Dynasty Warriors 7 Review

- It's my first review on a franchise that I have a love-hate relationship with. I mixed the review with a bit of information about the series as a whole as well. Saying that, what's more to say other than it's a review on a repetitive series from a disgruntled fan.

The main issue i have with the recent Dynasty Warriors games is that if you look at the mini map it looks empty. If you go back to Dynasty Warriors 2 and look at the map it's full of Blue and Red units. Right now it's just an officer followed by 30 or so soldiers that die in 1 hit and then there's the bases which have 20 odd soldiers in at a time. I just hope that they ramp up the number of soldiers for next gen.
DW7 is almost 10 years old now.
I do agree on your points. DW 7 did make some improvements. The story was biggest one for me. In previous installments, I was like "Whatever, so-and-so died blah blah, can I get back to killing things?" I felt more of a connection with all the characters this time around. When a character dies in this one, I actually feel something for the character.
This is the best game review I've ever watched. I personally loved the dynasty warriors series, but I do believe that after 5, everything just went ****. The characters and weapons got more ugly and unrealistic, and that alone just made we wanna stop playing. I think you review was great and really representative of the actual product. Good job!

Excellent review. In-depth and to the point. Funny too and had good editing - good stuff! I'd be interested to hear your take on DW8. I haven't played DW since 5 but DW8 should arrive in the mail sometime soon. Hopefully a return to form for DW!
Hey, sosmeone... please help. i cant install game, launching autorun.exe, click on 1-st button and... nothing. autorun just turns off. System: win xp x32, Zotac gt440 gddr3 1gb, amd athlon 2 x2 3.01 GHz. 4 gb ram. what i need to do? i dont want to set my OS to win7, i want to launch dat install on xp!
Unless you max out each attribute (atk, health, defense, speed, and power), is there be a point when characters will be unable to gain these points, even when picking up the drops from officers?

How do you unlock every character ?
What do you think of dynasty warrior 7 extreme legends? Improvements? I heard it is better because you can choose your character for any mission.
What does extremes add?
@cajunoli The "original" video was sped up to fit the time constraint and I didn't like the volume in some parts, so I re-edited and made the video back to its original speed. I also corrected myself on the Fame tidbit since I got that part wrong (although I still find fame useless).
How do u play story mode

In the main menu of Xtreme Legends there is a Remix mode.You select it and then it will ask you to insert the Dynasty Warriors 7 disc into the Ps3.You take the Xtreme Legends disc out and insert the Dynasty Warriors 7 disc in.After its done extracting data it will ask you to insert the Xtreme Legends disc back in.Then on the Xtreme Legends menu you get Story Mode & Conquest Mode on Xtreme Legends.Which means you get to play these modes with the 3 Wei Characters.

@PrismaticDragonfly I'm sorry I didn't mean to generalize. I know any diehard fan is expected to defend something they believe was out of the scope of their belief. I know everyone got their own opinions and I do love the series, but this is how I felt about the game.

I like the old layouts that they had in the others. DW3 was the first video i ever really learned and got into at a young age. I miss it :(
What is free mode about?
hey you can get +8 on conquest mode, i got a few times.... it's really rare, but i have gotten it sometimes... still pisses me off how most of the time you get +2 or +1 though...
@Lightgamete Yes, we do. I have yet to play the games on the current gen consoles and after seeing your watching this GREAT review, I'm wondering if DW6 might be a better alternative. No other media source or youtube channel has posted such a detailed and honest review. Thanks for it!

@Lightgamete a party member is someone of your playable party.. an ally is someone who is simply helping you.
you can play as them true, but not in the same way as empires.. Empires has a very very different style boards ..
In conquest mode you choose to be a character and go around doing missions while gaining gold and fame.
Empires.. You have a leader and officers, and others are on the map and the objective is to defeat everyone. you can choose to be a character that (cont)

you know, i had forgotten about this game for the longest time, and yes, i agree, with you about wu ending, but on the other hand he meant the part and peace time while he alone enjoyed her, but the way they did it, just seams so so wrong. and yes, 100% agree with you about the difficulty rating. in the past games,it was the only way to unlock lvl 10 weapons on 4, and and to get the secret enhancing items once certain cirtera were met. like the wind scroll that added reach to your weapon.

Great review. Totally right, when is dynasty warriors going to have all characters to be. I played 8, 7, 5, and 4 but there isn't that many characters to choose from. I wished koei made all the officers you can't become playable or at least the officers that were most famous for their work that impact the chinese war back in dynasty era. Characters like the entire sima family, yan liang and wen chou, zhang bao and zhang liang,etc. Must be added to the roster cuz they are extremely important in their role for the game. If there is even a dw 9, i reccomend a bigger roster with no fake characters that dont even exist like pang de and zuo ci, an online conquest mode where players can construct and build their own land and fight each other out to seize land, character customization mode, build your own warrior, and make ai smarter. Please consider this koei.

