The first guitar solo ( 8:52 ) is "the midnight train." Neil is painting us a picture of a train with the guitar. The harmonic is the locomotive engine releasing steam. The four repeating notes is the "clickity-clack" of the train, which gets faster, and ends with the horn, "Whoooooo..."

Agree. And that is why I am surprised that Rick Beato did not speak overtly about Steve Perry's singing and vocal clarity. Those two things were a big part of this band's success and I think this is the only Journey song that is covered in Beato's series. He demonstrates his appreciation for the singing and vocal sound throughout, but he never actually mentions Steve Perry's name.

@@Markothunder I saw Journey live in concert back sometime in 2020, I was one of those people who was doubting whether or not they would *really* sound like Journey since Steve Perry left, but I got to say that Arnel Pineda is genuinely incredible with how similar he sounds and sings compared to Steve Perry. He often gets overlooked when talking about "rock" singers because many feel his style is not rock. One of the all time greatest voices and talented singers? Yes, but the guys in Journey referred to him as a "crooner" and details like that often are why people don't make certain top ___ lists. Journey is/was a rock "band" but the question remains if that means Perry is a "rock singer". Personally, I agree and feel he is in part a rock singer but more than that. A more typical rock singer might be characterized as a Paul Rogers, Brian Johnson, Roger Daltry, etc., but I agree singers like Perry can also be classified as "rock" as well.

True story. I first stumbled across Rick’s WMTSG series back around Episode 17, Boston. So, March of 2018. I immediately told my brother about these, and we quickly consumed the previous episodes and eagerly consumed each new episode as they came out. Somewhere along the way, I casually remarked to my brother, “You know, if Rick ever does an episode on ‘Don’t stop believing,’ I’ll die a happy man.”
Fast forward to June 2019, and I’m scheduled to have heart surgery. It’s a routine, low-risk procedure, but, you know, HEART SURGERY. The Sunday before the procedure, I wake up to find that Rick has posted Episode 69, the band is Journey, and the song is . . . Don’t Stop Believin’.
So thanks, Rick, for simultaneously focusing on the song above all others I wanted to see AND making me fear I was about to die. Spoiler Alert, the surgery was a success, and it’s all good. Don’t Stop Believin’ . . .

Rick I saw the tour, I remember they had a green lazer light for the wheel in the sky song. First time I'd seen a laser show. It was in a square pattern, and they made sure they touched everyone in the Arena. They had the show perfectly geared up... Thank you Journey all these years later...

If there’s any song by Journey that I would love to see picked apart, I would go for Mother, Father. Oh my dear sweet holy God, Neal Schon goes from a slow blues outro on Who’s Crying Now which was simple and sublime to this two solo song where he’s an absolute face melter. The first solo was enough for me to sit slack jawed then he shreds the second solo and goes to some other place. The angelic outro vocals by Steve Perry are just ridiculous. Seeing Mother Father in concert 5 rows back from the stage in front of Neal Schon was amazing, seeing it with my son next to me and getting a picture with Neal, I can die happy lol

Rick, didja ever notice how Steve Perry ALWAYS finishes his words in his songs? Doesn't drop endings, or the "-ing"s, or whatever. He always cleanly enunciates all the words he sings. Amazing. Most singers would just slop their way through, "adding feeling," but Steve didn't need to do that to bring the tingling. How cool.

Great video and breakdown of a Song that continues to grow even 40 years after it was written. Neal Schon is my guitar hero. I was 11 years old in 1979 hearing the song Lights on my brothers radio. Neal’s solo inspired me to wanna play. I had no idea who was playing guitar or Journey was. I begged my parents for an electric guitar. And 41 one years later Neal is still the biggest influence in my playing. And Journey is my favorite band.

I listened to an interview Steve Perry did years ago on CBC, talking about this song. He mentioned how it was never a #1 hit on the radio, but became their most popular song live by a HUGE margin, and of course, always gets the crowd singing along.
    From that interview:
"He only found out later there is no such place as the "south Detroit" he sings about -that south of the U.S. city is the Ontario city of Windsor.
"I tried north Detroit, I tried east and west and it didn't sing, but south Detroit sounded so beautiful. I loved the way it sounded, only to find out later it's actually Canada," Perry said."

I saw Journey when they toured promoting this album, and that song had a "new" sound to it. I was into progressive rock (being a huge Steve Morse fan) and it showed why Journey was ahead of their time, and was a group comprised of excellent musicians. The friends I hung around with back then were musicians who had the same taste in music as I did, and Journey was on a short list of "popular" groups we listened to, and went to their concerts. I always find it amusing when some people don't understand just how good they were just because they got a lot of air time. One of the top lineups of all time who simply put out great music. Thanks for the video!

Rick Beato is truly a master musician. I just watched him breakdown one of Journeys hits by isolating 20 or 30 second sound bites and explains what's going on with each instrument. He highlights the added flair or nuance adopted by the original artists which gives you a sence of appreciation that you perhaps don't have coming in. Keep doing what your doing Rick, it works..
