasons. Practicing your methods, reciting your teachings in my head with each run. Sometimes pulling up your videos on my phone right there on the lift or on the piste.
    It’s been by turns frustrating, exhilarating, humiliating, inspiring and painful. But I could feel progress being made. I just spent the last 3 days at one of Norway’s biggest resorts and everything just sort of clicked. I rode harder than I’ve ever ridden with a sort of confidence I haven’t felt before. No blacks, but I shredded blues and reds of varying conditions over the last 3 days, even conquered the flats. Zero falls. All carves, gripped turns, always felt in control.
    My head is still spinning, I never thought I’d get here. Thanks again for your commitment to improving people’s riding.

      Same here! 48 years old and riding better than I rode in my 20s thanks to watching Malcolm’s videos and trying my best to apply bits and pieces on the 8 or so days I get in the ridiculously short season here in the Virginia and West Virginia area of the US. Always a good day when we get a new Mr Moore video.
    About skidded turns. They are a required part of the arsenal and not being able to do them smoothly shows the rider that they are lacking in edge control/feel and should work on that.
    4:34. Essential technique when riding the steeps. Quick edge change, carve the front and then control the speed with the rear and repeat. Not being able to do this results is riders who endlessly side slip down steeps and cause skiers to moan at us for removing all the fresh snow!

      @jordanmorrow4757 Před 8 měsíci +3

      I’m definitely no expert but if you’re talking about narrow like a catwalk then you just kinda pick a rail and pick a line, if it’s steep and narrow then kinda depends on skill and comfort level when it comes to speed, I started by leafing it, then quick skidded turns, then small carved with the nose pointed really down but also kinda depends on the scenario sometimes I’ll speed check sometimes I won’t sometimes I’ll have to make a skidded turn if there’s people, but definitely once you’re more comfortable with speed I’d say you’d just carve through it with tighter carves

    • @wtfer25
      @wtfer25 Před 7 měsíci

      Im no expert, but i would say try making the c turn more open so you can stay in a more narrow line, or flat base it. If youre pickung up speed e brake rq then keep going

    • @ProgramKiraTV
      @ProgramKiraTV Před 6 měsíci

      Also non expert or instructor I’d say something to nail down is S turns, but like without fully changing edge to cross whatever catwalk or other narrow section and building comfort with quick skid “speed check” transitioning back into heading down the narrow section. Almost to where the full edge to edge transition S turns become elongated like a wiggle for small adjustments in direction while looking ahead and trying to predict where you should go. People behind you are responsible for avoiding you, don’t worry much about them but stay to the inside of the mountain if you’re going slower

I'm still not where I'd like to be - There's too much skid in my turns, but I can see the progression, and I know what I need to work on. Your "Early Edge Change" and "Short Turn Videos" were instrumental in helping me get to this point today. I only skidded out a couple of times today when I was trying to carve on a slope that was too steep (for me) and also too narrow, in slushy conditions. Thanks again.

    I'm at the beginning of my snowboarding journey with something like 5 hours of actual riding time. I learned so much from your videos so my last visit to snowboarding just few weeks ago was a blast. After learning about posture and especially the 'levers on your feet' technique I managed to enjoy riding instead of just trying to survive the ride. I still crashed and broke 3 ribs, but luckily it was just minor fractures and near the end of my trip so last day I had to take it really easy.
    After this video I can understand my mistakes even better, next year I might learn how to jump or how to survive bumpy slopes as in how to hold balance and posture in very unstable slope.

    Ahh... Thanks for the video, I've never had any professional lessons but I got to this point but never knew what its called. - ie Gripped turns. I use this on mogels and icer places whereby if i come across ice the board doesn't come under you and slip out, instead you release the angle and go more across/down the piste (increasing speed), ie traverse/ride over the icy condition.
    When you eventually get to less icy patch you can initiate the transition/turn and carry on your S's, obviously this is in a matter of a few meters so its about feeling when its the right time to turn and let the board ride without sliding/skidding.
    Edit: Before this "click" moment happened to me (and I see it now in some of my more novice friends), they brake harder into skidded turns and force the stop. They lose momentum and ultimately confidence in turning. Start to lean back, board come under you and fall over etc etc etc. It's a downward spiral really, very annoying.
    The way I found the answer was by going fast through it (being silly) and having that momentum to do the technique. My rationale was if i fall anyway it's nearly as fast on my bottom as it is on the board (ie black/double black runs) so I may as well go fast, not fight gravity/the mountains and try to make the turns. :)
    PS I fell many, many times on icy blacks, speed is just as fast on your bottom so you may as well try it on your board and have more control....

    Malcolm, hi. Thank you so much for your work and explanations. You have opened up a huge amount of information for me. I have a request. Could you tell me in detail how to move correctly and control the speed in places resembling a narrow halfpipe. I often come across it that I find myself in such places, such as in the forest, when there was no snow for a long time. People roll gutters between trees and it is very difficult to control the board and control the speed there. Because of this, I often get into trouble - I fall, and sometimes I collide with trees. Thank you, Malcolm. I studied lots of tips from your video. Now I can smoothly ride in black diamond trails(use very tight and short S shape turn), but when I started trying some strict double black diamond pistes/ some off-piste with trees, what scared me was my board was accelerating far faster than single black diamond trails(the slope is very Steep). And usually, it is bumpy/with moguls. I have to spend more time building the grip platform and also need to move across the slope more to reduce the speed, which reduces my edge change frequency, and my turns become far wider than single black trails; the problem is, some double black trails are VERY narrow, and with rocks/trees, I have to use very short turns, if I do that, the speed will burst out easily. I believe I was doing the early edge change rightly and using a tight posture with lower weight mass. Is the problem of twisting? or it is phycially hard to ride slowly in very narrow&steep slope? Thank you again.

