Today we tear down a highly request Nissan VQ35 from a 2017 Infiniti Q50 Hybrid. The VQ came around in the early 2000's and has been a staple in the Nissan and Infiniti lineup since. This version is a direct injected VQ35HR which in the Q50 is found in the Hybrid models from 2014-2017.
This particular core is blown up BAD, but how did it get so bad? How did the driver not shut it off at the early warning signs? Well the answer may surprise you. We tear this engine all the way down to figure out exactly what went wrong and how it got so bad.
Why am I doing this? My name is Eric and I own and run a full service auto salvage business called Importapart. Part of our model includes buying blown up engines and dismantling to salvage the good parts to resell. We do not rebuild or repair engines, we simply supply parts to people who do! I've left links at the top to reach us about parts.
I really hope you enjoyed this teardown, as always I love all of the comments, feedback and even the criticism. Catch you on the next one!

Natural selection, the automotive chapter.

You haven’t met my wife or her friends. They now drive electric cars for this very reason
@@theairstig9164lmao good thing those need regular maintenance too…
@@etonmows7901i mean, you dont need to change oil, you dont need to think about chains, belts etc. no car with an ice engine i know resisted more than 80k km without an oil change, but i know electric cars that went over that mileage without anything but tires 😅
@@birtalanlorant5572 I definitely agree there is less to do but your still supposed to change the cabin air filter, the window wipers, and refill the washer fluid once a year. And you have to flush the brake fluid every 3 years and change the coolant every 100k. Any car should be inspected once a year to check the suspension and look for any unexpected damage. Oh and let’s not forget to check the tire pressure at least once a season.
@@etonmows7901 TBF I dont check the tire pressure, as when its low or high my car tells me. I refill the windscreen washer fluid like once every 6-7 weeks as it only holds a gallon or so worth of liquid, so thats never an issue. I never heard you have to replace wipers, I only replace them when they start to get squiky or they dont clean my windows how I want them, they usually last 3-4-5 years. Unexpected damage never happens, but if I hit a pothole at speed I do pull over and check the car. An electric car would be welcome in my life as it would get rid of the hassle of having to get an oil change every 7k km (4k miles) and not having to replace brake pads like ever :))
To Infiniti and beyond! For the connecting rod.
What this engine did wasn’t flying. It was exploding with style.
Maybe this is a new way to get things into orbit.
Nearly fell off my chair at "Supersonic Trumpet"
I hate to say it, but I still don't get it.

A hybrid that pumps out more horsepower and torque than my 360... I mean yeah. It's an 80s smog goblin, but still...
Lmao, you sound sad and possibly hurt by that engine family. Stick to the 420, and I'm sure people will keep their ears open to those claps of yours, even if they aren't coming from your hands when you walk.
I big belly laughed at this
1 less wet shart sounding engine on the roads 🥳
I don't disagree. This was easily the most blown up engine of the year, so far.
That second head bolt sounded like me after wings and beer the night before
- Where is the wrist pin?
- Probably in another engine.
This cracked me up. 🤣🤣🤣
Not only do I love the tear downs with the varying degrees of carnage, but I also enjoy seeing tears downs just to see the myriad of different engineering that have been created to make an engine. The multitude of different configurations is just fascinating. I also love this guy's sense of humor. I am guaranteed a belly laugh at least once every video.
When you dropped the pan I said "smorgasbord!!!"
'It's a blood bath in here'. Brilliant description of the carnage in there. Loved this video Eric.
The VQ35HR is one of the most robust and best engines from Nissan. It has 360HP and 420lb-ft of torque stock. Mine with upgrades and the Nismo exhaust system I am making 383HP and 430lb-fort of torque. The engine itself has 311HP and 268lb-ft of torque and the hybrid electric motor has 68hp and 214lb-for of torque.
The VQ35HR which was originally released in the 2008-2008 Infiniti G35 and Nissan 350Z 2007-2008 was the testing grounds and later the foundation for the VR38DETT in the Nissan GTR. This engine the VQ35HR was also noted and made into a 3.8 liter by Nissan Nismo thus being called the VQ38HR and made 400HP and 311lb-ft of torque Naturally Aspirated.
I'm sure the engine itself is very good, but the best engine ever made still needs to be maintained.

This engine was driven a fair bit after the intitial bang and the driver was either deaf or happy to keep going until it would go no more. Thanks Eric
This VQ35HR teardown is WILD! From the destroyed pistons and crank to the carnage in the oil pan, this engine is definitely toast. Great job explaining everything in detail, especially the bearing material everywhere! Those poor rod caps never stood a chance. What oil was this running on? And is that REALLY how much metal was in the filter? Crazy! Can't wait to see the new engine go in!
good work out for Blue this week, where are the Blue pry bar fans !