Nice review XD I too have a love/hate relationship with this franchise. I have DW games 3-6, plus two 'Empires' spin-offs of the game. Looking back, DW4 was probably my favorite - it's a fun game, had some things added for replayability, better voice acting, etc. But tbh, I'm stunned that I got so many installments of the game, because they're all more or less the same thing. That's why DW6 was and will remain my last, until they revolutionize it or something (DW 7s not doing it).

Well I've ordered Dynasty Warriors 7 for the PS3, this review sure has been useful in letting me know what to expect from the game. Can't wait to LP it!
Oh man, you said most of the things I want to say about the game. The combos really suck because some weapons don't combo well, so you have to ditch weapons you like if you want stats boost. Although, Cai Wenji is a historical poet (although I question including Bao Sanniang who was never in Romance of the Three Kingdoms).
Can someone explain why dw6 was bad?
@imrichyournot what do you mean-im just asking suggestions for dw8, that's all XD. How am I being a spoiler? Dw8 is still being designed-I know nothing about it :L

Chronicle mode is quite similar to Empires XD

Not only do you mention the bad points (though I don't consider the grinding bad. I rather enjoy it) but you focus on what they do right as well. Which is something I like to see reviewers do. I'd like to see more of your reviews :)
First of all, i agree with everything you said, and you're freaking hilarious!!
i was upset about the story mode too, but there is a way you can play it with other characters! after you complete it, you should be able to change the selected character once clicking on that stage, i think you push square or triangle or something... it isnt obvious, but it is do-able :)

I just can't comment enough on how I agree with you. The music part? In the previous DWs the songs in encyclopedia sent CHILLS down my spine and tears to my eyes but OMG it's TOTAL silence in DW7! And if you want to get skills & attack you can get it in that playing mode where you build up the city and buying the relevant books to raise the stats. But I only have Xtreme Legends though. Don't know about the original.

Where is dw8 review?
thankfully we got a reprieve from koei when they released DW7XL with addtional stuff including playing another character in story mode assuming u beat the story already
I rented the game about a month ago and the first 5 missions in I stopped playing and brought it back. But I guess I never gave story mode a chance. The gameplay feels weird and missing something and yes the progression is very slow. I brought it back cuz I felt like those five missions, I didn't get anywhere. Maybe I should rent it again but it is missing so much that dynasty warriors 5 had, like free mode, morale, a touch of strategy like ordering your troops, and a bow with a crosshair.
I have all of the dynasty warriors :) 4 they tried to put in too much detail i think and ended up making it blurry with a weird combat system

@joetri10 I don't know why this is so hard for you to understand, Conquest Mode is JUST A GLORIFIED VERSION of empires. The comparisons are made to give contrast on what it kind of riffs on, not what totally copies.

Dynasty Warriors 7 Empires just got announced a few weeks ago! It looks awesome!
6 wasn't that bad to me, it was my first DW game so I owe 6 a lot for introducing me to the series. the spinoffs such as Warriors Orochi are great as well, as of lately I've been going through leveling my people and obtaining nightmare unlocks on DW7XL. Planning on checking out DW8 and DW8XL in the coming week so I'm excited. Great review by the way!
6 destroyed all the work 1-5 had 7 revived it all and 8 built upon 7
8 is marvellous, I'll be checking out 8XL for sure. The fact that we finally see the daughter of Lu Bu (Not knowing he even had one) Makes me really want to see how she plays and that one reason alone made me want to check out 8XL. And they brought back the Sky Piercers from DW6 just for her!!
@joetri10 "Party" members and "allies" are the same thing regarding this game :/
Not to mention that you can play them as well after you've unlocked those characters. Empires has a board for you to become ruler, CM just has a board. Unless you're talking about the time limit. Damn, then it IS totally different. CM doesn't have a time limit like Empires does!
It's a glorified version of it, You can make comparisons, but not exact ones. You simply to need to understand that.

I prefer then to do story mode the way the did it with 7 because it takes way too long to if you pick a character a beat each character's story one by one. Plus you get a better understanding of the story when you play diffrent characters for each of the 4 kingdoms

You know what? I can relate to that realistic part of things. In short? S.SM4, or DW5 for you guys, was the best shit for me. That was the last time they got really realistic with things. Costume, fighting, all with unique movesets... DW7 characters even named their Musou attacks now. LOL. But DW7 is a whole new experience, & DW6 is like a prototype to that. I like DW6's kill-all-you-can challenge mode though. DW7's kill-as-many-characters-as-you-can challenge mode is also very nice.

This is a great review and I'm glad you ended the review like you did. I guess I've just learned to accept all the glitching and bad mechanics while ignorantly choosing to love the game. It's a great time killer and it does have a ton of replay value.
@joetri10 Except the comparison I'm making is between a game franchise and it's spin offs of that same franchise. 007 Goldeneye vs COD? They're two different franchises.

Enjoyable review, very true!! I LOVE this series, despite having a LOT of complaints for most installment. What sends chill down my spine is its music (especially DW4). Liking music is subjective, but subjectivity doesn't play a role in being able to appreciate the intricacy of compositions. I have been playing various instruments for the past 20 years, and trust me, the fusion is top-notch :) And 07:23 lol! it always bugs me to no end!!!! goodness' sake, fix that Omega Force!!!