    Another great video Malcom! I really like how you have broken this one down.
    I feel as though I am able to control the toe edge turns quite well, moving from carve to speed check and back to carve (or anything between) within the same turn. Carving for me has such a clear feeling, I would describe it as though I feel like the board is locked into it's turning radius, and increasing or decreasing the pressure I apply on the edge changes that radius. I just can't seem to carve out the heel edge yet, everything I try results in skidded turn, but mostly I get this strange side to side wobble from the front of the board when I try engage a carve on the heel edge. This says to me that my weight is too far back, but something is out of whack, either with my weighting or body position and I just can't figure it out.
    I'll be in Val Thorens for a week from this coming weekend and really looking forward to trying out some of your lessons/drills, and advancing my skills that little bit more!

    • @gtj1
      @gtj1 Před rokem +2

      Something that helped me a lot with my heel edge control was making sure to look and point my head in the direction I want to go, I was constantly looking down the slope when on my heel edge which caused my posture to be all wrong and thus enable to hold an edge on steeper slopes. Having good posture and alignment makes a world of difference but I do think heel edge carving is generally more difficult.

    I've been battling with this a lot. I have only been snowboarding for about 4 weeks now and I feel like I still skid a lot of my turns. I think mostly this is because I'm still afraid of going too fast and have trouble controlling my speed. I've tried cutting up the slope a bit after my turns to reduce my speed, but then I have to do a pretty aggressive turn after cutting up the mountain.
    I'd love to toss you a suggestion for a new video. Evasive Maneuvers! I'd love to see some techniques on how to get out of a sticky situation fast, such as when you're approaching the edge of a trail and about to fly off it, or when you're about to collide with someone, etc. Is counter rotation actually useful when trying to whip yourself into a new direction quickly for an emergency?

    I just returned from Jackson Hole with 3 days of lessons. I think my toe edge was really great, I could feel the carve across the piste, I curved up at the end, if I tried down unweighted turns, I could feel even more reverse camber as I straightened my legs and pushed into the board as it went across. However, the heel side was another story. First, I looked downhill a lot and would venture diagonally across piste and gain speed and never feel the arc, and the slowdown arc prior to new turn. I really had to force myself to look across the piste, which changed everything in that regard. I started going more horizontally when I looked across the piste, doesn't make sense to me in a physics way, but it worked. Still wasnt fully engaged on edge carve.
    My problem is I have trouble bending my knees and staying stacked, I tend to bend at the waist as well, forward towards toe edge of the board. I plan to widen my stance to see if that makes it easier to sink down, with my weight stacked over the heel edge. I'm 55, so not sure if it is a flexibility, balance thing why I do this. I wasn't falling or out of control, but I definitely was sliding lots on my heel edge turns, and not carving.
    I used to lift weights and an familiar with proper squat technique, front and back squat, but I'm out of practice.
    Any ideas or tips?
    Thanks

      On the toe edge you can't get as low without the hips going back, and if they do sometimes drop back if you absorb a bump for instance, it doesn't necessarily matter. And the more ankle flex you have and the more you can bend the knees you can still keep the hips stacked over the board whilst letting them drop back slightly!

    Nice, my board just wants to haul axx. I think need to go to an extruded base 152 max.
    When its steep and choppy, it gets scetchy to make the turn, so i unweight and flip tge board in one fell swoop like a 160deg turn, but I know its not that steep to do that move yet.

  • @PhilippUnterreiner
    @PhilippUnterreiner Před rokem +7

    Do you ever ride alpine boards with hard boots and double positive stance angles? It would be so interesting to get your perspective on the change in body mechanics, board performance and the ability to carve on those boards in comparison to freestyle boards. I feel like there is a natural limit of what can be achieved on a freestyle board with soft boots and the body mechanics that come with a duckish side-on stance (vs. a front-on alpine stance applying pressure through the sides of the boots)

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  Před rokem +2

      No I haven't, I have been experimenting with forward angles a bit more recently though, basically for me the jury is still out, I need to spend more time with the forward angle. I think there are positives, but you can definitely still get good results with soft boots and a less forward stance too. Plus I've also found there are definite negatives to forward angles. But it depends what you want to do, for all out carving on grippy terrain, forward facing binding angles, and even hard boots, probably will get you the best results!

      Give the board a quick wax, no need to scrape until after a quick reheat next season, everything should be pretty good, make sure it's all in a dry place. But also your boards won't disintegrate if you don't do this, I don't always, so don't stress too much!

    Hey Malcolm, so after watching a couple of your videos I had an epiphany the other day, after quite a few years of riding …I took a look at the tracks I was leaving behind and I realised that when I’m on my toe edge specifically, instead of a nice smooth carve, I end up mostly skidding my turns. The truth is I like going fast so I use it a lot as a speed check but I’m guessing it’s the fear of falling flat on my face by not holding my balance, that holds me back from leaning forward enough and bending my knees. What I’m thinking is, would it actually be easier if I lower my entire posture like on a squat position or just bending my back foot mostly and then trying it out?

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  Před rokem

      Yeah those things will help, but if you have a bad habit at the edge change - you'll likely be counter rotating to make a speed check - which means you need to get the edge change right first to then be able to direct the board around the arc of the turn

      @@stophumpingthelaser start with the edge change, get that right - across the slope, and then start the turn. Start with a big carved turn on mellow terrain as then all you need to do is make a lateral movement over the board, then you can work on getting those turns smaller. But the turn starts with the edge change, so get that right!