“Pick up the phone”. Made me laugh.
One ringy-dingy… Two ringy-dingies… Hello, have I reached the party to whom I am speaking? Nissan Motors?
That engine was accidentally released. It's a futuristic variable-displacement and variable-compression ratio "impingement engine". It operates on the principle of having the engine parts actually striking one another. The mechanical energy from the parts being struck is converted by piezoelectrical crystals to electrical energy, which is used to recharge the battery and power the electric motor. It is truly a scientific marvel, capable of self-destruction on a truly molecular level. This situations called "Piezoelectric Runaway".
And it's got a self destruction system built in when O2 sensor sees too much of the bad stuff going out of your pipes.
best head bolts removal in a long time...music to my ears.
I owned this same setup. The 3.5 was 305 hp, the battery back up, rated 360, but had more power than that. It walked my then FX50s, and Mustangs etc. I put this set up as one of my best setups, as it was consistent with performance, and 21 mpg. I can’t say it enough, you beat these things, do frequent oil changes. Great tear down!
The only way we are going top this is if you get a motor where the block itself is broken in half.
As for oil changes, every 3000 miles is cheap insurance regardless of how long the manufacturer says you can run.
I mean, he did have one with a broken crankshaft not long ago...
He's ad one with multiple destroyed wristpins before.
Malice in the combustion palace? Oh, it’s fine!
Great video.
I'm an old school guy with the 60's and 70s Engines .
I could work on them.
I still work on them! 👍
I can't blame you. All the new Engines have so many parts and electronics, you have to be a total wiz to do anything to them.
@@SpiKSpaN-ei6zq When I do work or look at them WIZZ Does come to mind, but not in the arena of knowledge ! LOL 😂 I usually want to take a good one on them! 🤣👍
"You can't power through rod knock".... nope, you can't.
But I did drive a Ford 3.8 V6 20 miles with a missing #5 rod bearing, by keeping the revs just high enough to get some oil pressure. It made it. Largest piece of that bearing left was a dime-sized piece of blue 'foil' (shell, not bearing material) stuck to the journal.
I drove home miles after I beat the bearings out of a VQ under boost with hella knock LOL
That engine went "To Infinity and Beyond"👨🚀
Hi Eric from the UK, I love watching all your teardowns, but this one surpassed them all, the humour, your presentation, it's all brilliant, please don't change anything, life just wouldn't be the same...!!!
For those counting, a metric stone of 10mm is 22
And a gaggle of 10mm is 26
Almost 50 bolts just for timing covers
But the meaning of life, the universe and everything is 42. 🤔
lol...you know its going to be a good video when you can see right through the engine block.
23:50 That connecting rod is what happens when you let Salvador Dalí design your engine.
Nice variety of jiggly bits in the pan
The inspection ports that have been installed
Definitely the worse engine disaster I've seen. Always a great video! Thanks for posting.
And I was so hoping this was out of a Altima…….
That's the best scientific test EVER!
Spooky creaking door head bolts! Gotta love it.
That bottom end exploded so big and fast that it didn't have time to destroy the top end (Spoke too soon.). Amazing. Oh, and I was at a St. Patty's day dinner with family and my Irish-twin brother mentioned a name that my mom called us once or twice when we were kids. She claims she has no idea of the word, or ever using it before. Then here, a week later, you say, "What kind of Jebroni would put a 13 on a Nissan...". Too damn funny. I sent my brother the clip and the link. Cheers.
The Rock used "Jabroni" in his promos a lot
“That’s sound bad, let’s keep going” 😂😂😂😂
Even I, an avid viewer of carnage, succumbed to oil related failure, granted it was a Theta, pre 2, it consumed oil, no smoke, no leaks, a quart every 1k miles, it upped that suddenly and uncle Rodney started knocking, it was well maintained and not abused, 127k rip 😢
After working on my dad's 2007 Nissan Frontier with the VQ40, I'm not too fond of these engines. Too much crap hanging on them. Coolant runs through the throttle body! WTF? I did the brakes, those were EASY, but to do the spark plugs and change a leaky valve cover? Gotta unhook like 20 vacuum lines, 2 coolant lines, partridge and a pear tree. All to take the intake manifold off to get to the plugs! Only reinforces my disliking of Nissans. Not to mention the annoying an unnecessary brackets that exist just to be in the way.
Hope you did the PCV valve while you were in there!
“Testing” that piston and have the rod lazily fall out was hilarious! But the thing that caught me off was the “swollen” hulk hand.😂😂😂😂😂
"WHERES MY PRIZE, I HEARD IT" That hit me in my kid age feels and memories hard.
That was some epic carnage!! Wow!
Because of your channel Eric I check my oil at least once a week. Always one that changed my oil and filter every 5000km regardless of car, with synthetic, quality oils and filters.
This thing would have sounded rather loud as it was self destructing for sure!
Headbolts were an A+.
That engine was absolutely rocked. I'm guessing the person that owned this hybrid figured, "it's mostly electric. It doesn't need maintenance"...or it got joy-ridden to destruction.
One too many pulls at the stoplights
This is what I come here for, and I certainly wasn't disappointed. I can't even imagine how loud that was when it came apart, and it was definitely a high rpm event. Notice that even the best cylinders had zero crosshatch left in the bores. Absolutely smoked
Those head bolts are very musical
The HR is awesome! The regular 3.5 is legendary. Won so many awards. Both offer such a fun ride and plenty of power.
But the 3.0 twin turbo was even better in my opinion. As someone that owned Nissans for 8 years and one Infiniti for 3 years I got to experience all three and loved those engines.
Only thing that pissed me off a bit is the 3.0 twin only accept premium gas. When the prices were near 4 bucks a gallon. I hated driving my Infiniti.
Always loved these engines! Very nicely engineered by Nissan.
A very well planned and executed engine autopsy, Eric. Carnage does do justice to the shrapnel left behind. Hope your hand is better 😂
BRILLIANT video, thanks for showing the VALVES it’s much more interesting seeing the engine complete: I am especially interested in seeing the carbon deposits on the direct injection / valves. Thanks for showing all this

I think that the "where's my prize? I head it." Was the hardest you ever got me laughing, which is a pretty tall order giving your previous performance.
Hahaha your laugh when you pull the upper pan off is gold
I've had my 79 k20 at 140mph before I tore it all the way apart, It was built for mud drag racing, but never finished, I lowered it close to stock, and threw in a built th400 that cost me an arm and leg, 572 big block with a supercharger, it was estimated to have 700+hp, crate engine, it was on 40s with a 6 inch lift lol. Engine alone was worth more than what I paid for the entire truck, but decided to tear the entire thing down, and restore it right rather than a toy to beat up.
Here watching while the F1 in Melbourne is on in the background!! Life’s good!!
Thanks for still keeping it hilarious! That performance was even more than 100%!
What’s that, VQ noises? Bangin’ on those journals like a Q fiftee-ee!
That ain't workin', that's the way ya screw it, runnin' on nuthin', BAM! the wristpin's free-ee!🤯
"That sounds bad, lets keep going!" Ive said that a few too many times!
I didn't connect the missive damage to the electric helper until you pointed it out. Nice work as usual! This one wasn't all 'destruction by combustion'!
Well, if there's something I've learned through your videos, it's not to keep oil fresh and at right level (that I already knew), but the reason why engines that suffered serious damages at rod bearings are better to be replaced than "fixed", even if the cranksdhaft and rods still look fine. You'll never get rid of all those metal particles around the little oil passages...
My stock car blew up one year, that 355 had 2 cylinders in each bank go at same time, 7000rpm holding gas into a straightaway, boom 4 rods through the block others bent to hell and destroyed internals and pan. . Thank god by double hump heads survived.
13:50 You can see that the oil gallery gasket sticks out which mean low oil pressure. That's a known failure point in these engines.
I gave up on oil change intervals with my '03 Sonoma (2.2L). Started out doing 3K-5K, but I realized I was changing oil that was still clear and a little darker than honey.
As time went on I switched to just doing every 3 months. Then, 4 months. Now, I've been doing oil changes every 6 months, which seems like a LOT but I can still see through the oil about half the time at the end (sometimes so well it's hard to read the dipstick).
I'm aware I have a unicorn, though. LN2 engine has 340,000 miles on it now with no discernible internal noises at all (ed: piston slap when extremely cold... but it did that brand spanking new), good oil pressure, and a little seepage from the main seals. All other gaskets are factory installed... yes, it's never been opened. How? Probably because I drive it every day whether I need to or not, and I do so long enough to get the oil hot... burning any moisture or volatiles out before they can react. That's an informed guess, and I suppose it's good enough because results.
The missing wrist pin went feral and ran off.
Nice to see it had the new quick release bearing
You gotta love DISCONNECTING rods..

My grandpa had a protoge5 , he drove like a madman in that thing everywhere, so driving with him was fun, feeling the long back end swing around tight corners he'd take fast was something else, he definitely surprised me the first time I drove with him when he got that car that replaced an older Pontiac van that he drove more conservative in.
He had it up to like 260k miles before the tranny started slipping and he traded it. Good memories though.
